At least this OP realised his wrong doing. You can’t say the same for certain... other OPs *Looks at the Ross files OP*

Lmao I was totally misunderstanding your reference to the Ross Files because I felt like Ross was just someone who just wanted to do cool stuff with his characters no matter how often it failed and the OP for those stories was being a dick about it. I thought you were making fun of Ross and not the OP for those stories, I need more coffee. In my opinion the OP for this story went too far, and I think things mostly worked out the way he said they did, but probably with a lot of other real stuff being sorted out between him and the group.

I'll go against the grain and defend OP's pettiness here. He had malicious motives but his actions were prosocial: becoming the wizard player they needed, encouraging them to DM, running his own campaigns that they found fun, etc. It's because of his pettiness that these guys saw other, better ways the game could be played. If he had just left, the others wouldn't have had the encouragement and support necessary to spread their wings.

I love this story arch. He went from being blinded by rage to realizing what he was doing was wrong, resulting in him actually making some nice players and friends. Just had to say this real quickly, but at the start critcrab says that the girlfriend took the bad DMing pretty hard. My interpretation of the first story is different. It’s wasn’t the bad DMing that upset OPs girlfriend, it was the sexist patronising of the DM that hurt her. When they met the DM both OP and the girlfriend explained that they were experienced players, but the whole session the DM was talking to her (and only her) like a beginner. Like the part where oldboy said to her “it’s your turn to attack now. Roll the D20. That’s the one with the most sides and the number 20 on it”. They told them that she had played, but he treated her like a kid. It’s like how the gate keepers and incels in the D&D community say things like girls aren’t smart enough to play D&D. Most of the community is great! I’m a woman and I’ve met very few of these sexist players, but I know they exist. So yeah, I just wanted to correct that first bit. It wasn’t Oldboys “bad DMing” that upset the girlfriend, it was him being a condescending sexist jerk.

No it fucking wasn't. Gary fucking Gygax himself, did the 4d6 drop the lowest house rule, and let players assign their scores to the stats of their choice. The 3d6 down the line method SPECIFICALLY STIPULATES you roll your stats first, THEN pick your race, THEN pick your class... And that method was primarily used for NPC generation. This is one of those stories where the protagonist is relatable because they're petty and later question it. I think it's fairly easy to see that just leaving the group and find other people to play with would be the mature thing to do. But if it happen to you, would you want to take revenge? The story inadvertently examines the lower road that would otherwise be avoided. It's what we wonder about and even wish we did. I'm not going to advocate for people to be petty nor claim some people deserve bad things happening to them. I do have a moral problem with these things. However, I feel that denying our desires for revenge isn't healthy for ourselves or the people around us. We're humans, moral actors, our choices aren't extremely different from one another and to me there's a degree of acceptance of people's want to be bad.

I think the primary gross action was manipulating the others. The DM being vilified and pushed back against is something you can see in any CritCrab comments section, this guy's just biting back before it goes to print. Giving the DM hell is karmic, and arguably necessary. But, I'd say coaxing his future friends in directions solely intended for that end is the only earnest failing he has to apologize for. But he does. And it ends well. I'd say he did alright with this. Regardless of the emotions that motivate, I'd say there's little sin in repelling tyranny. If he kept it cleaner and less ruthless, we honestly wouldn't even be questioning his morality.

I still start players in my games at level 1, although I'll usually power them through to level 3 in a few sessions. I basically want to give players time to ease into their characters, and during this time I'll allow them to change stuff so that it better fits the personality they're going for. Level one isn't meant to be stayed at for long, IMO, its just meant to allow character building to happen over time rather than all at once.
@TheRaptureWillRise

I hate starting characters off at lvl 1. I usually only do it if there are completely new players in the group, as it's important to understand how leveling works. But if they've played once or twice, I start everyone at lvl 3. Everyone having their subclasses really lets them be unique characters, I feel. It also gives a good amount of room for backstory. It let's people have a backstory in which they've already accomplished stuff, or got their proper training (like bard colleges, for example - how did they already have their specific bard college training, if they started at lvl 1? They retroactively go to college at lvl 3?). I hate when people insist on starting at lvl 1 for no reason.

The problem is that everyone here has gotten the crazy idea that revenge is bad, even if it's motivated by a genuine wrong, the extent is appropriate, and it doesn't hurt anyone but the intended target. Moral cowardice is what it is. Disgusting. I am completely onboard with just getting revenge on the sexist old jerk.

I can't be the only one who didn't think op was being too petty. Old boy was a bad dm, the players assume that he's a good dm because they've never seen different. Op tries to teach them the difference without openly slaging off the dm

That depends largely on what one feels is 'too' petty. Thinking up and executing a several month long plan to 'steal' another DM's D&D group because he made your GF cry by being a dick to her, sounds a little like carton villain stuff. Being motivated to expose a terrible DM's many faults and actively offering the players a 'better' (agency, balance, choice, impactful) game experience, because he was so bad he hurt one you love, sounds a little like a firefighter going into danger to save others. IMHO OP took a little from column A and a little from column B. And fortunately, stopped themselves before going too deep into column A. So, mostly came to doing a good thing for bad reasons. At least until the bit about Oldboy knowingly exposing everyone to a potentially deadly virus (Even the seasonal flu is one, just not nearly on the scale Covid), if true Oldboy was/is a sh!t person and OP did them all a huge favor.

@Alfonso The Lie Weaver Eh, it's not that strange. Once bitten, twice shy, as they say, and it's possible that she didn't want to play with the same group who were friends at the time with Oldboy and thus tolerating his behavior. We had a BF/GF pair at our not-so-friendly LGS in a similar situation: they had a bad experience, BF came back (he was perfectly polite, though, unlike OP) and GF didn't return until I took over as DM and started firmly enforcing respect as a table rule.

I remember my one act of game ruining. It was D20 apocalypse. Friend group, but the DM was always weirdly a dick to me or my characters because I was new. The first time I ever played a table top was from hanging out with the friends that played and just observing and enjoying, the tales of them during D&D. I finally was given a slip in character, that was admittedly me being dumb because I was completely new to it all. I guess that sparked the vendetta, even after years, my character was always a petty target of BS or would unfairly die, so my time had finally come. D20 Apocalypse, playing in the bombed out ruins of Knoxville, TN. The DM was very trusting and as long as we made characters there and other characters talked, there was no character review. They were introduced naturally and the character sheet was never looked at. Two of my friends however, had seen my character sheet and knew what would occur, because they knew the score. He also never cared about weight limits (this will come up). Knoxville, in this setting the DM had made was a trade hub, pretty much one of those few major settlements among the pockmarked, destroyed, mutant filled remnants of the US. This would change... I played a tech character, and as such was a scavver and jury rigger. I fixed stuff, made new stuff with stuff and tried to sell stuff. I was a partial mutant and only had one arm. Because of this, I used a sawed off double barrel, because this would be easier to reload when I needed to shoot. So, I was good at rigging, I was good at scavving, and I knew my way around explosive components. We'll fast forward to the shoe falling. On the outskirts of the city was a vamp den in a bombed out building, typical clear the nasties out dungeon. Well, it was time for the DM's bull to begin and had trapped me, it was time for me to die...but it was also time for everyone to die, as on my person was enough detcord and explosives to level half of Knoxville...and I deadmanned it. Game Over.

While I will agree that he was being somewhat petty, he at least recognized that he was in the wrong for using the other players and eventually came clean! I also think that OP made the right choice in Oldboy DMing again, as it allowed the other players to see that they were better off without him after having experienced games without him DMing (in addition to seeing how bad a player he was)! Ultimately I think Oldboy getting kicked out was pure karma and that the dominoes were going to fall eventually, with or without OP!

A DM and player who enjoys playing with their partner and after trying out a shitty group, having a choice of shitty group or nothing... I dunno, maybe he went through this because she decided to take a break from DnD. Otherwise it was exposing the group to the concept of enjoyment over being punished in a self aggrandizing slog and ultimately was beneficial for the others. So OP wasn't a villain but an anti-hero.

OP did just fine! Honestly, other than initiating direct confrontation with a DM who seemed like he could've been a dangerous person in real life, these little manipulations saved the group. People are complacent creatures; those players seemed like they had gotten used to the bad DM and didn't know any better, until OP showed them. I just hope the GF found a group for herself or joined later, either way.
