Leveling is so weird in world for DnD. NPC's can spend thier entire lives adventuring and only ever hit level 5. While PC's can get from 1 to 20 in a year of their campaign.
@3rdDayfan7773 жыл бұрын
@@emmarod8746 I think it comes down to luck. I don't mean the dice, I mean some characters are destined for greatness. Just take ability scores. Most people have 10s. There's the gifted people who become NPCs of prominence. And then, there's the PCs, the heroes of legend. Or at the very least, heroes of their own stories. The reason why it seems skewed for the PCs is because we don't play the boring people. We play those 1 in 1000 people who are a cut above the rest, destined for greatness. Or, you know, the ones destined to die to a critical hit from a kobold at level 1 and expire on the cave floor. But then we find another hero the next session.
@haku81353 жыл бұрын
@@3rdDayfan777 MOST adventurers spend their entire lives doing things like, fighting goblins and defending caravans from bandits. Maybe they'll have a VERY exciting story where they ran into a TROLL and fought a fierce battle, slaying the monster. PC adventurers get thrown into WORLD ENDING SHIT. The difference in experience is just VAST. They just keep chasing that higher level enemy, you know speaking metaphorically but also entirely literally. If you look at how much XP a regular goblin is worth, they give out 50 XP a piece, and they have 7 hp. Enough of them at low levels can be a challenge, but even after just 3 or 4 levels they're practically a joke unless you face an entire horde of the things. If you don't move on to fighting bigger and stronger enemies, your experience is just going to plateau and for all practical purposes, you just STOP leveling. Over like DECADES of fighting goblins and bandits and other common enemies, maybe you'll get to level 7 or so if you're dedicated and working basically all the time. There aren't enemies around every corner though, there will be stretches of time where just, nothing happens. It even says in the DM Guide, levels 1-4 are local heroes, basically your standard for adventurers. If you don't get past that local level, traveling the lands and searching out calamities that effect more than a town, you just can't get the experience you need to push yourself past those low levels.

Oct 12, 2021 on Twitter: Me, to Matt: There’s something I’d been hoping to know more about but wasn’t addressed in the C2 Wrap-Up: Zeenoth’s corruption and Thoreau’s deal with him. Specifically, did Clara know what was really going on, or did he hide that from her? And how deep did the corruption go? Because I want to believe that he kept her in the dark, knowing she’d object to it but wanted to keep her under his thumb. And also that she was just as much a victim as her daughter, and that hopefully following the trial, he comes home to an empty house, as she and TJ left him. Matt's response: Clara was not aware of the depths it went, but she did not follow on her suspicions either. Even so, its is a complicated dynamic within the family. I imagine Thoreau’s toxic behaviors are very specific in their timing & targets, and otherwise appears a wonderful husband/father. In my mind, those revelations shook up the dynamic and allowed Clara the strength and impetus to take TJ and leave. She isn’t without her feeling of guilt for not seeing things as they were/believing him entirely, but she is trying to begin anew and make amends. ---------- So yeah, even Clara and TJ get a happy ending. And it's my belief that Clara reconnects with Beau and they start over as a family with Yasha And TJ.

Really appreciate Matt near the end reminding everyone in the audience, especially us DMs, that he's human. Not every ruin is fleshed out. Not every room in the happy fun ball has full lore, mechanics and architecture written down and ready to go. It's ok to have fun in the moment sometimes and it's ok to wait until players confirm an interest in something to deepen and/or really create it. We want the illusion of an entire world in our brains, we don't need to actually laboriously make something that our players will only explore 0.42% of.
@B3RyL3 жыл бұрын
It's part of the fun for the DM too. When you're just reading the script it feels a bit like you're babysitting. But when you read the room and see what tickles your players and react to it by fleshing out the bits that matter to them in a way that makes it fun for everyone, that's what makes it exciting and fulfilling. Give and receive and go with the flow kind of situation. It's almost like you're having sex using your minds.

It's the truth and it's hard but important to remember. Sometimes you have to think of it like a videogame world that only gets fully rendered in the direction that the player is currently looking to save on memory space. Or like when there's a map with fog of war on - you flesh out the bits where they go, and then wherever they've been stays fleshed out, but you don't need to know every single thing under that fog.

Even the divine intervention wound up just a reroll of the raise dead that CALEB cast. And then they get Kingsley, instead of Molly. Because; "it doesn't matter who you were, it matters who you are now." And using a Transmuter's stone to ressurect someone is going to mean there are changes of some kind, right? It all sort of fits in a very poetic way, and it's because Molly helped Caleb make that first step toward forgiving himself.

I bet that if the story had progressed that way, then either Lucien would have taken his body back and forced Molly into a different one, or Lucien would have possessed Vess Derogna.

Pipe dream ideas for one shots: - Agents of the Cobalt Soul and the Augen Trust trying to take down a prominent member of the Cerberus Assembly (probably the Martinet Ludinus), likely all perishing in the process - The unfortunate misventures of those recurring band of bandits the M9 kept coming across - a hypothetical, all out Archmage brawl between all the major arcanists that were mentioned throughout the campaign, but never got to fully strut their stuff, like Halas, Yussa, possibly the Bright Queen herself, and maybe a couple more... (if only for the satisfaction of maybe actually killing Ickythong, if he's in the mix...) - that "Bird's of Prey"-esque team up of all the people trying to get revenge on Jester, including (but not limited to) the Hag, the dildo-hand-lady, one or more dragon turtles, and doubly undead Avantica... which would neatly roll it all into that already anticipated Darktow adventure...

There was a moment for Jester in the Folding Halls that I thought was so powerful and had such potential and gave some incredible insight to Jester. When they were all escaping from the dragon and Jester was the last one and she broke down a bit because she was left all alone. It just made me see the cheerful, bubbly exterior as a shell for a lonely child that had basically grown up alone. I'd gotten the serious impression that she didn't get out a lot growing up, didn't have a lot of friends, and just desperately wanted to be liked and in that moment the shell cracked and you saw a little of the inside. Obviously they ended up going a different direction and it really was never brought up, but could have been an interesting thread to tug and explore.

She did say basically that. She mostly lived in her room and would escape but was picked on. The Traveler was the only one that befriended her and sort of ended the loneliness. yeah i really picked up on that in early -mid campaign and connected a lot with her character because I was a lot like her especially when I was younger from a similar backstory. would've been interesting to hear more and go into her processing that because between that and genuine healing comes a time when you have to learn to be vulnerable and break that we didn't really see much but also not everyone want to RP that shit and sometimes it's a game and you wanna have a fun upbeat time which i totally respect.

I'd like it more if they'd realized how much more effective Yasha is at tanking Beau's physical damage and resisting her stuns (Con save) than resisting Caleb's Polymorph or Slow (Wis save). Also Sentinel to shut down Beau's mobility. They said they were going to have Yasha go after Caleb, which sounds crazy to me, unless they were just going to have the clerics (try to) Banish Beau until Caleb was subdued or otherwise dealt with. (Banish is a Cha save, unlike Polymorph or Hold Person). But yeah it's still pretty cool; I loved Matt's reaction to knowing that had been a thing, as well as Marisha's. 3:24:50
@shanedsouza1892 жыл бұрын
@@Peter_Cordes well, the issue is that Caleb is a powerhouse regardless. You send Yasha after Caleb so that she can drop him in 2 turns with divine fury and wings, while tanking beau. Fjord only needs to counterspell once to neuter Caleb, and Yasha deals 100+ damage over 2 turns.
@Peter_Cordes2 жыл бұрын
@@shanedsouza189 Activating her wings takes her Action; only worth doing at the start of a long fight, or on a turn where she doesn't have enough movement to get to melee range. Other than that, yeah fair point about raw damage to burn down Caleb's HP quickly. If Beau and Caleb aren't next to each other, though, she'd still want to end her turn next to Beau for Sentinel op attacks. (Step of the Wind for disengage wouldn't prevent that.) But attacking Caleb then running to Beau might mean giving Caleb a chance to cast at her with War Caster, potentially with Polymorph into a tortoise (to frighten Fjord :P) or a whale, although a whale can still bite. (Something with lots of HP couldn't be broken by incidental AoE, so would cost a dispel from Jester.) Fjord with Banishing Smite + Divine Smite could put the hurt on Caleb pretty seriously, if either attack hit his AC20 with Shield. The Banish happens automatically if the target has less than 50 HP after the attack, no save. Then Fjord would be a target for Beau while holding concentration on the banish. And it would use up 2 of his warlock spell slots. At Warlock 11, he has 3 total that are usable for Counterspell, but before that only 2 5th-level slots, the rest only being 1st-level paladin slots. And if they weren't at full strength when Beau+Caleb turned... Yeah might take some Yasha damage to get Caleb's HP down into range for Banishing Smite's 5d10 + weapon damage to bring it below 50 without a divine smite, without Cad's Path to the Grave. (I don't think they ever lined up a Path to the Grave combo with a full Banishing Smite + Divine Smite + hexblade's curse, even in the final battle. If that ever crit, it could insta-kill Caleb from full to negative 99 HP.)

I imagine the players would have killed them if they had to because thats just how the game is played. Given how much weight Ashley put into the guilt of having nearly killed Beau once while being mindcrontrolled and all the other guilt and shame her character had burdened herself with. Hurting Beau, or even just allowing Beau to be harmed probably would have just absolutely ruined Yasha given her history. Like full on Caleb style mental break.

I don't think Caleb would want to be an archmage. Unless that's like, a teaching position, like "senior archmage of transmutation, Caleb Widowgast" and it really just means he's the best in that field and is like the top tier teacher. Caleb wants to clean up the Assembly, but he really doesn't want to JOIN it, he doesn't want to have that kind of authority. He had the chance to take Trent's seat and refused it, so I don't think he'd ever pursue that. He just wants to teach the young ones how to turn into moths and eat curtains. We could absolutely get a character who was taught BY Caleb though, that'd be interesting.
@EthanKWaters3 жыл бұрын
@@haku8135 To be fair, you don't need to be in the Assembly to be considered an archmage - Yussa isn't, yet he's still considered one, same with other characters from Campaign 1. The Assembly just codified it into a term of station. Given Caleb ended the campaign one level from being having access to 9th-level spells, he's practically an archmage already (funnily enough, he also basically has the ability scores of the archmage statblock, too). He might even be more powerful than some of the Assembly Archmages, too - Delilah Briarwood was Archmage of Antiquity despite only having access to, at most, 8th-level spells at that point in her life, so they might not all necessarily be at the pinnacle of wizardly power.
@haku81353 жыл бұрын
@@EthanKWaters All of that is true, but I'm more referring to some OFFICIAL position, or any position of power rather than just a mostly meaningless title. Not MEANINGLESS really, but like, general. Like a "title" just because he's good at magic. That isn't really a matter of accepting or not. I'm referring to a more tangible POSITION of Archmage. Something governmental or even just limited to the school, again unless they just made him the official top of the transmutation teachers. Caleb is very much one to avoid big names and renown. He just doesn't want the fame or authority. I think he would at least consider joining Allura's group though. The mages of course, not the Tal Dorei council.
@EthanKWaters3 жыл бұрын
@@haku8135 Again, the only place archmage is considered a title of office is within the Assembly/Empire - outside of them, it means a very powerful spellcaster typically capable of casting the most powerful spells known, a description which fits Caleb. The title usually also comes with a heavily implied warning of "do not fuck with this person". This is the commonly held understanding of what an archmage is, and what I'm pretty certain the original commenter was saying. The fact that Caleb can be called one without him getting free dental or a discount at the Invulnerable Vagrant changes nothing - by right of personal power and right of conquest, he is an archmage.

@dancool7083 жыл бұрын
@@dedf15 I think for Caleb it wasn't about whether or not the plan would've worked. 20 intelligence will give you a LOT of wiggle room to make that happen, the problem was that Caleb was holding onto a past that was very long ago, and trying to revert the sins he committed would do nothing but put a band-aid on a gashing wound. It was about the principle that no one should wield that power, especially for his own minimal gains. Its the same reason why Essek refused to do it, he knows that the magic behind it will eventually hurt more people than it saves and that the original sins he committed wont just go away afterwards, he'll still have to carry the burden of that initial decision, going back in time will just ensure that they'd never be able to forgive themselves for what they did.
@הדרהלוי-ב1ה3 жыл бұрын
@@dedf15 I think that the idea is that you can't play god. You can't have this "fix everything wrong that ever happened" tool at your disposal, without growing extremely arrogant, corrupt, and detached. I could do anything I want. Doean't work out? Go back again and do it differently. Go kill a child to see how that'd feel, and undo it the next day. Your relationship with anyone becomes less significant. You can always refriend them, or change it up. I think that was Caleb accepting his humanity. Accepting that he can't fix everything, that he doesn't - and shouldn't - have control. This is the man who rejected a role in the assembly in order to teach transmutation. This is the man who realized he'll die of old age, and can't be with Essek. He could've pursued immortality - he's high level enough to cast clone, and will grow even more powerful as time went on. This campaign explored wizardry very deeply. Its most defining chacteristic is the endless pursuit of power, whether for good or for evil, and how it makes you a radically different being than the rest of the people around you. A god among men, whether good or evil. That disintegrate spell was Caleb saying no.

@@dedf15 He explained in this wrap up some practical reasoning: Trent could have had someone speak with dead with the corpses and find out it wasn't Caleb's real parents, or something else that Caleb couldn't account for, and if anything like that went wrong, it could really fuck things up, and he just wasn't willing to take that risk.
@dude599743 жыл бұрын
4:02:50 So, funny thought I've seen floating around. Trent probably had the Clone spell set up for himself. Which is why he was goading Caleb into killing him. Because that would prove his manipulation worked, and also he'd survive. So the fact that he's rotting away in some hole for the rest of his days is PURE JUSTICE.
@sorchamaclabhrain19703 жыл бұрын
My theory is that Caleb or Astrid killing him would allow him to try and possess their body. It would a) allow him immediate revenge against an enemy and let him eliminate the threat, b) grant him extra lifespan, c) allow him to "succeed" himself into the Archmage seat on the Assembly. It makes sense that either possession or clones was his back-up plan, and why he kept trying to goad Caleb into killing him. And I 100% agree that him rotting in a dungeon and dying of natural causes, in disgrace and humiliation, is a very satisfying and fitting end instead.
@dude599743 жыл бұрын
@@sorchamaclabhrain1970 To clarify, if Trent dies of old age in a cell. He'll still then resurrect from the Clone spell (if he did have it set up). The justice is that, instead of it being immediate, it'd take however many years/decades for Trent to die. So he's just stuck there, waiting.

I’ve adored Marisha for a long time now, absolutely fucking detested Beau at the start of the campaign, but that was because she was playing a petulant brat with her head so far up her own ass in her own views of authority and being instantly aggressive that it was almost unbearable to watch her make delicate conversations worse in virtually every situation by trying to lie about stuff that didn’t need to be lied about. Then she hit her stride with Darktow, embracing more of her -actual- authority and what she COULD do when she just leaned heavily into her own strengths more, and Beau, while still completely insufferable at times with the ‘but what if-dig at npc that immediately puts them on guard and cuts off the path forward’ became someone I was actually wanting to see play out as she grew into her role in the Jedi-Adjacent Cobalt Soul. @@nerevarwolfeye4800 To be fair, her views on authority were warped and twisted without realizing it. Because of Zeenoth and Thoreau’s collaboration. She ended up assuming that the system doesn’t care, can easily be bought, and cruelty is to be expected. Also, her father was horrendous to her, making her live in a loveless house, a gilded cage. So she just embraced the idea that if everyone’s going to be cruel anyway, may as well encourage it. Easier to keep others at arm’s length so that she doesn’t end up a victim. And then she realized the truth. And from there, she truly came into her own. Taking all that into account, it really becomes so much harsher in hindsight seeing her early moments, knowing that she was screwed over and betrayed over and over and never really given guidance and acceptance. But now she can take the kindness and wisdom she’s gained and pay it forward, ensuring that no one else ends up like her or Caleb. No more children on the pyre. And she actually became more comfortable and encouraged to show her true brilliance as an intelligent and inquisitive woman. Her deductions and notes truly helped the Nein in so many ways. This whole year that she spent with the Nein was essentially a reconstruction into whom she was always meant to be.

No one asked what Asrid was thinking when Beau followed her and watched her cry in an alley?
@DKOILive3 жыл бұрын
I think that was in a sense answered. She was broken and torn between hatred to Trent, past feelings to Bren and her ambitions, whatever they are (I don't think that Matt would have answered what they actually were). At some point Matt mentioned she was an opportunist, and she was following the current despite a deep despise. She had a stoic front, but behind it was a chasm of suffering.
