You can find the actual historical references anywhere, what Mat does isn’t really explaining the meaning of the lyrics, but instead the rhymes and the general tone of the battle.

The reference to him being shot actually happened. At the start of one of his speeches, he got shot by someone. Instead of getting medical attention, however, he continued an hour long speech, saying: "Ladies and Gentleman, as you may have noticed, I have been shot. However, a bullet can't stop the Bull Moose."
@rogerpayne27145 жыл бұрын
I love the line about how Roosevelt was " Born asthmatic you're going to choke hard while I wake up everyday and chain smoke cigars" Not sure why but it's my favorite line in this battle.
@nathanback25446 жыл бұрын
I feel like there’s a small nugget that everyone seems to miss in the rap: Grow a SPRUCE mustache isn’t a reference to Roosevelt being able to grow a mustache as suggested in the video, it’s actually a reference to Roosevelt’s involvement with establishing national parks. He helped found the Sierra Club and did a lot of Conservation work. This also comes back to bite him with the, “while you were back home opening national parks!” line from Churchill. Love the video, just found your channel.

I think the diss about the size of the UK was more effective because Churchill wanted to preserve the Empire but ultimately failed. Roosevelt also had imperialist tendencies, so he's telling Churchill, "Look what your Empire has become compared to the one I built."

I watched a reaction/analysis of the battle from another person and they mentioned that "I''ll fight you and I'll beat ya see?" could allude to the fact that Roosevelt lost sight in one eye from a boxing match. So if this is a reference, Churchill basically states that he could beat Roosevelt whether it be a military, rap or boxing battle and that he might leave him Roosevelt blinder. Could be reaching, but I think it fits well enough to be considered.

Ehh, I disagree with the "picked off" part. I think what roosevelt was trying to say there less that he was being deliberate and removing specific lives (which picked off insinuates) and was moreso referring to the complete carelessness of just throwing away allied lives in the Gallipoli campaign in WW1 in which churchill was a commanding officer, likening churchill's treatment of his soldiers to that of someone throwing away the scraps of an eaten meal. In short, roosevelt is saying that churchill didn't value the lives of his soldiers, so he sucks.

I disagree with what he said about the dinner plate line. You choose what to take off. Churchill didn't just go "You can die, you can die, I'll save you." Tossed away works better because he didn't care about the extra lives being taken. Just like you wouldn't care about the extra food you're putting in the trash.
@Mat4yo8 жыл бұрын
it's not that we disagree, it's just you prefer the other option - I prefer neither but wanted to open the door to another idea the two ideas are derived from different points of the eating experience: picking off being at the beginning of a meal and tossed away being at the end
@mikeburrell14337 жыл бұрын
Hey man, just a quick point about the Gallipoli/scraps off a plate part. The point they are making is that Churchill threw away lives there, like throwing food scraps into a bin, he didn't pick at them like a picky eater. They are suggesting that it was a callous and uncaring act, so their words actually fit perfectly.

18:55 from what i heard from a commenter was that winston and theodore both boxed. you could take that line as winston challenging theodore that no matter where they fought be it the battlefield, on a rap field, or a boxing ring he would beat him. it could explain the fighting pose winston makes during this line.

19:00 I think you omitted the structure of the Churchill's quote the used lines were based on in this judgement. The quote is long and refers to a number of places one can fight someone, which Dan sums up by simply saying that whatever the theatre shall be, his victory is undisputed.

IMO, Dan Bull is brilliant at emulating the character he is rapping. Dan Bull did a fantastic job there. What really annoyed me the most was the fact that that they use the Union of the United Kingdom and morph it into Alabama. This is factually incorrect. England is the size of Alabama, but UK is the size of Wyoming or Oregon. This I thought was poor form. England does not have a legislative government, Britain has a parliament. As for the 'Parks, Yes' that just seemed to be an emulation of Churchill's idiosyncratic speech was in parliament. a missed opportunity was where Roosevelt regretted his love of war and conquest after Cuba, and shame They didn't let Churchill had a go at him for this. Also Churchill was a European Prince, his family was given the status of royalty after Blenheim, and there are plenty accounts that the Queen received great guidance from Churchill to save a very fragile monarchy. All of these could've been used. Also Mat4yo, Big Ben is the largest bell in the tower - the tower however is known as Elizabeth Tower. :)

I also thought the "put you in a pram so you can throw your toys out" was a rebuttal to the "thank god for Pearl Harbour" line, dissing US letting the world burn because they didn't want to go to war, but were quite willing to throw all their military toys across to UK rather then coming themselves. As well as arriving in Europe after the tide had already turned to showing off their toys in a show of power as Berlin fell.

The "any way you want to fight I'll fight you and I'll beat ya see?" line is something I've always thought as Churchill mocking Roosevelt's almost stereotypical "old timey" persona (at least portrayed in ERB). Churchill ends a couple of lines with 'yes' which may have been influenced by the mascot of an insurance company here in the UK called Churchill, a British bulldog whose catchphrase is 'Oh, yes' delivered in the style of Winston Churchill. I have to disagree on your change suggestion at 9:30, Mounting animals heads on walls is a practice in hunting and this line would suggest that roosevelt is determining churchill's fate to being deafeted in this battle as he would an animal before hunting as roosevelt was known to also participate in hunting. also at 11:35 i would disagree about picked vs tossed away as picking is more precise compared to tossing away leftovers (scraps) as its a more general thing leading to the idea of reackless abandonment of many lifes over picking that would suggest more precise choosing of lost lives. Your suggested change for the beaches lines breaks apart the similarity to the original quote that is being played off of and also breaks the pattern in the scheme. (also see isnt an old man thing to say but instead its a word to imply you are proving what you have just stated)

But you forgot one or two things: One, when T.R. says "Rough Riding down to Cuba", it's a reference to the "Rough Riders", which was the cavalry group Roosevelt led during the Spanish-American War, fought in Cuba. Second, during the "slow-down" scene, when the lightning flashes, it lights up both a man on a horse, another reference to Roosevelt's military service, and it lights up a large paratrooper drop, a reference to British Paratroopers, which were essential during WW2. Overall, excellent video. Keep it up!

The Yes!'s used during the fight might actually be a reference towards the parliament that Churchill had to control during the war, as people who agreed with a governments idea or vision would show by calling out Yes! or Hear! As a way of approval, this is used in the battle to create the atmosphere of Churchill's historical influence. Being present in parliament during a time of war, people would leave the decisions down to him. This creates a clever effect as if a crowd is approving of Churchill's rap lyrics against Roosevelt's

My only real problem with the battle was the structure of Winston's early lines, a lot of them were simply too long: 15 syllables each, while the average seems to be 10-12. This wouldn't be too bad for me if they couldn't be rectified so easily. Take "I was saving the planet from an axis of darkness" (14 syllables) "while you were back home opening national parks, yes!" (13 syllables) and simply change it to "I saved the word from an axis of darkness" (11 syllables) "You just stayed home opening national parks, yes!" (12 syllables) That not only cuts down on the syllable count, keeping consistency with the rhyme scheme, but also fixed the lines historical inaccuracy. Using "While you were back home" implies that World War 2 and Roosevelt's term in office took place simultaneously, when in reality Roosevelt never even lived to see World War 2. Not a big fan of the EpicLlyod line either, even when compared to the "what's up bitches!" line. I think it goes too far with the fourth wall breaking. Referencing Roosevelt's ERB motto is one thing (that comes expected), but Churchill's line full on acknowledges that they're characters played by actors. Plus, it makes absolutely no sense to an average viewer who knows nothing about ERB. I think it would have made more sense to use the line to compare Roosevelt to another politician, perhaps Taft, whom Roosevelt personally chose as his successor. I'd chance the line from "I'm the rhyme minister fresh in a hat and dinner jacket" (15 syllables) "You look like a mix of EpicLloyd and a pringles packet." (15 syllables) to "I'm the rhyme minister, timeless in a tweed jacket" (13 syllables) "You're just a dafter Will Taft mixed with a pringles packet" (14 syllables) This change cuts down the syllable count, removes the confusing line, and mocks Roosevelt's renowned egotism by claiming him to be worse than his protege; while also rebuffing Churchill to be timeless with his appearance. Either way; I'm no expert, those are just some of the changes I'd personally make.

my only complaint about the visuals is that the "forced perspective" (am I using the term correctly?) makes the two items on the floor (on either side of the book cases) look bigger than they should. in fact, at first I thought the disco light was on the desk. if you were going for that look on purpose because it's kinda funny, cool, but at the very least you might want to change the colour of the floor or the desk so they contrast a bit more.

They Yes's from Winston's verse is a reference to how the British Government calls out during their meetings in the house of commons, most of the time when a political party makes a call out to another party and the house agrees you commonly hear a chant of "Hear, hear!" or "Yes!" Which is why you have background vocals emerging from the foreground line beforehand. It's a cultural thing but adds to Churchill's character.

I loved Churchill in this ERB rap, it was bloody brilliant!! I just hoped they said "pass me MY cigar" instead of "A cigar" which gives his cigars a more meaningful purpose since they are a very important symbol of Churchill. I also wished they used Churchills last words on his death bed which were "I'm bored of it all" before going into a coma and dying 9 days later. There could have been a line like "I'm bored of it all, you and the bombs, i could go in a coma and nine days later you still wouldn't have won"

That quote would have been powerful! The minor word change is something I care for but others are indifferent

"anyway you want to fight, I'll fight you and I beat ya see" is an indication to both Roosevelt's boxing history, which is shown mainly physically here (which Roosevelt showed physically and verbally at the sentance "don't you go toe-to-toe with me, you bloated drunk old man") and to the fact that Roosevelt has bad eyesight (the "ya see" part). It is a quite overlooked sentance but it is also quite a decent sentance, even though it could be better.

"W.C." Is actually used a lot in the modern world, in Canada, the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Etc. it's still used today alongside "restroom", "loo", "toilet", Etc. and it's also used in many other countries like the Netherlands, and Việt-Nam.

Could also stand for Western Cape, but that's probably not intended. I mean the Western cape in South Africa actually uses a different number plate system then the rest of South Africa to avoid having WC stamped on them...

When the line comes up saying "I'll fight ya and I'll beat ya see?" Throwing up his hands like He was ready to fight. This reference was to Teddy's boxing days and how he went partially blind will boxing, hence the reference "I'll beat ya see" which is poking fun of him losing his sight.

There was another reference in that last verse that Roosevelt refers to when he says "A bullet can't stop the bull moose" which nobody seems to catch. In 1912 Roosevelt fell victim to an assassination attempt just before he was about to give a speech. He survived the attempt and then went on to deliver his speech before seeking medical attention. During his opening statement he said "I don't know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot. It takes more than that to kill a bull moose."

I just realized something, if you go back to the Hannibal Lector vs Jack the Ripper erb you'll see that when jack says" Fuck the 7/7 bombers, he puts up the same deuce shown here. It also features dan bull. So apparently erb already knew about this.
@DuoXCity7 жыл бұрын
I dig the analysis, but I disagree on the assessment towards the line "Anyway you want to fight, I'll fight you and I'll beat you". This line is referencing Teddy's interest in many various competitive sports and activities, and references back to the very beginning of the song when Teddy mentions this fact ("I love competition!"). This made the line even stronger in my opinion, since it shows how little Churchill is impressed by Roosevelt's exploits. And of course, is closer in tone to Churchill's famous speech.

I really enjoyed this breakdown, it consisted more of facts, and your delivery of them was both what made me sub to you and watch all the way through. I find that a lot of the time when a long video is this analytical/long and they are more opinion based analysis they leave a lot of room for interpretation, not to mention opinions can often lead to false positives, whereas there is little room for that when it is based off of facts. Sure things can and will be missed no matter how analytical, or time you spend on trying to catch every single thing, especially if you are trying to watch time constraints/trying to make sure you are entertaining enough that people do not become bored and click that little X, or go to another video. I noticed some of the references/disses, namely the walk softly and carry a big stick, but seeing all the ones that I missed from you, and even some of your viewers, really blows my mind.
