I remember this match. Capello/Press stated that winner would be favorite for Ballondor. Ronaldo tried to do everything on his own to outshine Messi. United came all guns blazing during first 10 minutes but after Eto goal things settled and Barcelona never allowed United to comeback. Vidic and Ferdinand usually reliable had an average night. In hindsight, Tevez and Scholes should have started over Ji Sung Park and Anderson. Rooney had no service from midfield at left wing.

Couldn't agree more. If Sir Alex had just stuck to his usual tactics of 2008 in the 2009 final - United would have won that match 7 out of 10 times. Instead, he went with Park and Anderson who were not so good on the ball whereas players like Nani and Tevez were great carriers of the ball and very press resistant. Scholes with Carrick in the middle would allow United to control the game a bit more when United won the ball back. Tevez and Rooney up front would have been ideal instead of sticking Rooney out wide like he did. And finally Ronaldo and Nani on the wings. United could have sat back and hit them on the counter and also controlled the game with Scholes (also because the Barcelona players respected him so much and you could see this in the 10-15 minutes that Scholes came on as a sub in both finals how United improved).

To everyone who thinks he was too selfish, he literally scored 2 goals from 40 metres that season. All his attempt at goal was valid. Specially since those were made within the starting 20 mins. Its a shame that Eto got a lucky break. This match wouldve been much better even for a neutral if Manchester scored first. Specially if Park wouldve gotten to the ball before Pique after the Ronaldo freekick , then we couldve seen a different game. I would not say Manchester United wouldve won if Eto hadnt scored a lucky goal. But either side couldve won this. If you replayed that match using AI in future I would think win percent after 1000 simulation would be almost 50-50% win for either side. The final Barca really really truely dominated was 2011 not 2009.
