Great suggestions! I always recommend classics like In a Lonely Place, All About Eve and Mildred Pierce. Those are excellent starting points for someone who is unfamiliar with the cinema of the past, especially B & W cinema. Enjoy the Criterion sale!

I love In A Lonely Place, one of my favorite Bogart performances, and might be my favorite Nicholas Ray directed movie. I’ve developed a love for 50’s melodrama, and Nicholas Ray is one of my favorite directors because of it. Have you seen They Live by Night, another crime drama by Ray in the Criterion collection. It’s a star crossed lovers on the run from the law movie, starring Farley Granger and Cathy O’Donnell. It’s really good, I recommend it

The Cremator mention!! It's my favourite local movie of all time and it makes me sad it's not more famous (but it's understandable why). The director (and a screenwriter) Juraj Herz was born in a nearby town. And I'm pretty sure his other work like Morgiana is also accessible to English speaking audience, if you are interested in seeing more of his stuff.

Excellent, thank you. My number one mainstream pick would be The Graduate. Janus titles are hidden treasures, I suggest Godland; great adventure/script and maybe the most stunning cinematography of any film ever made where wilderness and grand vistas play a central role...the cinematography is as good or better than The Revenant/Lawrence of Arabia. My recommendation for non mainstream...The Great Beauty, a top 3 Criterion fav of mine, won Academy award for best foreign language film, BAFTA and Golden Globe. Glad you like Bound, it will be one of my buys in July. 400 Blows, great Truffaut pick, and try his Jules and Jim.

Hi Stephanie! Just finished watching your video. I plan on picking up Bound for sure. I have the Olive Films Blu-ray but would like to see the Criterion treatment. Jennifer Tilly was great in this movie and I feel it was very underrated. Kind of a sleeper from the mid 1990’s when Lionsgate was a fairly newish company. All about Eve sounds interesting as does In a Lonely Place. I too have a birthday in July and the sale ends on mine! On a more personal note, I have to say I appreciate the timing of this video. I had to fly back down to Florida this past weekend, as my mom was entered in Hospice care, and it saddens me to say that she passed away. My sisters were all able to be here so she was with her family and went peacefully. We lost our father 8 years ago, so this has been a very difficult time for my sisters and me. Your video gave me 30 minutes of distraction, and I am able to look forward to something that brings me joy:watching movies. I am sharing this with you, which may seem strange because I have never met you, but I know you and your family are going through something similar. Through watching your videos, and commenting back and forth, you do feel like a friend to me, and I hope that you don’t mind that I felt the need to share this with you. Thank you, as I always say, for sharing your thoughts. You may not always think so, but your videos do matter a lot to us. -Carolyn

Hi Carolyn (friend 💞), I intentionally left your comment to be answered at a time when I was able to sit without the 4 pups crawling on me. I'm am so sorry to hear about the passing of your mom. Please know that you and your sisters are all in my thoughts. This phase of life is tough and I for one feel totally unprepared. I'm glad you and your sisters have each other to lean on. My brother is my only sibling so I'm terrified of the day when I lose him. It's always just been the two of us and our parents. I guess I just took it for granted that he and I would hold each other up as needed. As for the movies, I have that Bound Olive Signature edition as well and I can tell you the Criterion really blows it away. I was shocked at the improvement. In A Lonely Place is terrific as is All About Eve. I'm happy the video gave you a bit of a break from everything you're dealing with. I'll be posting again either today or tomorrow. 😊 I know exactly what you mean about feeling like our back and forth feeling like a legit friendship. I feel the same way. Just know I'm thinking of you and sending all the good energy I can muster up. If you ever feel the urge to reach out, my email is right in the about section of the channel. Feel free to use it. Please take care of yourself and thank you for being a friend. ❤️
@carolynscadern67875 ай бұрын
@@MovieChatter01 thank you for the kind and thoughtful response. I appreciate all the good energy, and am finding my new normal back here at home. I will miss my mother very much, but I take comfort in that she is in a better place. Like you said, this phase of life is one that I had hoped wouldn’t come around so quickly. I too felt very unprepared. My sisters and I have a large age difference and they are scattered across the states. I am in NY, one is in Florida, and the other in Iowa. We will have to lean on each other via texts or emails or the occasional Skype. I hope you can lean on your friends and partner when needed. And if I can lend an ear, I certainly will. As we get older, new friends are hard to find. I am glad that I found a friendship with you. Take care, and enjoy those pups! Carolyn

Thanks for the suggestions. The Cremator sounds intriguing. I’m definitely going get 4K Blue Velvet. Have you seen “Me You and Everyone We Know”? I highly recommend that one. It’s a bit quirky and experimental, but also accessible and touching. Sort of like in way that “True Stories” is a bit of an art film but everyone who see it likes it.

Hi friend. I don't think I have seen "Me, You And Everyone We Know" but it sounds like something I'd enjoy. It's on my list to investigate so thank you for that. The Creamator is a very different but interesting movie. Something I forgot to mention is that the director is an actually Holocaust survivor, which adds another layer to it. Blue Velvet is a winner as well. I haven't seen it in 4K but I picked up the Blu-ray a few years back and really enjoyed it. Thanks so much for watching and the movie recommendation. 😀👋👋

I'm not a fan of Dazed & Confused, buuuut, I am giving away a copy of that Criterion on my channel if anyone's interested (sorry for the plug, Stephanie). Francois' last name is pronounced True-Foe (The 400 Blows is great). And we all just call Joe Pantoliano Joey Pants.
