Cristina Calderon: EVERY DIVER SHOULD BE A MEMBER

"About eight years ago, a friend of mine at an art therapy group invited me to scuba for therapy. And the disabled veteran scuba project funded the whole project, and I was certified through them. Upon that, a dive warriors program picked me up, and they paid for my advanced diving, and they awarded me a free trip to Cozumel.
I was able to go do a warm water dive. With my disabilities from the military and healing through that, I really slowed down in life, and scuba helped me pick up the slack and feel back like a normal person and regain the confidence that the PTSD took for me. I love the DAN membership because it provides so many different outlets of information and assistance. When I finished my first scuba diving, one of the instructors, Sydney Road invited, everybody to pick it up because it's a very affordable and safe way to dive, just having that membership and the insurance.
I do check the DAN website regularly to be informed and know of different safety protocols that are coming up. And a lot of the equipment and things that are out there for the scuba community, are just in the advertisements alone. So I like going to the website and learning about everything there is about diving. I also love the magazine that I read every month. It's just like the highlight of my mail. I forget to check my mail until "Oh, I have my magazine coming. I gotta check that." I love being able to just pick up the magazine wherever I'm at and just be able to escape and return to that love, that joy, that peace that I find being in the diving community.
