Portugal defeated Czech Republic 2-1, after conceding one goal, Portugal made a comeback, as their youngster Conciecao scored a last minute winner. Ronaldo was involved in the game, but Potugal needs to improve. On the other hand we saw a brilliant competition between Georgia and Turkey. Arda Guler helps Turkey win the game 3-1 but Georgia gave their level best and at least deserved a point from the game.

As an ac Milan fan, i like to say that u are right, Roberto Martinez needs to see leao matches in serie a and see how theo hernandez aids rafa. He needs to understand how leao plays and what will allow him to shine. For me he is the next big thing after CR7. For all those people saying leao is useless first of all he is crucial to Portugal's attack and he is the only one that can break the opposition defense, but i admit his crosses has to be better. Using a back 5 against Czechia doesn't make sense. It restricts players like Leao and Bruno's freedom and he's starting Cancelo and Bernardo, who are good only in specific system. I wouldnt prefer them. A back 4 with Semedo at RB, Palhinha in midfield, and Neto on the right wing would have made the scoreline more comfortable. This won't work against Turkey, who have more talented forwards than Czechia. One positive is Cristiano is in better shape than during the World Cup, performing well in Europe. It's encouraging to see him at his peak. What's needed now is more from the team collectively, rather than relying solely on individuals.

Context regarding Portugal: Cancelo and Bernardo Silva - They are much better when they play in closed proximity and players doing short and close passes. Especially Bernardo Silva running in between half spaces. Cancelo plays better when he maintains with the width occassionally coming inside. Bruno Fernandes: Has to take risk because he is only the guy who can create big scoring opportunities. Need a player who can do that. Rafael Leao: Another risky player who can either run past defenders or lose the ball and concede counter. Vitiniha: One of the important midfielders for Portugal and he needs to be involved more in offensive play. Cristiano Ronaldo: Didn't had impactful match at all. Mostly seen on right half space and left half space during attacking transitions and was missing centrally on the pitch. His link up play is often overlooked (those flicks and passes in final 3rd). Looked a bit under confident. One issue regarding him is his offside run. Most offsides in Euro qualifers by him (15). Something he needs to check on because his age doesn't let him be fast. Portugal should start Palhina because any other team who are good in counters will run through Portugal midfield. Roberto Martinez should start in back 4. With this conservative approach he won't go past Round of 16.

Portugal will obviously play a bit slow keeping in mind that there are 7 matches to play in order to win a trophy. Basically the group stage matches are the preparation stage for the Knock Outs. Almost all the Champions have done this before. Unless the opponent plays too bad, the scoreline might look flattering. E.g Germany beat Portugal 4-0. Italy beat Turkiye 3-0. Turks were absolutely pathetic in Euro 2020. Even France had some difficulties in group stage of WC 2018. Argentina lost to Saudi in WC 22. Group stage matches are crucial of course ; then it's how you grow into the tournament that matters. The first three matches can be evaluated whether the team is ready to face adversities or not. Because often when we are too proactive, we might neglect the small details of the game. There are a lot of teams who play eye catching football then get Knocked out of tournament all of a sudden because they werent prepared to face and respond to adversities. Portugal looked calm even when they were a goal down. In the past, they used to panic, lose their composure and end up getting beaten. Three substitutes involved in the winning goal and that's a great squad utilisation by the manager. These things are important where scoring becomes tougher as the tournament progresses and Portugal are well prepared for this.
