The previous Rhodey actor (Terrace Howard) wanted more money to comeback, because he assumed him returning to become “war machine” was a big “selling point” of the movie. Marvel didn’t like being their movie being “held hostage” so they told him fk off, and offered Don Cheadle the same amount of money that Howard rejected, Cheadle took it. And as a bonus Cheadle also LOOKS like the character in the comics. So everything worked out.

Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow, is a normal human with no super powers. She is however highly intelligent and a gifted athlete and martial artist with a lifetime of intensive training.

Comic Nat has the Russian version of the super soldier serum that Captain America got. It doesn’t work as well, a LOT of other Widows that were given it died, but it helped Nat get the code name Black Widow, which is the best of the best among the other Red Room Widows. So she is more durable and her aging is slowed way down. It also helped her retain/regain her memories after she was wiped. The same as it helped Soldat.

Every time you see Iron Man, Tony has made some upgrade to his suit in response to the previous movie, in response to whatever challenged him the last time out. It's great. Like how he fixed the icing problem in 1, but then at the beginning of 2 you see he upgraded with the suitcase so it's portable, then in this one Whiplash's electric current shorted shit out, so next time out you'll see he addressed that problem... it's pretty great, great attention to detail by the writers.

This movie is always great because it really tries to spell out what is going on but everyone misses it (including me the first time). It opens with Tony telling us that it isn't about him, it's about legacy. In the moment that just seems like the Stark Expo, but the reality is it is the theme of the movie and why Tony is acting the way he is. He doesn't want anyone else to know, but he does. He gives his company to Pepper for that part of his legacy. He sets up the situation where Rhodey will feel forced to take the other suit (and makes sure it has a power source installed since Rhodey doesn't have a chest piece, and that the computer settings are such that he is allowed to do so). He basically is just doing what he can to set up his legacy but doing it in such a way that no one will know he is dying.

Hey @seanmahoney2671, I think you're spot on! I totally get what you mean about the legacy theme. It's like Tony is playing 4D chess, setting things up for Pepper and Rhodey while keeping everyone in the dark about his own condition. It adds so much more depth to his character and the movie as a whole. Thanks for this insightful comment; it's got me thinking even more about the film!

Great reaction and analysis, Cristy. I really enjoyed Sam Rockwell's performance as Justin Hammer - his efforts to "be" Tony and falling flat every single time - just brilliant. The suitcase into armour scene and Black Widow taking down ten or so thugs were my favourite moments, along with Hammer's "dance" and the "ex-wife."
@ValerianBajak
@ValerianBajak 10 ай бұрын
The case actually being the armor is a callout to the Iron Man comics of the late 60's-70's, where Tony kept a collapsed version of his suit in a briefcase. All but the chestplate though, that was sustaining his life.

@@CristyReacts 1 - the comparison is apt in that she's also as good of a fighter, and as competent, as the writers need her to be at any given point 2 - She's a spy whereas Batman is a detective, so there's definitely an interesting distinction there. (Honestly, I don't think any of the Batman movies or even tv shows have really delved into him being a detective as much as I'd like. But not the point...) You'll see her show off her specific skills - specific, as opposed to general skills: fighting - as the MCU goes along 3 - I think it's fair to assume that ALL humans in the MCU are a bit tougher, a bit stronger, than the typical human in our world. Like, in the real world we might be thrown against a wall and not break a bone, or hit with a car and not break a bone, but probably we will. In the MCU, it kinda seems more like they can but probably won't. So it's not outlandish strength and durability, but just a slight shifting of probabilities, from "probably injured" to "probably hurt but not injured". As evidenced all throughout the MCU; I'm thinking specifically of when Whiplash got hit by a car. He's not wearing an Iron Man suit, just that flimsy vest that powers his whips, so he *should've* been severely injured, but in the MCU he's merely hurt.

There are some good one shots that tell little stories between the movies. On Disney+ they are under Marvel One Shots. The Consultant fits between Hulk and Iron Man 2, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer Fits between Iron Man 2 and Thor. Others fit in later. They don't move the plot any but they are humorous and may drive side character development.

Great reaction! I love how you've got a solid grasp of Tony's appeal and failings. Great fun to be around of you're but responsible for the consequences. Tony's long story arc is all about consequences. In this one, it's the impact his father had on another family and the inspiration his Iron Man suit has on others - jealousy, noble intentions that get taken advantage of, even dangers to himself. His suit is literally poison at the start. Natasha will have more to answer and it's fun to watch her interact with other characters you will meet. Her mysterious background is part of her charm too. Just know that she's an incredible spy and so she places herself where she can do the most good, always.

It does generally, it depends how you look at it also. Whether you compare the movie to when it was released at the time (which was again only 3 movies lol) or compared to the MCU through phase 1 and Avengers release. It mostly gets a bad rep because of the actor change, the villain for most was kind of lack luster and some say it's kind of all over the place with direction. I am in no way saying, I think this. Just some general consensus thoughts for people.@@CristyReacts

That 'Johnny Depp looking dude' is Mickey Rourke. At one time he was at the top of the A-list with his name featured above Robert De Niro's in a movie they co-starred in. Hey fell off quickly but with the success of 'The Wrestler' and his appearance in this movie it looked like he was making a come-back, but it just never happened. He's still making movies but most of them go straight to streaming/DVD.

Glad to see a video, I was sad to not see it uploaded yesterday, hope you are okay! Love the setup with the light. Also, I really like the cool ending synopsis/review you do. I don't know many details or cool facts on this movie vs upcoming ones, but great attention to detail on some things. Yes, Marvel Studios did start using a lot more CGI around this movie and moving forward. When they made Iron Man, they were a brand-new studio that received a lot of financing and needed to keep budgets down. If I am correct, they built all the suits in the first iron man from scratch and real material and used CGI to help with the fine details. It's why it felt so real and possibly had more "weight" to it. Where again, moving forward they started using fewer practical effects and more CGI. The CGI does get better though but the studio was still in such an infant stage and working out kinks and best practice's (just personal opinion and guessing). Yeah, unfortunately Marvel Studios had another actor - studio dispute and had to replace Terrance Howard. I won't go into the reported drama (you can look that up if you would like) but I like how Don Cheadle took over the role and I think he did well carrying Rhodey's character rest of the MCU. Also, to not spoil anything, Black Widow never really has or gets powers. I don't know if that's true in the comics or all versions, but it's mostly that she is just a really skilled assassin that is very smart and very good in combat. And I am in no way saying that they don't do her justice. Scarlett Johansson does such a great job with the character, and I think the studio does an amazing job portraying the character throughout the MCU. Fans were wanting a black widow film for years; sad it took so long to finally make one way down the line in the MCU. Again, hope you are okay and glad to see an upload, the videos are getter better! p.s. cool easter egg, if you look at the map when he talks to Fury, they tease future heroes that "could" be showing up in MCU. Kind of like teasing Captain Americas shield and how tony uses it as a prop 🤣

Thanks for always adding to the conversation and making this journey even richer, and thanks for sticking with me, even when my schedule gets a bit wonky! P.S. @CristyReacts it's all good, I'm just glad you are okay. Literally all I thought Thursday was like "hope nothing bad happened to her." Not even because I wanted a reaction, but genuinely hoped nothing bad happened to ya. And trust me, I'm not the only fan out there that "knows" this stuff. A lot of it can be looked up but I do like watching documentaries and promotional stuff, so you learn about a lot of it by proxy. I know a lot more way later down the MCU but also here for cool tid bits. And no problem, they throw a lot of Easter eggs into their movies so it's hard to catch everything. And I'm not going anywhere just because you missed an upload, I can't wait for all your future reactions. Stay healthy and keep up the good work.

There's a key set of rules you have to follow when writing a story with a good character-vs-character conflict. First, contrary to the conventional wisdom, the most important character is the _antagonist._ You have to start with _them._ You have to get them _all_ fleshed out before you even _touch_ the protagonist. You have to make them _terrifying_ and seemingly _unstoppable._ _Then_ you make the protagonist with logical ways to _defeat_ them that don't violate any of the rules of the _story;_ rules you have to introduce before you get to the _conflict._ This is a key reason it's such a challenge to make a good _sequel._ If it's a story with a happy ending, then the antagonist in that story was either _defeated_ or _destroyed,_ and so is no longer _available._ So you have to introduce a _new_ antagonist and adapt them to an existing _protagonist,_ which flies _directly_ in the fact of the rules. But movies in the MCU seem to have _mastered_ the art of adapting new antagonists to existing protagonists. They've made movie after movie, and every _one_ of them _rocks._

Intro: The color changing light, I can understand your choice of red for Iron Man, but if you refer back to Iron Man 1, Tony said "throw a little hot rod red in there" to which Jarvis responded [paraphrasing] "Yes, that will be less conspicuous" I personally would lean toward a yellow (gold if you will) for Iron Man, but that's a personal taste thing. Superheroes come in 4 types where there identities are concerned Secret Identity: They have an identity they protect, usually to keep those around them safe, and very to extremely few people know they are one and the same Public Identity: Basically everyone knows who the hero is when they're not being a hero Neither/Neutral: They have a non-public identity, but a lot of people know so it's not hard to find out N/A: They have only their hero identity. This is who they are at all times, they have no other identity. 3:15-3:23 We generally do not speak of The Fantastic Four. Their on screen presentations are substandard. 5:35-5:38 changing the actor who played Rhodey... Most logical 2 reasons. 1. Cuba Gooding Jr. was already engaged on another project and couldn't make the time commitments, or 2. Cuba Gooding Jr. wanted more money and Don Cheadle said "I can do it for less." (If it was money, it could easily be "You want me to take the time away from the people I love, you best make it worth my while.") 12:20-12:23 "He's low key happy." I will just emphasize this moment for noticeably later. 15:07-15:10 "Back on watch? Who's watching him?" Back on watch, would mean "back on duty" as in "keeping watch" "standing guard" or "on patrol" Remember Rhodes is a military man. 20:40-20:41 "What's she doing here?" Natasha works for SHIELD, so firing her would be the perogative of Director Nick Fury. He hasn't fired her. The cover identity of Natalie Rushman, is an assistant at Stark International, which Tony previously made Pepper Potts CEO of and gave up his direct control of the company. Pepper has not seen reason to fire Natalie. This is why she is here. 22:34-22:38 I am not sure you comprehend the significance of "You have just created a new element" in science elements are the building blocks of molecules, every element forms molecules of only that element (hydrogen is 1 hydrogen atom, oxygen naturally exists as 2 atoms of oxygen [Ozone being a kind of odd one is comprised of 3 atoms of oxygen[ Helium, Selenium, Iron, etc. The elements of the periodic table are elements. They are comprised of only one atomic element per molecule. Water, Petroleum, Carbon Dioxide, etc are compounds, they form a molecule comprise of 2 or more elements. Additions that have been added to the periodic table over time, artificially, have been radioactive isotopes, they degrade very rapidly and are not stable. In this context, Tony has created a new, stable element.) 23:30-23:35 Expo "Exposition" they are exposure for upcoming technology releases. Such as "The Consumer Electronics Expo" where you can see the consumer electronics manufacturers expect to release in the next 1-4 years, in the consumer industry it would be where Apple might reveal the next generation iphone and ipad, Tesla might unveil the "next generation electric vehicle which can drive non-stop from New York to Los Angeles. I remember when I was young going with my family to an expo in New Orleans for an expo in the arcade game industry (my parents owned an arcade and it was a good opportunity for us to get access to pre-orders of arcade games, since we bought ours, and didn't rely on a vendor to place them in our arcade and take over half the gross of the machine) If it helps, think of them as "conventions, like comic-con, but the big presenters are showing off products they plan to bring to market soon" But in the Hammer and Stark [current timeline] they are a d*ck measuring contest. 25:40-25:50 You want to have a stressful question.. "In this world, after the last year or two, does collision and comprehensive insurance cover 'superhero/supervillain' destruction of your parked car?" (so many cars totaled. If it's not covered... the bill will bankrupt or kill you.) 28:25-28:30 You finally got your kiss.

18:07 "We got this all the way from _Russia!"_ This strikes me, in retrospect, as a lapse. Ivan Vanko is a _physicist._ He's supposed to be intelligent enough to duplicate the technology that powers the _Iron Man_ suit, but he couldn't muster the foresight, before he left, of designating a _pet_ sitter? 1:41 Regarding your statement here. Superheroes keeping their identities a secret is more of a DC superhero rule than a Marvel superhero rule. From all the MCU movies you've seen so far all the heroes have their real identities known to the public. However, there is one superhero in Marvel who follows keeping the real identity a secret rule and that is Spider-Man. This rule is one of the key differences between the DC and Marvel franchises another difference is that Marvel characters are written in a way where the audiences can relate to them whereas DC characters are written in a way where we look up to them or aspire to be like them.

@@CristyReacts The best comedies of all-time: You watched "The Big Lebowski"; I think I mentioned a few in that comment section: "The Princess Bride", "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", and "Walk Hard" I'd also throw out Edgar Wright's best, "Hot Fuzz" and "Scott Pilgrim vs the World" And one more (it's a lot, I know. Sorry): speaking of Broken Lizard (the comedy troupe who made both Super Troopers movies), "The Slammin' Salmon" I actually think it's their best. "Super Troopers" was an iconic, classic comedy, but they made a dud after that, then an okay movie, so their star fell. So when they made "The Slammin' Salmon" next, I think it flew under the radar. Which is a shame, it should be considered an all-time comedy IMO, at least on par with Super Troopers.

I like it that they go straight into Vanco's grief, & subsequent creation of his "suite" a good opener for a sequel film, this one...grew on me having felt at the Cinema that it seemed to flop in the middle. Mr. Downey Jr, had something to do with the casting of Mickey o Rourke, so Ive heard, they were both has beens making a come back as Hollywood actors, after their addictions I had my doubts about O' Rourke in this, BUT he did okay here, & the accent was convincing to, certainly this sequel is better than ROBOCOP 2 was, which moved at a snail's pace

A TV series I'd like to suggest to react to if you haven't seen it is Buffy the Vampire Slayer. There's a series and a movie, react to the movie to if you'd like to. But the movie came first, which sparked the series. And Buffy's connected series, Angel.

One problem, plot wise, is that Tony could have really just gone back to using a battery (or any other non-Arc reactor electricity source) until he could figure out a better solution. Yes, he might have been restricted to his house for awhile... but no real reason for the blood toxicity sub-plot.

In the comics, Tony is an alcoholic. This movie loosely adapted the devil in a bottle arc. The reason he can't just use another power source is nothing else could power the Iron Man suit. He is addicted to being Iron Man. It isn't just a suit for him. As he said, he IS iron man. That is also why he won't turn the suit over to the government. This movie is all about Tony's self destructive tendencies.

Thanks for the info! I didn't grow up reading comic books so I have a lot to learn. How close did it stick to the "devil in a bottle" arc? I always wonder if comic book movies are strict adaptations of the original stories or more loose

@@CristyReacts the MCU uses the comics for inspiration but does it's own thing. For example, Tony has to quit being Iron Man for a while due to his drinking and Rhodes takes over as Iron Man. Justin Hammer and Whiplash are also featured in the arc. Personally I like that the MCU departs from the comics in some ways. It means I can still be surprised even though I grew up reading the comics.

Him trying to overcome the self-destructive cycle he's fallen into after finding out he's about to die a REALLY horrible death and him trying to settle all of his affairs before the inevitable death. Rhodey gets the old suite, pepper become CEO, and he will preside over one last Stark Expo were inventors and tech geeks can come together, oogle the new technology Stark Industries is producing and share ideas about how that technology can be used and developed.

He wasted so much of his early life and now, just when he was starting to get his shit together, he found out he's going to die a horrible death. He's not having fun, he's angry and in pain, and NOBODY who supposedly cares for him notices. They just think he's being a spoiled rich kid and that's part of him settling his affairs too. He's pushing everyone away hoping that if he acts out and is this monumental asshole then when he dies it won't hurt as much.

And then he found out, that Staine, a man who was pretty much his best-friend/sudo-uncle/surrogate father-figure, a man he probably trusted more than anyone in the world, was not only the man selling the weapons to the terrorists but also the man who locked him out of his own company. Needless to say, not a great night for him, and it was all because one reporter handed him the worst news in the world.

I didn't enjoy the film as much as you did, Cristy. A superhero movie is only as good as the main villain, and Whiplash just wasn't a major threat although I enjoyed Mickey Rourke's take on him. Justin Hammer from the comics is nowhere near the way he was portrayed as a rich dweeb in the movie and to provide comic relief. My favorite part was Black Widow teaming up with Happy at the end of the movie! I really though having her intro to the Marvel film universe saved this film. But I'm glad you enjoyed it, but I think you will find as you see many of the other movies how this one is just a bit weaker than the really good films in the series.🤔

@@CristyReacts I definitely think it's a bummer that Justin Hammer was portrayed as so incompetent. First, that's Sam Rockwell, one of my favorite actors (I'd recommend checking out "Mr Right"; really fun action RomCom with him as a male lead, Anna Kendrick as the female lead. I have no idea how it flew beneath the radar the way it seemed to given especially her celebrity status. It's not great but it's really fun, and it's Sam Rockwell's most fun role, IMO) so it'd have been fun to let him cook, and potentially bring him back as a threat in future movies. I just think making him more competent would've made him a more credible threat too, ramping up tension. Instead it felt like they turned him into a joke mainly for the "ex wife" joke at the end, how it fizzled out. Which like... sure, but I think a more dangerous villain, especially a more dangerous villain *who could return in the future*, would've been a better way to go.

Black Widow doesn't have any "powers;" she's just a highly trained & skilled field operative. Tony's character arc runs several years, across many movies. Don Cheadle replaced Howard because the latter's ego took over and he wanted a big raise for the second movie. Marvel decided "Yeah, uh no," then hired Cheadle to replace him. hence the "Look, it's me, I'm here, deal with it" line. I think Cheadle has done a fine job since. The next three movies are Thor, Captain America: First Avenger, then The Avengers. Should be fun.

It's so weird that they have Natasha show off by... using her legs to fucking flip Happy during a BOXING match. Like... can she not see it's boxing? Weird. ALSO I hate how she takes down all those dudes without putting all of them out of commission. I think a few she does, but for one she just sprays him with, what, mace? That'll take you out of the fight for a few seconds, I guess. The final one she takes out by... flipping him? That'll take him out of the fight for about 4 seconds. Seriously, the answer was IN THE SCENE. Those things she throws at at least one of those dudes that shocks him, just give her either more of those, or maybe she has some that she can throw but also some kind of device attached to her hand that allows her to shock anybody she touches. Then have her use that on EVERY combatant, not just a few. So weird to me that they didn't do that. FINALLY other than that silliness, I really do enjoy that scene. I love how they actually let Happy take his man out. I feel like it would've been so easy to show Happy being out-matched, but I think letting him win, while showing Natasha taking out *many* more combatants, while Happy is really working to beat the one guy, allows Happy to actually be a competent character while allowing Natasha to shine all the more. I appreciate that choice. ALTHOUGH holy fuck, what's with that scene where Nat is changing in the car and Happy peeks? That's fucking gross, why was that in the movie? I really wish they'd've just not had that in the movie.
