Scru hit a triple entendre with the "Gold Bars you can't escape from" line. Prison bars, gold bars, and his ability to spit("Golden Bars"). Nobody catches that one! Still, you broke this down very well, and earned a sub from me, for sure!!
@LivingLeeEUC3 жыл бұрын
It’s worth noting here that while Mansa Musa clearly and oppressively won this rap battle, it’s because Scru himself came up in the battle rap scene, whereas ERB serves a milder tone and audience catering more to education and entertainment. Scru wrote his own verses in this minus a few of the lead-ins (he wrote his part blind, completely unaware of what Bezos’ lines would be), and that aptitude for battle rap and personal flare really shines through in this video. Overall one of the best ERB’s of all time, between the beat, the feature from an up and coming artist, and a truly perfect matchup. Great video through and through, this breakdown earned a sub from me
@Mat4yo3 жыл бұрын
That's a very possible explanation! I do feel like the tonality was totally different and we can certainly attribute most of it to Scru, and then a little bit to how Bezos' character traits specifically demand him not to rap as hard as Scru did. I appreciate the comment and hope you stick around for more!
@Aquila0093 жыл бұрын
I believe one of the big thing is that, and I believe Mat learned this when working with them, the ERB guys are Comedians and impressionists first, rappers second. They only use rap as a medium to bring their jokes across. While Mat and Scru are rappers first and put comedy in their raps. This makes the ERB less technically built raps, since the jokes sometimes take precedence to the flow. This is okay, it‘s just a different style.
@Pardoxia3 жыл бұрын
You mentioning how Bezos bragging about achievements is a bad strategic move after being lyrically destroyed by Musa immediately reminded me of Thanos' second verse in Thanos v. Oppenheimer

Wait, were you not impressed then by King Richard vs Ragnar Lodbrok? I thought it had a lot of excellent wordplay and it's always nice to see a good old proper historical rap battle. Surprised you didn't think that one was worth breaking down? ('I'm the Lion King man but that's a messed up circle of life' was such a bar lol)
@Mat4yo3 жыл бұрын
Not to say I didn't enjoy it, because every ERB is fantastic. I just knew very little about each character and didn't think I could add much to the conversation by analyzing it. The lion king line is a standout!
@TheTrueKrazyKat3 жыл бұрын
I'm unsure if you noticed it or just didn't point it out but just before and during the part in which Scru raps about Bezos' father leaving him he raps in a way similar to the final rap battle in 8 Mile.

My brother is a linguistics professor and often quizzes people on how they pronounce homophones (as it gives a lot of insight into your natural accent). Whenever he has me say homophone pairs, for some reason I have the hardest time saying “popper” and “pauper” (I attribute this to the fact that I don’t find myself needing to say either word very often). You'd been my favorite artist (in no small part due to chisel this, I absolutely love being able to understand what goes into the work) for a year or so already, that's like half a decade! Like dude I can't understate how much of an inspiration you've been for me artistically, punching entirely new avenues of expression in areas I would have never thought of (I'm a writer, no music involved whatsoever, so the most you've helped me with directly is to think even more complexly about word choice). So I guess I just like saying thanks for being awesome and *showing* it to us for so many years.

@saajiddaya21523 жыл бұрын
I've realized this about ERB, but the way that they portray their characters tells a lot about them. For example, this one portrays Bezos as an arrogant man who doesn't care about anyone but himself, whereas Mansa Musa is portrayed as a guy who's trying to take down this corrupt guy. Also, homophones: an, stan, ban, etc.

Honestly, my favorite line in this battle was one that was honestly just a lead-in. _"What's the long-term play of giving your wealth away, eh?"_ It just really is a good showing of the differing philosophies regarding wealth, with Bezos being somewhat infamous in being a guy who's pretty damn ruthless in how he treats folks, both with the mom and pop shops and his own employees, and Mansa Musa arguably being one of the most famous philanthropists in history.

In this case Bezos is a man who just wants to have fun and feel good all of the time. Sure Mansa torn into him in his second verse but Bezos wouldn't care and would continue to boast about himself. Of the 7 ERBs before this one ("recent" in quotation marks), I thought that "Mother Teresa vs Sigmund Freud" and "The Joker vs Pennywise" were among ERB's best, "Ragnar Lodbrok vs Richard the Lionheart" and "Harry Potter vs Luke Skywalker" were great but not incredible, "Vlad the Impaler vs Count Dracula" was just good, "Donald Trump vs Joe Biden" has its moments but was subpar, and "Thanos vs J Robert Oppenheimer" is in this weird place where Thanos was terrible but Oppenheimer was seriously the single best performance in ERB history. What are your thoughts on these battles?

Don't take it out of context, I enjoy every ERB. I just didn't feel like I knew enough about the characters to contribute anything to the conversation. Joker vs Pennywise is the best out of all of those you listed, but it would have taken me literally 2 straight days non stop to make that analysis. ERB is so infrequent that they come at different times of your life and I'm not in that place where I can analyze every single one anymore.

Bezos shot himself in the foot by first saying he never heard of Mansa but than calls him overrated. So which is it? You can't have it both ways. Be consistent. 🤷♂️

For the homophones you should use “Need” and “Knead”

@@Mat4yo Hmmm hmmm to knead or not to need. Well I should think on that as I need to knead some dough while kneading a blanket XD.

I've never heard anyone successfully use mettle, metal, medal, and meddle in a single song, much less a single verse, so that's my homophone challenge.
