This straight up makes me wanna cry. Just...Caduceus being so pragmatic, acknowledging that he's almost objectively correct, but still hearing that hurt in Veth's voice... Her husband was a prisoner to both sides of this conflict at different points. Her son was practically an orphan for about a month because of this conflict. But dammit Cad is right. For every Veth that gets justice, there are ten Calebs made in the process. Gutwrenching

I absolutely love Yasha in this as well, her quiet contemplation was a really cool thing to add that you honestly didn't have to add. Also, I just love the eyes of all the characters and how they stand out in color just still meld well with the color scheme. I'm looking forward to more animations both of CR and otherwise! Just want to add my meaningless 2 cents to everyone saying Cad is wise. I definitely agree there's a wisdom there, specifically in contrast to Veth who desires something closer to revenge than justice. But Cad is looking at this from a ground level. He's right that from an emotional perspective "justice" isn't going to be the thing that heals (and yes, this scene does name me cry, espcially when he says "that will make the dead feel better" Damn.). If this were a personal offense it would be more applicable. However, they are discussing war criminals and the governments that allowed thousands to die. Justice in these cases is important because it helps prevent these things from happening again. It sets a prescedent for consequences and then can be recorded so that future generations know the atrocities that occurred and the consequences that those in the wrong suffered. Great scene btw, your art is gorgeous and interesting and you brought a gravity to the conversation that was remarkable
@snaildrop
@snaildrop 3 жыл бұрын
Oh, I do definitely agree with you that something should be done about the corruption in the higher levels of control in the Empire! But they do need a plan that doesn't have a high chance of just blowing up in their faces, because that would have terrible far-reaching consequences. There's more to this conversation that I couldn't include due to time/energy (maybe one day i'll do a part 2), but Cad steps back a bit once he guides Caleb toward a better motivation and focus for their future course of action than simply revenge. They'll still need to discuss this more, i think... but this scene always stuck in my head as really important, and super interesting... Thanks for your insight and your comment!! :')

I think cad is definitely the type of person who would want to stop people from committing harm but less in a way of “if you do something wrong you will be punished severely! And let that be an example!” If that makes sense. He strikes me as someone who wants people to be reformed, and if they can’t be reformed, like if they insist on continuously doing bad things, I honestly Cad is more likely to just kill them than punish them. I think punishment to him is pointless.
@maxttozer5037
@maxttozer5037 3 жыл бұрын
I agree largely with your points, but think the distinction is that Cad couldn't see a way to hold them accountable without restarting the war, and if the options are start a war to hold them accountable, or have them not be held accountable but start a war later, I think Cad would say there needs to be a new plan. It sort of reminds me of the French revolution. What the French monarchy was doing was terrible, corrupt, and they had to be brought to justice. But, the French revolution against them was just a violent monstrously violent war that had horrifying impacts on the people making the revolution, and the overall population of France was seriously affected, it was probably the bloodiest revolution in history. And even after the revolution was over, what good did the Justice bring? It brought Napoleon. And then the French people were right back where they started under another abusive and corrupt power who would abuse their strength and start more wars, and all the people had to show for holding the monarchy morally accountable were scars, gravestones, and poverty. I think that's what Cad meant when he stressed that they're smarter than him, and he'd agree with them if they found a solution. the only thing Cad could see holding them accountable resulting in was a French Revolution scenario, pain for pain that would punish a few people but not fix the system, and he refused to be directly responsible for the deaths of thousands. But. This is a biiiiiig ethical dilemma, with strong arguments on both sides, and I'm never unimpressed by the nuance and philosophy that can be discussed by these games.

@@maxttozer5037 No. The French Revolution needed to happen. If nothing else, it led to the people given more power in monarchic countries in order to prevent such a revolution on their turf. And Napoleon brought the Napoleonic code, which was very influential in crafting other civil codes across Europe. So in the long term, conflict can be a positive. To turn away from justice because conflict MIGHT occur? That's absurd, and borderline cowardly.

What I love about Taliesin here, and the CR cast in general, is that he is staying true to the character of Caduceus even though the character is wrong. Cad thinks that justice and vengeance are the same thing and that it can only bring chaos but that is because he grew up in a graveyard in a forest, outside of the bounds of civilization or society. We clearly see, throughout the campaign, that he has a distaste for the complicated legal structures and bloated political frameworks as he sees them as chaotic systems that don't exist in nature. To Caduceus, what is natural is orderly and good and what is unnatural is chaotic and bad. Basically Caduceus is too much of a tea drinking, incense burning hermit to grasp the notion that, in societies, you need a system of state regulated vengeance (justice) in order to prevent individuals from seeking their own vengeance out; that the very thing he views as creating chaos is actually designed to prevent it. Veth begins the clip describing utilizing the information they have to influence the tools of the state towards punishing the Cerberus Assembly (and Co.) and Caduceus immediately states his unwillingness to participate in eye-for-an-eye, vigilante vengeance; Cad even admits that he doesn't see a difference between vengeance, justice and punishment. He is also incorrect about only finding closure if everyone is in the ground but this makes sense for Cad because he works in a graveyard; only interacting with the peaceful dead and the people who are still in the grieving process and haven't even begun the journey to find closure. Caduceus has a lot of wisdom to share, but he is not infallible nor unbiased by his upbringing and religious views and Taliesin portrays that perfectly here. Caduceus is correct that "vengeance" often causes more suffering but he is incorrect that "Justice" and "Vengeance" are the same thing and because of this he is unable to see a scenario where the Assembly is punished for their crimes that doesn't cause the war to break out or someone worse to take their place. The final evidence for Caduceus being wrong is the path the Beau and Caleb take at the end of the campaign; working with the Cobalt Soul to dismantle the Assembly and punish them for their crimes....... sounds like Justice to me.
@kateorgera5907
@kateorgera5907 4 ай бұрын
Well also the way Trent attacks Caduceus's home in the finale. It's real easy to talk about "closure only comes when everyone is in the ground" when it's not your home that got attacked. But by the same token, I am reminded of the Treaty of Versailles. What was meant to be an act that brought the losing Germans to justice after World War I really comes across as more of an act of vengeance as time goes on, as we see how the impoverished state of Germany caused by the Treaty lead to the rise of Hitler and the Third Reich less than 20 years later. So Cad has a very strong point that attempting to bring justice can cause more harm than good if not carefully considered, especially poignant considering the parallels between the Empire and Germany in this campaign. What Beau and Caleb do is carefully considered, it targets only the guilty and seems to minimize damage to the Empire's citizens, and does a ton of info gathering before making decisions. it's not just punishment for punishment's sake.

One of the best Cad scenes there is. Tal has such a good grasp of his character and this is a great nod that in Cad's time he's probably had to bury a lot of people who died in pointless feuds. Contrast his wider, more objective perspective with Beau and Veth's more immediate investment in the here and and now and it's just a beautiful illustration of how we can know violence is sell perpetuating but still give into it's lure. And it's helped by your beautifully subtle posing and composition.

I also love the phrase Cad says later: no more children on the pire is a good goal. And agrees to stand by it instead of vengeance

Amazingly done! I love how you captured Caleb's inner struggle. Not to mention the side glance with Beau and Caleb, knowing what the other is thinking. Amazing!

I’ve always loved Cad the most in moments like this. Yes he’s kind of a goofball but there’s a resounding wisdom to him that shines in the roughest times. Beau might be the party monk but Caduceus is the most philosophical by far, and has the most to teach the M9 about life as it is.

There have been many moments between marisha and taliesin over the years where it seems like marishas character has the moral highground and then tals character rebutts with a corker one line. God they're both amazing. Another moment like this that I think about a lot is in c1 when percy is carving VMs story under westrun and keyleth disapproves of immortalising their deeds, but Percy points out that that is the only way humans can live as long as elves etc.
