The thing about the ID weapons was actually already stablished in MGS2 in the Plant section. The Coronel explains that Raiden can't steal enemies weapons because of it and weapons will have to be found on site due to it. It actually hints that Snake isn't with the Seals during the first Vamp Attack,as Raiden is able to shoot with his gun.

"Why did Snake spend the last decade getting good at CQC?" Well, according to a codec call with Otakon, Snake learned CQC from Big Boss himself, but he just didn't want to use it because he was so disgusted by him and everything that could relate to him. Yeah, that's an ass pull but it's still an explanation.
@blitzkriegdragon0137 жыл бұрын
Not the worst ass pull I've heard of. It makes sense that Snake was trained in CQC, and adding that snake stoped using it as an excuse for the simple combat in previous games is pretty decent.

@Snakethoot7 жыл бұрын
Wrong Hawk, in MGS1 you can also grab the enemies. This gives you the option tu throw them, stun them or break their necks. It's not a matter of technical capabilities. Kojima just inventend the concept of CQC in MGS3 and it became a fan favorite. So not using it in MGS4 was out of the question. Therefore the ass pull reason of "I knew how to do it, I just didn't want to do it."

Confession time: I was one of the fans who wanted to know who the Patriots were. I agree that until the credits of mgs2 their identity wasn't relevant, but in the call after the credits the player discovers the data regarding the names of the Patriots that snake and otacon acquired were false. If this didn't happen I would have thought "the Patriots are some old guys we don't know, snake deals with them offscreen, the end" but the inclusion of that final conversation made me think there was a reason they were still hiding the Patriots' identities. I also like the fact that the cast from mgs3 is revealed to be the Patriots, it shows that people don't do evil things because they're inherently evil, but because their goals get distorted along the way. I understand why people didn't like the revelation though, it is a bit too much of a coincidence to have every character in the series be connected in some way.

Deborah Meltrozo it was one of the most underwhelming reveals for me, for sure.. They went from sinister, creepy (amplified by the bugging out AI) and shrouded in mystery to those guys, because of “fuck this, don’t want to make this sequel, cant be bothered to write the backstory for these guys so let’s just make these guys the patriots”

I at least liked it because of Zero alone. Zero, despite being a bit of a goofball, seemed like he knew more what was going on in the background and knew more than he was letting on compared to the amateurs that came with him. I understand why there may be so much hate due to retcons and whatnot. The huge coincidence of the patriots being the team from operation snake eater was definitely a curveball for me knowing the way they were in mgs3 but I have 2 things to say about the outcry from fans about this: 1-people change over time and the experiences they go through, and we are talking about 54 years between mgs3 and mgs4, from 1964 to 2018 a lot can happen. Simply between snake eater and operation intrude n313 there are about 30 years in between. If we have come to accept that the hero who was given the name big boss for saving the world and averting ww3 descended into a war monger who threatened the world, why is it so farfetched to accept that the team that supported him in this endeavor in spite of their good intentions created an organization that would take a life of its own and create the war-bound world of mgs4? Not to mention all of this was to fullfill what they believed was the boss's will which is why Big Boss was also a member. 2-coincidence as it may have been, the identies of the founding members of the patriots served to converge all of the storylines from previous entries to this one and bring them to an ultimate conclusion. Would we as fans have preferred that the patriots or their founding members never be revealed, especially after the final conversation in mgs2? Or on another note, would it have been more satisfying that the patriots be characters that have nothing to do with the existing cast, requiring the shoehorned introduction and development of them as the big villains of the franchise, even when a strong point of the mgs series is that the physical villains are not necessarily the ultimate villains?

All I'm saying is that nobody had a problem rationalizing Big Boss's descent from a charismatic James Bond-type into a nuclear-powered warlord. But then it's a big problem when his support team collaborates to create a united world which ultimately gets out of hand and devolves into a decades-long proxy war with said warlord and his legacy after they have a falling out over a difference in the interpretation of The Boss's will. I think a lot of people see "The Patriots" and read "the villains of MGS." But that's not really true, is it? The Patriot AI in MGS2 and 4 certainly are villains, but the war economy that the AI installs is not the future that Zero or his colleagues desired. They aren't moustache-twirling cartoon villains. They simply paved the road to hell with good intentions. Zero created the Patriot AI to keep his work alive when the Patriots themselves were gone. In the absence of any authority, the AI grew without control; it went rogue. The S3 Plan and the war economy are the result of a system of algorithms boiling down real life into something that a program can interpret and control. Ultimately, who created the Patriot AI, or what their intentions were, is irrelevant. The AI leaves those intentions behind as it chases its ideal world of a programmable reality. Anyway, the thing I love most about MGS4 is how thoroughly and unrelentingly it wraps its main theme into every aspect of the game: death. The death of MGS. The Psyche gauge and stress percentage gamifies the difficulties of old age. The game's color palette, while at first resembling MGS4's contemporaries, more appropriately evokes the feeling of a sunset. The fanservice, the mashed-together references and motifs, it's not unlike having your life flash before your eyes in your last moments. But when you get to revisit Shadow Moses, it's dead. Cold. You can't go back, why did you think you could? Snake's mission in MGS4 is the same as Kojima's: finish what he started all those years ago. Snake's too old, Kojima's too tired. But it's their duty to see the mission through. And so Solid Snake's final mission is (or should have been) the end of Metal Gear. MGS4 is, in my eyes, the most personal MG in the series, and a game truly unlike any other because of that.

Exactly! That's why I feel the game works... I think that the statement I agree with most in George's analysis is "There was not a game like this, and there never will be a game like this again." MGS4 is a worthy (chronological) ending to the series. It is crazy, it is messy...but it is a kind of controlled chaos that, though somewhat imperfect (like all of the games, honestly), wraps up a legend in the world of gaming in a fitting (and overall fairly excellent) manner. Say what you will about IGN, but their description for MGS4's review is spot on: "A legendary hero gets a legendary sendoff"... See, I think that some people associate quality with perfection. I don't think George expects this (I think he is reasonable, and smart-liking the game is a matter of opinion at the end of the day), but I see people getting hung up over the game's level of "perfection" often... Fanboys are the only ones who call things "perfect" and none of these games are perfect. NO game is perfect, and no one should expect a perfect product, only a quality one; human beings make games, and Kojima and his team are certainly... interesting... people :)
@FronkZappa7 жыл бұрын
I have reservations about the game but you perfectly summed up everything it is I love about it, particularly the aspect of death and it's importance to the story as well as the fact that the Patriots are not simply static villains but, rather, meant to tie into the overarching theme of genes/memes and how we pass on our legacy. The legacy of The Boss became so distorted over time, and really it was through Raiden's arc and Old Snake's acceptance of his fate in MGS4 that we see the heroic aspect of this concept, living for something you truly believe in. Solidus Snake once believed in something, but his vision became tainted - being impotent and unable to pass on his genes, he became consumed with the desire simply to pass on his image, to be only product of Les Infant Terribles to surpass their unwitting doppelganger Big Boss. If I had to pick a theme of the game, I'd say that's it. Big Boss never truly learned to live for his own ideals - his image was so molded by his mentor that he served only as a proxy to legitimize the Patriots' goals and desires. Solid Snake started on a similar path, but his heroism was balanced out by his growing cynicism and his understanding that he'd been a pawn, opting from MGS2 to truly take his own path and, in MGS4, accept and come to terms with who he'd been for so long... "Just an old killer"

The difference between Big Boss and the likes of Para-Medic is that the former had a far greater emotional and psychological attachment to The Boss, so it's obvious something like the (Admittedly retarded) ending of Peace Walker would greatly affect him to the point of becoming a power-hungry warmonger. The same cannot be said about Para-Medic, who was basically nothing more than an intern for the duration of the mission; there's no reason for her to be so influenced by The Boss or Operation: Snake Eater as a whole that she became the next Dr. Mengle. That's why MGS4 sucks in that regard.
@the_echoYT7 жыл бұрын
The important thing to remember as well is that none of these characters have a heel-turn. We're talking decades of character growth which unfortunately even now exists only off-screen. The Dr. Clark that resurrected Gray Fox as a cyborg ninja is *36 years* removed from the Para-Medic who told Naked Snake about old movies during Operation Snake Eater. There isn't one point in any of these characters lives where they suddenly become someone else. It's a gradual shift based on their personal beliefs, experiences, and the ever-shifting sociopolitical landscape around them.

Yes! Happy New Year, George. Thanks. All valid criticisms, the game is pure unadulterated fan service and the story is in its own way but yet I can’t help but love MGS4 scars and all. It’s what makes it work. Playing as Old Snake returning to Shadow Moses really is something special when you first experienced it as a child in 98 and are now an adult yourself. That was certainly the point and it succeeded. As a boy and now a man who’s been estranged from his father for most of his life, the final scene with Big Boss and Old Snake is one of the most significant emotional touchstones in gaming for me personally. In a series about tactical espionage action full of intrigue, super soldiers, meta narratives, geopolitics, and anti nuclearism, this is the most human moment to be had. I’ll always love it. “I've never thought of you... As a son. But I've always respected you as a soldier. And as a man.”

Personally, I loved MGS4. For me, it hit all the emotional notes it intended to, the story (like Sons of Liberty) is becoming more relevant as time goes on, and the humor wasn't lacking (the fanservice WAS the humor). There are some awkward moments that I didn't like, and the gameplay is too easy, but I think overall it's a great game. I see your point of how much of a bloated mess it is, and how a lot of the word content could have been excised without any detriment to the story, but this game is better when taken as part of the package that is the franchise rather than a standalone entry.
@theorichardson94287 жыл бұрын
The first time I played ANY Metal Gear I played 1-4 and PW one after the other for about two weeks in the in-universe chronological order (I purchased the Legacy Collection for PS3 which made that incredibly easy), therefore having played these games as a "package" I loved this game. In addition to this the graveyard scene was a really powerful end to the series. This video is still excellent though.

I wouldn't say I loved 4 but I did enjoy it and don't hate it. 2 was my first MGS game, although I knew about the events of the first, and I loved the story of 2 and replayed the game so many times. @bryandacote81096 жыл бұрын
I agree with you fully here. MGS4 has it's flaws, but I feel this review - which does make a lot of good points - comes off as more of a rant on how much he HATES the game. My introduction to the series actually wasn't through the gameplay - honestly I was intimidated by how much the characters went on about the detail and such of the gameplay, but I wanted to see the story so I watched the cutscenes of 1 - 4 (Peace Walker wasn't even a thing yet) starting with MGS3, then 1, 2 and finally 4 back to back to back. I love the story to MGS4. I do roll my eyes now upon revisit to the long explanations about the lore (for example; Big Mama/Eva's explanation) but it still has so much heart. Yeah the memorable moments in these are fan-servicy as hell, but that's the point and appeal. SomecallmeJohnny and TheGamingBritShow do a good job in their reviews of MGS4 at both criticizing the game but also praising it. The game's story is the ultimate wrap up to the series's over-all story with a bitter-sweet tone. Gameplay wise. most certainly the easiest in the series but I don't really mind that. It can be annoying to those who want a challenge, but not everyone wants a challenge. Some want to enjoy it. I do think it combines the gameplay of 1 - 3 into an awesome blend that really works. Probably the thing that makes the game too easy is Drebin's store since you don't need to worry about ammo or getting the right gun and such for the right situation.

The ending fight between Snake and Liquid Ocelot is pure fan service, but it could be one of my favorite parts of the whole series. I'd still put Big Boss standing over The Boss's grave in 3 over it, but the ending of 4 gives me the feels so bad.

I wonder if this video is accidentally meta. George doesn't want to talk about MGS4 and Kojima didn't want to make it. I was expecting to have my perception of MGS4 changed or learn something new or be shocked I didn't think of something but basically I only saw stuff I've already thought of and someone telling me I'm wrong for thinking Chapter 3 sucks especially on repeat playthroughs because I cannot make Mr.Whistler move faster. Is this as dissatisfying a conclusion as MGS4 on purpose? Also I hope he'll cover PW or PO even though he probably doesn't want to either.
@Tamacat3887 жыл бұрын
GuyOnAChair George has kinda dismissed any MGS game after 3. And given his commentary on 4 I don't really care to see what he had to say about PW or MPO. These kinds of videos should be reserved for games he enjoys, whenever he talks about things he doesn't like I always find them far less entertaining and far less analytical.

Personally, I've always thought of MGS4 as Kojima's way of warning fans to be careful what they wish for. He had no intention of diving back into that proverbial pool, but he was pestered, hounded, ridiculed, and ultimately had death threats leveled at him. Mad genius that he is, this was Kojima's version of throwing his hands up, exasperated, and saying "Fine, you want it, you got it. But you WILL NOT enjoy it." The fan base took the lore too seriously; took everything too seriously. Hideo Kojima gave the fans what they thought they wanted, and he was put through the wringer for it, just as he knew he would be. As he's said, after MGS2, he was done. I think they only reason he made 3 with such passion, was that he believed in it. It was a story that he wanted to tell, told the way he wanted to tell it. 4 never occurred to him until he'd finally had enough and figured out a way to both satisfy (we thought) the fans, and also to force them to leave him the hell alone.

The fact snake is a tired old man kinda says that, I've heard a KZbinr talking about MGS4 and he said something like "sometimes it's best if we do not know what happened with our heroes", and MGS 4 is basically it, snake is dying, the supporting cast of MGS3 became the villains that enslaved humanity, Raiden became a cyborg that doesn't care about his own life, everything, and everyone is so fucked up that you would think "man, I'd rather not see them like this"

"Took the lore too seriously" why is this shit so common? I hear people say the same shit about Evangelion. Dude, if the plot takes itself seriously, I will too. There is no way mgs2 is meant to be light-hearted. You're meant to take every part of the patriots storyline seriously. I understand the fans are partially at fault, but definitely not for this.
@hypermonkeybird49452 жыл бұрын
@@boarpsimson8675 its not that people took the story of 2 too seriously its that they took the actual lore too seriously. 2 is a video game. it is a video game about being a video game. people take it too far and make theories like "was mgs2 all virtual reality" because of some misguided belief that the only way a video game can express ideas is through literal plot events. mgs4 is what happens if you take the most literal interpretation of mgs2 happening "in-universe" for a fictional video game universe and try to explore what happens afterwards when it was never about that and was about the message. the end of the game is literally raiden rejecting his role as a player character in a video game. "taking the lore too seriously" absolutely applies for mgs fans in regards to 2.

In MGS2 Liquid wanted to _control_ the Patriots while in MGS4 he just wanted them out of the way so he could control the Guns of the Patriots program for his own benefit. I suppose, for Snake and friends, the fact that Liquid accomplishes _half_ of his goals is mutually beneficial, after that all they had to do was make sure he didn't finish the _rest_ of his goals. Either way this is the way _I_ always interpreted the story, hilariously confusing as it is, I may play through it again just to be sure. MGS4 isn't one of the best games of all time but it will _always_ hold a special place in my heart for personal reasons.

That's not how I saw it at all. After a whole series of Ocelot triple-crossing people over and over, it turns out he's not as much of a bad guy as we thought. Big Boss split from the Patriots, and Ocelot followed. So the events of MGS1, 2, and 4 were orchestrated by Ocelot in order to destroy the Patriots. And the only way he could do that was by appearing to be the big bad of the series so that the Patriots would see Ocelot as a bigger threat than Snake and Snake would attempt to stop him, which ended the Patriots at the same time.

I'm in near total agreement with pretty much everything in this video, but one thing I wanted to point out is that I don't view Naomi's suicide as purely fan service. Sure, that's an undeniable element of it, but if you look at her character, she clearly has reservations about the work she's done. Enjoyed the video a lot. I will say that it was definitely Peace Walker that changed the core game mechanic of tranquilizer head shots though. Before this game, there was no need to engage a soldier of any kind unless you just wanted to in order to have fun. All that mattered was that they didn't see you and raise the alarm. The soldiers in the Pre-Peace Walker games were as safe around me as a sleeping child, simply a knock on one side of a surface and a switch around or have them investigate a tossed item and they never even knew I was there. However, with Peace Walker's base building mechanic and the absolute requirement to recruit enemy soldiers into your rank via force, well... that peacefulness turned into, "sorry, but you're going to have to come with me." So it was that game that saw even a seasoned, 'sneaky sneaky' Metal Gear player like me living for the head shot.

I agree with the video. I wish MGS4 respected the symbol and message that the Patriots represented in MGS2. It had so much depth. The meaning and symbol of the Patriots was much more important. When MGS4 transformed the Patriots to something literal and chose the MGS3 team as a literal explanation it took away what MGS2 and to some extend what MGS3 left for us to ponder on. Hideo Kojima intended the Patriots to be something else. When the end credits in 2 revealed that they were dead 100 years ago, he meant that the Patriots represented the collective information that was defined by a class that ruled a nation (i.e the founding fathers and the elites), and regardless if they are dead, the information still lives. The information is digested and passed on from generation to generation. That information programs societies to think and act in certain ways. Like for example the sense of patriotism and values which may be based on selective choice of history and half truths. All these information, all these values that people carry as a form of identity and self importance, through the collective thought of societies it act's like an organism. At some point those thoughts took a "flesh" of their own in the AI in the form of the Patriots now acting like conscious individuals that work to keep societies thinking in specific ways and as a mass. But the essence of Patriots is not the AI. The essence of the Patriots are those values, ideas and information that pre-existed the AI but were inherited and passed on. The Patriots were so much more than just Zero's and his team''s interpretation of the Boss' dream. They were neither the AI nor People. the AI Colonel: To begin with -- we're not what you'd call -- human. Over the past two hundred years -- A kind of consciousness formed layer by layer in the crucible of the White House. It's not unlike the way life started in the oceans four billion years ago. The White House was our primordial soup, a base of evolution -- We are formless. We are the very discipline and morality that Americans invoke so often. How can anyone hope to eliminate us? As long as this nation exists, so will we Snake at the end of the game: The Patriots are a kind of ongoing fiction too, come to think of it.... The Patriots simply did NOT exist as anything "tangible". Only as an idea that makes people in the MGS2 universe think and act in certain ways.
@mathematics5573 жыл бұрын
Couldn’t of said it better myself, I always felt you were never meant to see what the patriots look like, by doing so would be equivalent to seeing Master Chief face from halo. In my mine chronologically the series canonically ended at MGS2 Sons of liberty.

At best we already had the Philosophers from Metal Gear Solid 3 to lay the foundation for them, an elite group making deals behind the scenes and manipulating the times, who's inheritance would pretty much be an ongoing fiction of control and conspiracy with seemly no end
@LongSinceDead12 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, you nailed it perfectly. It’s why the Patriots are so compelling and terrifying in 2 - they are the bedrock that makes up the nation itself. A consciousness born from the memes that have been passed on to build the systems that govern the nation. They represent something more - more than any cabal of Illuminati board members ever could. They are the country itself.

And seeing all these things taken apart by you made me question myself. Am I really that big of a stupid fanboy that I like this trainwreck? I don't know. I still think MGS3 is the pinnacle of the series just as you do, but I can't look at this as a failure. No shame in liking something that objectively has some pretty major issues. Given the circumstances of its development, I can't imagine a version of the game that doesn't have serious flaws, even when you look at some of Kojima's ballsier ideas for earlier drafts of the script. He was trying to tie up loose ends he never intended to tie up. Still, the game manages to be pretty fun to play, even if it's probably my least played in the franchise. I still give it a go anytime I feel like going through the games in chronological order. The return to Shadow Moses alone makes it worth popping in every now and then.

A lot of his arguments are quite shallow though. The Patriot rant was absolutely nonsensical. "You're telling me these jokey fun loving people turned into unintentional monsters? Ridiculous." Meanwhile "Big Boss' turn from a fun loving man into an unintentional monsters was inspired." The microwave rant was also dumb because I never saw the plot whole. Mk. 2 can't upload without going out of stealth mode. The moment that happens, the mini geckos would fucking kill him. Snake was sent to aggro them. The Liquid and Snake fight was a great way to end the whole series. It's two men literally trying to kill each other for the sake of "we gotta settle the score." MGS4 is no where near the trainwreck George says it is, and this video was honestly so disappointing. Sure, it had problems, but it wasn't MGS V. And I actually like that game, but that game had some real story problems.

When I finished MGS2 I went to watch your critical close up on it, and stopped when MGS4 got involved because I hadn't played it yet. Now that I finished 4 I started watching this, but stopped when V got involved because I haven't played it yet. Can't wait to finish V and come back to a new upload with spoilers for Metal Gear Survive

@@mcsonicsimpson Survive ain't great. Once you're done with 5 you're pretty much good. Survive at least has the core of 5's gameplay but it's in service of nothing.

It feels like the saga of Critical Close-Ups is complete. Thank you George! While I didn't mind the game so much, it's always enjoyable watching you dissect the MGS games.

Yes you do. When you realise it's a generic, stale and hermetic art form. Just second place next to contemporary comic books. Not subversive or thought provoking. Just drivel.
