The Content
Academic essays consist of two writing styles: descriptive writing and critical writing.
Describes (gives an account of/gives details on) what something is: a topic, problem, situation, or context of the subject under discussion. It may describe where this takes place, who is involved when it occurs. Also, it provides background information to your discussion of the essay question. Background description usually comes before critical analysis so that the reader can understand the topic you are critically engaging with.
A good way to remember descriptive writing is, it provides information on what, who, where, when
Critical writing requires you to apply analysis and evaluation to the descriptions you have provided. Writers who can produce persuasive critical writing use evidence to support their ideas. Critical writing allows you to:
• Apply an idea or theory to a different situation. Does the idea work/not work in practice? Is there a factor that makes this work or not? (relating theory to practice). For example: 'Smith's (2008) theory on teamwork is effective in the workplace because it allows a diverse group of people with different skills to work effectively'.
• Justify why a process or policy exists
• Suggest an alternative approach to view and act on situations.
• Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of an idea/theory/policy. Why does this idea/theory/policy work? Or, why does this idea not work? For example: 'Although Smith's (2008) theory on teamwork is useful for large teams, there are challenges in applying this theory to teams who work remotely'
• Demonstrate how the idea links to other ideas in the field (synthesis). For example: 'the user experience of parks can be greatly enhanced by examining Donnelly's (2009) customer service model used in retail
• Demonstrate how the idea compare and contrast with other ideas/theories (comparison/classification of the type of theory)
• Demonstrate the “up-to-datedness” and relevance of an idea/theory/policy (currency). For example: 'although this approach was successful in supporting the local community, Smith's model does not accommodate the needs of a modern global economy'.
• Evaluate an idea/theory/policy by providing an evidence-informed judgment. For example: 'Therefore, May's delivery model should be discontinued as it has created significant issues for both customers and staff (Ransom, 2018)'.
• Create new perspectives or arguments based on knowledge. For example: 'to create strong and efficient buildings, we will look to the designs provided by nature. The designs of the Sydney Opera house are based on the segments of an orange (Cook, 2019)'.
To conclude, critical writing takes positive and negative approaches to ideas and interrogates them. Once you have interrogated an idea or theory, you can then provide an evidenced judgment
Example, have a look at the following paragraph:
According to research by the Food Standards Agency (2015), there may be a link between late nights and childhood obesity in children. However, this research focuses only on the area of sleep and does not consider many of the other factors associated with late nights, such as what children eat when they stay up late. Compared to other known factors influencing childhood obesity, there is insufficient evidence about the effect of late nights for this to be taken very seriously by policymakers, though this may change with further research.
This paragraph consists of three sentences: Descriptive statement, critical statement, and judgement
Descriptive statement (who, when, what): According to research by the Food Standards Agency published in 2015, there may be a link between late nights and childhood obesity in children
Critical statement: However, this research focuses only on the area of sleep and does not consider many of the other factors associated with late nights, such as what children eat when they stay up late
Judgment statement: Compared to other known factors influencing childhood obesity, there is insufficient evidence about the effect of late nights for this to be taken very seriously by policymakers, though this may change with further research.

I'm so grateful for your video!! I think you should get the salaries of the two professors who guided me towards failure twice through incorrect technique! "Say what's good and bad about the paper, things like sample size, information sources, and how they affect your confidence", nothing to do with critical and judgment statements! I've had an epiphany thanks to you! Liked and followed!

@@TalentandSkillsHuB yes .My main trouble is I always don't know how to start an essay with a strong catchy sentence and keeping it's flow.i spend a lot of good time in thinking about the beginning .

@@vijaymurali7154 the simplest way to write an essay introduction is to provide argument(s) or statement(s) that relate to the title of the essay, after which you will explain the purpose of the essay. Depending on your writing skills some start with explaining the purpose of the essay and then put some arguments or statements to establish the discussion. Have a look at this example: "“Strategy is a multi-complex practice with theories of how organisation would excel in achieving high level of performance in the markets and the industry the organisation is operating in (Barney, 2011). However, strategy is a tenuous subject to grasp due to different meaning it holds to different people (Mintzberg et al, 1998). Moreover, as a management and a dynamic process that needs to take into account time lags, intervening variables and casualty (Choo & Bontis, 2002), strategy is made up of a sequential set of analyses and choices for the purpose of increasing the likelihood of a firm to perform well (Barney, 2011), and thus should not be a surprise if it attracts the attention of researchers and scholars in the demand for increased and suitable way to combat the economic and market battlefield, which is the essence of the new streams of research. This essay will critically evaluate through the various literature the recent developments in the study of strategy in the nature of new streams of research and with relevant business examples to reconcile them with the ten schools of thought promoted by Mintzberg et al (1998) in the context of recent organisational reality”.

@@vijaymurali7154 Writing Essay Introduction The introduction should be designed to attract the reader's attention and give her an idea of the essay's focus. Begin with an attention grabber. The attention grabber you use is up to you, but here are some ideas: Startling information: This information must be true and verifiable, and it doesn't need to be totally new to your readers. It could simply be a pertinent fact that explicitly illustrates the point you wish to make. If you use a piece of startling information, follow it with a sentence or two of elaboration. Anecdote: An anecdote is a story that illustrates a point. Be sure your anecdote is short, to the point, and relevant to your topic. This can be a very effective opener for your essay, but use it carefully. Dialogue: An appropriate dialogue does not have to identify the speakers, but the reader must understand the point you are trying to convey. Use only two or three exchanges between speakers to make your point. Follow dialogue with a sentence or two of elaboration. Summary Information: A few sentences explaining your topic in general terms can lead the reader gently to your thesis. Each sentence should become gradually more specific, until you reach your thesis. If the attention grabber was only a sentence or two, add one or two more sentences that will lead the reader from your opening to your thesis statement. Finish the paragraph with your thesis statement.
