Thanks for another great video, DJ. It was especially cool to see John with you as I do have his TCM book about summer movies. I also haven't seen very many Tarkovsky films, but I did enjoy 1962's "Ivan's Childhood" (his first feature film). That's a good Criterion title for you to check out if you don't already have it. And nice Monet shirt, by the way.

I just picked up The Servant today at my local Barnes&Noble! Reading the synopsis its reminding me a bit of Parasite from Bong Joohn-ho. I've only ever seen Dirk Bogarde in Death in Venice and I'm eager to see him in other films. I also agree that The Elephant Man is an excellent start into Lynch. It was my first movie of his I've seen, followed by Blue Velvet which I enjoyed very much. Excellent haul you guys!

Thanks for honoring us with your new friend named John! Agreed with his description of Raging Bull. I think I watched it a second time because I saw it on the AFI list. I gave it a 9/10 and agree with him to check it out because it has one of the most dramatic endings. However, no rush because, like he said, it's not a film bro movie like Fight Club where it's an alright movie but elevated because of the teenage angst coming of age struggling with nihilism cautionary tale fandom bonding imo; from memory, Raging Bull was actually a very well crafted film. However, it might be one of those films you flex as a teenager where you might be more attracted to the tragic element. It's better than Taxi Driver imo. Casino is my favorite Martin Scorsese movie! Elephant Man was my favorite Lynch movie so hope you enjoy that. That's a must see that will endure throughout time imo. Mirror is the only Andrei Tarkovsky film I watched until I asked someone if I should stop watching since I wasn't enjoying it so appreciate that I wasn't alone, not that I wouldn't be glad discovering you loved it for encouragement to check it out again, but since we might have been on a similar wavelength, and you like Stalker, that encourages me to watch that. Also, I can't wait to hear your thoughts on Petite Maman. Haven't seen a lot of the newer films you covered, DJ, but that's my favorite foreign film in recent years besides Perfumes (2019) and Sweet Bean (2015). I'm curious if it reminded you of a more mature version of...well, we'll wait and see! Thanks again. Hope you and yours are having a great summer. Take care and God bless!

I know you are a man of faith, as was Tarkovsky, so I would be very interested in knowing your thoughts on Andrei Rublev. The only films of Tarkovsky I’ve seen are Ivan’s Childhood and Andrei Rublev-I liked his first, I loved everything about his second. Not to hype it up too much, but I have had a complicated relationship with religion, and if I ever find my way back to the faith I’m convinced it will be found in Andrei Rublev.
@JohnHenrysaysHi Жыл бұрын
@@ConnerNielsen6 Thanks, Conner! Andrei Rublev is now my most anticipated movie to watch. I've still been wanting to check out Autumn Sonata since I remember you putting that up there for best acting. And then more Liv Ullmann films after that since I think you nominated her for best actress. But, not only is it in my movie recommendation notes, but I just sent myself an e-mail to watch Andrei Rublev since it's now a high priority based on this recommendation. I hold your relatively (we're all emotionally biased as detached as we attempt to be) impartial intellectual idealized standard opinions in high regard, and it's really great to know what is meaningful for you personally as opposed to trying to look out for the people. This was a pleasant surprise. Thanks again. Hope you enjoy your week!

If you guys are discovering the universe of Coen brothers' movies, I hugely recommend to you and your wife an often overlooked gem in their filmography: "Miller's Crossing", which is in the collection. It's a top tier gangster movie/noir, intricate in the plot at the beginning, but it's absolutely worth it. Regarding "The elephant man", I don't think it's a disturbing movie, I would say instead it's a very moving and touching one. Highly recommended.

I've heard that a main cause of the Criterion sections shirnking is due to the resurgence of Vinyl, so stores need to create more room for that.

Interesting. That’s definitely not the case at any of the stores around me. Both the Criterion and vinyl sections have shrunk, because they’ve put all the manga in the media section for some reason.
