IMO, the best female vocalist currently in terms of dark/light vocals is Tatiana Shmayluk from Jinjer. There is a live session of their song Pisces on YT, which is simply mindblowing. As for learning the proper technique for harsh vocals, why not just interview some of the vocalists? The Charismatic Voice has interviewed quite a few metal vocalists, and those have always been fascinating watches.

I'll add to everyone else's requests for Courtney's one take of Circle With Me. Also, one thing worth noting about Courtney's vocals is that she is far more able than most people to allow some level of true vocal fold phonation into her harsh vocals, which is *very* tricky to do in a safe way. It lets her play with sound in between and/or combining harsh vocals with pitch in a way that most people can't.

Actually, it's not that hard to combine some true vocals into harsh vocals as long as you stay in your natural tone. And that means true and harsh vocals both when used together. Then it's quite fluent and allows some light pitch shifts. Same as speaking normally. It's way harder (and more dangerous) to combine more technical vocals. You can combine a high scream with a falsetto and a growl with a subharmonic or even a bass structure. But a growl with a falsetto? That's extremely hard if it's even possible. Just some minor insights in that topic.

I love Spiritbox, the whole band is just great. Another band which you'd love is Jinjer. I see people have said to listen to Pisces and Perennial, I'd probably say Perennial. While Pisces is great for a shock for the first time someone sees a woman scream you've already seen it. Perennial from Wacken is amazing because it's their last song and before the song she's a little out of breath then she sings the song and crushes it and after she talks and she sounds like she just ran a race. That shows breath control. She could still be exhausted but still sing a song as demanding as Perennial and sing it perfectly.

My favorite screamer style vocalist is actually a youtuber and harsh vocals coach named Justin Bonitz. He has amazing range and mastery of pretty much all screaming styles and techniques. He is also extremely vocally athletic, like mind blowingly so. His band Tallah is doing really well right now and he does one take vocal videos for all their songs. They write very theatrical concept albums that normally tell a story of someone falling deep into madness because of their circumstances and decisions. Justin embodies these characters through his wide arsenal of screaming styles. He also says he takes inspiration from Disney villains. Check out his one take of "Red Light" by Tallah to see the final mental break from the first album. But any of them are good for a reaction. btw He's done vocal teaching collab videos with other coaches too. Might be a fun video or two. His person channel is called Hungry Lights I think.

I love Courtney's screaming because it sounds so organic, like she's really angry. I like that there's some pitch in there; maybe some true folds participation? Her clean voice is so gentle and inviting, which makes a wonderful contrast. Her body language while she sings is also interesting. The band is super-tight and accomplished, too. The biggest thing I wanted to impress is that YES, almost all tonality comes down to mouth shape when you're screaming. Screaming / growls are weird. You ask people that do it and most of the time they are self taught. Singers like Tatiana from Jinjer just walk out in the middle of nowhere and start practicing where they wont be heard. Then you see what they can do and their like "i don't have issues with my throat / vocal cords from screaming so much".

In that song you will see here transition back in forth between styles in the same phrase, sometimes even transitioning back and forth in the same word. That said, finding full-bore classic singing along with significant variations in screaming is tough to find in one vocalist; most have more depth in one than another (naturally), with more complexity in one than another. Also haven't seen many reactions to this. I've only seen 1 vocal breakdown (Beth Roars). Bjorn is known for lots of harsh and clean singing techniques with Soilwork, but this ticked more techniques and octaves (I believe its nearly 3) than any other song I know of him. If anyone ever finds an HQ live version of him singing this, I need it. Right now. Kim Dracula - Seventy Thorns ft Jonathan Davis kzbin.info/www/bejne/l37GoXluqrGjepY Kardovox has done this one: at least 2 harsh techniques and more clean techniques than I can count... baritone scat, fry speak, 80s-rock level belt, and then some. 3 octaves here as well I think. Davis does clean only, but it sounds like he overlaid harmony on himself at an octave. Igorrr - Cheval kzbin.info/www/bejne/rISaiWikqtudftE ieuD has been done by Kardovox, and while it has more techniques from the two vocalists, the guest instruments in this put it over the top. The pieces, especially harsh, are clear tonal steps and an excellent place to get in to screaming with tonality. Fair warning, Igorrr is my example of where genius meets madness, and this will not be like other songs.

Okay so watching this I thought I'd comment, even tho I'm pretty nervous to haha. So Courtney and I have similar screaming technique, hers is a lot more controlled since for 20 so years I've been doing this I've never been able to afford singing lessons, however, apologies for that tangent. But what I do is longate my mouth and face to make it darker which helps me do whatever inside. But the difference between what you did the "Oah" that is the access of the false cords where I believe just like myself Courtney is using a try technique. The reason I do that is because unlike using false cords, I hurt myself more accessing that rather than just darkening my scream using a vocal fry technique, I can also do this to deepen my scream like Courtney did toward the end of the song.

I love how hilarious y'all are, those bloopers in the end 😂 Anyway, Spiritbox's singer is a good example for false chord screams, if you wanna check out a woman doing high fry screams insanely well (as well as decent false chords/gutterals) alongside clean vocals - so the vocalist not only transitions smoothly from clean to harsh vocals, but also does quick transitions between the two most common harsh vocal techniques, between high and low, i recommend Vintersea with their Slay at Home live one take.

There are two recognised techniques for screams; Using the false chord - muscle flaps that sit above your vocal folds, by rattling them you can make a deeper sound. You can make a similar sound by sighing heavily, or clearing your throat. Then there's fry screams - taking a note, slowing it down to pops and crackles and then amplifying that sound with the diaphagm. The pops and crackles will be 1 octave lower than the note and is much more delicate work imo. This is typically used in tandem with singing to create a fuller sound as the fry sits on top of the original note. For a good example look at Disturbed. Everything after the initial sound is creates is resonance manipulation - in this video you see her do that by lowering her larynx to create more space for resonance, tongue position and mouth shape. You generally dont want to involve your vocal chords when doing false chords, so to get different pitches you start with a 'mid' scream and then change mouth shape tongue position to make it deeper or higher. Wider mouth with tongue down will make a higher sound, tongue to roof of mouth and pursed lips creates a deeper sound. You can test this relatively safely by whispering whilst changing your mouth shape.

There's a famous YT vocal coach (and opera singer) - Elizabeth Zharoff - from "The Charismatic Voice" which did an in lab scientific analysis of what's going on inside a metal singer when they do screaming/gutural singing. Chris Liepe has good screaming tutorials. I'm primarily a bassist, and I don't understand the mechanics of vocals well enough to explain how to scream, but I can say from experience that if you're doing it correctly you won't feel it in your vocal chords, and it's a super relaxed feeling sound to make. If you feel a tickling or rattling feeling in your vocal chords, stop and try something else. Tuesday of last week, I was recording a cover of Pennyroyal Tea, and the "tea" in the second to last chorus didn't break up like it was supposed to, and rather than redo the take, I tried to push it. I finished the song (badly), then couldn't talk Wednesday, and sounded like a bass version of RFK Jr. Thursday through Saturday, and only started sounding human-ish again on Sunday. I'm back to normal now, so I'll be giving it another shot asap, but I did learn my lesson about pushing.

I think the main tip is to distinguish between vocal fry screams and false chord screams, often called growls. I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure Cortney uses vocal fry screams. I highly recommend a video called "The 3 Arch Enemy Vocalists! Vocal Coach Mary Z Reacts and Explains" by channel VoiceHacks. The latter two vocalists are an excellent example of the difference between false cord growls and fry screaming-comparing them is a great way to develop an ear. The first two vocalists are false cords, but the 2nd vocalist and the 3rd (who uses fry) are the best comparison becaus they're both women, just so you get more like-for-like. I think this video would be a really interesting reaction for you. If you find it that video helpful, a follow-up watching a live rendition of a full song done by each of the latter two vocalists might be interesting. And yes, there is a ton of nonsense on the internet about harsh vocal techniques. Generally, the older the information, the more likely it is to be nonsense, just because for so long it was a niche community of people trying to figure out what the hell to do on their own, with no real recognition of the technique amongst vocal specialists. Today, people are getting a bit of a better grasp on it, but it's still something many people never have access to in terms of personal tuition, unlike singing.

A very underrated band with amazing duo vocals (female and male) is Unexpect from Canada and I'm sure they will blow your mind. My suggestion track is Words from their last album.

There are a couple of great female vocalist who do extreme vocals (Alissa White-Gluz/Arch Enemy, Tatiana Shmailyuk/Jinjer, and of course Courtney LaPlante/Spiritbox, to name a few), and they are all unique on their own. I find myself hard-pressed to choose the best among them, but what I really like about Courtney the most is that when she does the extreme vocals she switches between extreme and clean vocals at times from word to word. If you listen carefully to the extreme part you probably notice what I am referring to.

Really like to hear the analysis of Courtney's subtle breath techniques which do kind of resemble Sinead O'Connor, Delores Riordan or Sharon den Adel. So many focus only on her screams but her genius is the range of styles and the very unique power she has to transition fast.

Tutorials!!! Chris Liepe has a lot of videos about healthy distortion. Also he does collabs with Will Ramos and Elizabeth Zaroff (Charismatic Voice) where they go deeper into the low growls that Will does. With Will's warm up routine that you can access for free that includes kargyraa throat signing (for control of the false chords I presume? It works it's awesome!). The channel Extreme Vocal Institute is one of the best for learning about screaming. Fry screams and false chord are the most popular techniques. Andy Cizek also has a couple good videos on those techniques

Best proper and kind metal scream tutorials you will probably pick up from the videos of Mark from Kardavox Academy. Best video including all the fails and pitfalls and very entertaining would be Justin Bonitz's (vocalist from Tallah and Hungry Lights) How To Scream series in which he debunks his first tutorial kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKDagouVj9SDgNU And lastly watching Will Ramos from Lorna Shore appear on the Charismatic Voice where they shove a camera down his throat while he does all the lovely gnarly goblin noises. Very interesting video. Not sure how good it is to actually learn things because it seems like Will got a bit of an anomaly (SPOILER: his throat is twisting instead of contracting for the false chord screams)! Have fun :)

Courtney has quite a tricky scream technique to get down right. From what I can tell trying to replicate it, it feels/seems like she's mixing the real singed tone with the scream (using mostly false chords I think :D). It's really difficult to balance the singed note with the power of the scream pushing into it, it really easily slips out of control. Cool stuff 😎

She's doing that thing a lot of "core" bands do, which is starting the scream off with a clean yell using actual vocal chords and then adding the false chords. It makes for a lot more clarity in the formation of words and tends to sound really intense and emotional.
