David Lynch broke those rules of camp too. Especially in Twin Peaks, where he pulled from pulp murder mystery, old film noir, bad soap operas, and added in his own touch of surrealism to create an experience that was awkward, funny, stupid, and at times, dark and serious as hell. Though I think Mulholland Drive was probably best at this overall, if not Lost Highway.

The truth of the matter is: Russia's climate used to be primarily tropical. After the end of World War 2 though, the country was split into 2; with the tropical areas being systematically eliminated by a highly secretive organization of supersoldiers known as CopperTodd. The remaining portion of Russia was then greatly expanded and revised manually by the same organization to resemble a tundra climate. Of course, you won't find any of this in the History books. The public, including Russian inhabitants, was left none the wiser about any of this. Kojima was one of the few ones left that knew the truth; and he tried to let everyone know by releasing this game. Unfortunately, after 10 years, the very same force that destroyed the original 'Mother' Russia became aware of his true intention by releasing this "game" and began plotting his removal from this dimension. They've already succeeded with the first move in their plan; removing him from Konami. Soon they plan to exile him from Japan; then Asia; and eventually from the entire planet. But that's not all: Kojima emanates a certain type of energy that sustains this planet; a detail they discovered about him after they already made their plan to remove him. Once he's outside of Earth's atmosphere, they plan on converting that same energy into a source used to power a weapon they've been secretly been constructing since before the removal of "Mother" Russia. Apparently this weapon has the capacity to cause unfathomable destruction. If this plan of theirs comes to fruition, I fear for the future of this planet. There's got to be someone capable of infiltrating the base of these supersoldiers and putting a stop to this plan of theirs before it's too late!

I just found out about the Spatsa this past month. It's a mushroom found in the deeply isolated courtyard of Graniny Gorki Lab, and it puts Snake to sleep, complete with the ZZZ effect, for an alarmingly long time when eaten. This restores life and stamina without a save/reload, but obviously leaves you completely vulnerable. In a bizarre Codec call, Paramedic bewilderingly and suspiciously seems to withhold this information from you until you've eaten it. It also replenishes your knockout handkerchief by creating an ammo box once you've eaten the mushroom. About that, while we're at it - if you grab a guard with the handkerchief equipped, you knock them out in the classic chloroform move without using any 'ammo'. I swear, there is something for EVERY long-time fan to find in this game.

@GamingintheAM08012 жыл бұрын
Something I just learned in a playthrough last year was that, if a guard notices another guard's body, he becomes "deaf" to all other noise around him as he goes to investigate. This means he'll no longer hear your footsteps and you're free to run up behind him without detection. This means placing dead or unconscious guards in another guard's patrol path actually has a strategic benefit. It's also crazy the amount of people who don't know that blowing up food or ammo storehouses will affect the enemies' stamina and firing rate. They'll be hungrier and easier to distract in the former case, or more hesitant to fire their gun in the latter. Or you can just throw a captured tarantula or poisonous snake at them to instantly take them out (and this won't even count on your final kill tally!).

Haaaah. I just finished the game at 6 in the morning and just had to come and see this. I've been waiting so long to finish it so I can experience what all the fuss is about, and then watch this to have the fuss explained. None of it is disappointing. Thanks, George and team. That fucking ending, though. Sexual politics aside, Snake's end is horrifically tragic. Of course, that tragedy is reinforced when the genders are considered, but even without them, it's a harrowing betrayal by everyone around him. He was a pawn to all, and all along he thought he was the most powerful of the lot. This game, as you mentioned, is incredibly clever. Much more clever than its predecessor. However, I still like Sons of Liberty better just because of how bold (and earnest) it is. Snake Eater woos and charms the player with all the camp and design then quietly leaves the stage with a great finale that respects the time that the player invested, and for that it IS a better game. However, while Sons of Liberty shouts and slaps the player for self-indulgence just before the end of the play, Snake Eater laughs about it at a bar after the show is over. Sons of Liberty's very end is actually much more friendly, and it tells the player that it's okay to be confused and that life can go on within the fleeting spirit of meaning that they find underlying it all. Snake Eater doesn't care about comforting the player. It outright tells you that your subsistence through all of its trials amount to nothing for your character but the feeling of loss. Even EVA's betrayal doesn't mean anything because that ALSO fails. In fact, the only winner is Ocelot, the kid who you spared, mocked, and thought your amiable rival by the end. The one enemy-friend you made is the biggest puppeteer, and even he didn't do it for liking you. He did it under orders. How humiliating is that? Kojima and team certainly upped themselves with this one, and I definitely think that the franchise and the medium as a whole are much richer for having this game. However, it's a pained and tortured game. It seems like it both likes and dislikes existing. On one end, it flaunts design and character like nothing else. On the other, it mourns the failed task its predecessor took part in. In the same way Big Boss feels lost and betrayed, this game does the same. Sure, it's the best that ever was, but only as a response to things that were outside of its control. It exists somewhere between Kojima's vision and the fans' demands, and it doesn't belong to either. It just jumps from one to the other like an overworked bartender. PS: The Patriot gun looks like a dick and a pair of balls. Boss shoots Snake with it, gives it to Snake when Snake defeats her, then Snake gives it up after he learns that he was just being played. If THAT is not symbolism, I don't know what is.

Adammyers1995 I agree his channel is extremely underrated. However, this is not a "master work of classical critical theory"... In fact, his video has very little to do with Classical critical theory at all except for the intro where he talks about things seeming campy when what is being portrayed doesn't fit with societies current norms or standards. The fact that you said that despite it having no relevance in so much that it is completely inaccurate makes it seem like you have absolutely no idea what Classical critical theory actually means.

Perfect explanation and analysis of every tiny detail from a game that has always stuck with me since its release, yet I've never been able to pinpoint all the things that personally made it feel so special. The fact that I'm searching for "MGS3 behind the scenes" videos in mid 2016, even tho I haven't played the game in years, proves that Kojima and crew had created something very special. It's a game that inspired me to become a game designer, and it'll always be one of my favorite games of all time. Well done on this in-depth analysis of a timeless classic!
@JZStudiosonline8 жыл бұрын
Which leads to MGS5 being a huge letdown for me, as well as probably many others. There was so much more detail in 3 that should've been included in 5 that just weren't. Maybe they thought that a magical ability to heal from gunshots and fragmentation in a few seconds would appeal to more players, but I really wanted the survival viewer back, with all it's detail on how to deal with cuts, scrapes, burns, poisons, even minor surgery. It made complete sense and I really wanted it included. They also really dropped the ball with the animals, especially with the fact that after playing through MGS5, there's less animal models than 3 had, and there's no concept of hunting or eating, even though you can be on the field for a week at a time. Playing through 5, I think the only small animals I ever saw were some rats and hedgehogs, no snakes, scorpions, spiders, turtles, or even the tsuchinoko, all things (except tortoises) that were available in 3, and more. I don't know if it came down to MGS5 was rushed because of Konami, and the gameplay that was there was fantastic, but so much was just missing. Least of all the story, that actually raised significantly more questions than it answered. It's even worse knowing that Kojima was fired, so we may never get an answer.
@TheMattmanPart18 жыл бұрын
I felt exactly the same. I loved playing MGS 5, but in a way it almost didn't feel like an MGS game because of all the small stuff that was missing. Like, I missed being able to just call up folks back at the base and seeing what their thoughts were on whatever situation Snake was currently in, or providing info with whatever weapon/tool he was holding, or even commenting on Snake's recent interactions with an enemy/boss. I was also a bit let down with the lack of the overly theatrical boss battles, which seemed to have become sort of a tradition in the series, and gave the game more character. Same goes for the lack of cutscenes as well. I know there were some gripes about the long cutscenes in MGS4, but the lack of cutscenes in 5 sort of left me wanting more in terms of story. And of course, not having Hayter voice Snake just seemed wrong, and I felt almost like it was playing as a different character or something. Actually, speaking of different character, Kojima totally could've had Hayter voice the "real" Snake in the twist ending, so that'd at least give a bit of an excuse to have both actors, but, nope. Like, I totally get it though. Assuming from the beginning of the project that this may very likely be his last MGS game, I'm sure Kojima wanted it to be perfect in every way, which would include hiring a much more well known/more experienced actor to voice Snake, hoping for a better performance overall, as well as lure in more players with a character voiced by an actor that they're familiar with. Maybe he should've just left the voice acting to Hayter for 5, and then went with hiring the bigger actors for the movies..(assuming they ever make MGS movies, but I doubt it)? I dunno. Anyway, yeah so 5 was a bit of a letdown for me as well, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it for what it was (as a game, but not as an MGS game), and probably even put in like, 70+ hours. It's just a shame about all the Kojima/Konami drama, along with the Hayter drama. Kinda seems like too many bridges have burned to continue on with the saga in any way.
@JZStudiosonline8 жыл бұрын
Matthew Apparently for the last couple MGS's Hayter and Kojima have butted heads. I guess Kojima just didn't like Hayter that much. MGS5 was definitely lacking on the details, and the tapes are okay, but actual cutscenes for at least the scenes you should be part of would've been much better. It really is a phantom pain, a game that never quite got to fruition. I'm still convinced the final release was only a third of what Kojima had planned.
@TheMattmanPart18 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that HAS to be the case.. I guess the whole cut mission with Liquid kinda proves it too, cuz why else would a developer leave out such a big part of a game if they had no other choice. Kind of bummed to hear about Kojima and Hayter not getting along or whatever. Hope he gets more voice acting gigs, or writing gigs, or whatever he's doing these days.
@JZStudiosonline8 жыл бұрын
Matthew I actually saw an interview with YongYea and Hayter on Yongs channel, it was pretty cool, and Hayter talked about his past gigs. Apparently he basically wrote the X-men movies. I know people were complaining about how the cut mission would still leave the game unfinished, and yeah, it would've. MGSV just introduces how Big Boss, Liquid, and Psycho managed to meet, but not how they actually got together, and I personally believe Kojima would've gone so far as to the original Metal Gear on the NES. Was hoping that would be the case and Hayter would be Solid, but that didn't happen. To me, MGSV will always be a remembrance ballad, of a series now gone, and a story unfinished, but still cherished the same.
@Oblico1Morale10 жыл бұрын
That's an extremely interesting and deep analysis! I like how you tear the game down so highlight little details of gameplay and narrative. Subscribed The game itself is brilliant. When that single tear came down in the final scene of the game i cried a whole freaking river. It builds the narrative through fun and campy elements to awake your inner child and right when a little kid inside you falls in love with the character it breaks him with terrifyingly deep and adult resolution. Love it

+Eagle 4 i think MGS4 is a close up of itself in a way, and in another it's deceptive. it's really not all it appears to be. hard to explain, but there's sort of a depth to it, you need t presume from the other MGS games to really appreciate. There's a lot of little details, it would look ridiculous if you were to say them out loud. like a conspiracy nut talking about real life LALILULELO but make sense when you have all the information. so yeah, that's sort of what MGS4 IS about, but can't tell you because you can't say patriot. mainly, everything was intentional. even MGSV being terribad.

Not to nitpick, but the whole 'using Raiden to appeal to girls' is cultural. Over in Japan there's this type of male character called Bishounen. These are essentially pretty boys with their prettiness taken up to 11, making them look feminine. An example of this character type would be Cloud Strife from FF7. It's even remarked in game how feminine he looks.

I’m still amazed at how well written these games are. (Especially MGS2.) Things like the Cobra unit representing emotions is obvious but a lot of people miss the reason for this. Snake kills these emotions over the course of the game leaving him empty: He kills his Pain. Then his Fear. He eliminates his end, placing him on path of war forever. He kills his anger/fury. He is then killed by his sorrow, only to go on. Then he kills his Joy.
