Defensively he’s been awful during most of his career, with silly mistakes and dribbled countless times especially by Messi. The best defender i’ve seen is Varane from 2013-2014 season and VVD from 2019. However in Varane’s case injuries and too much success destroyed his motivation and consistency, had he played the same way that he did back then, could have been the goat

I dislike Alves as a player and Barcelona as a team but Alves in terms of quality was miles above Marcelo. Marcelo only managed to play because he was very good at crossing and dribbling but defensive-wise he was and is a disaster. Most of the humiliation and defeats Real has got have been from Marcelo's awful positioning, especially the 2-3 El Clasico in 2017 was Marcelo's fault that Barca scored at the last minute and the 2011 semi final which Barca won 0-2.
