By the time I started watching Critical Roll I had already been a DM for 25 years. I've had numerous games under my belt from various systems, some were great, some not so great, some memorable until the day I die. And I thought I pretty much knew all there was about being a DM. But watching Matt made me realize that there was still more I could do, more ways that I could step up my DM'ing game (so to speak) and bring my DM'ing to the next level (heh, another pun). Matt and the whole Critical Roll team has help me break out of a shell I didn't even know was there and I feel like all aspects of my DM'ing have improved, especially things like doing voices, facial expressions and body movements, things that I wasn't afraid to do before, but since watching that I've embraced in a massive bear hug and don't plan on letting go. Thank you so much Matt Mercer.

Inspired by this interview, I've let the wizard in my game's party discover a new spell during tonight's session.... Mercer's Mourning 1st-level enchantment Casting Time: 1 action Range: 30 feet Components: V, S, M (A feather of a Grey Owl that is waved in the air) Duration: 1 minute A creature of your choice that you can see within range is overcome with grief and falls into a weeping fit if this spell affects it. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or fall prone, becoming incapacitated and unable to stand up for the duration. A creature with an Intelligence score of 4 or less isn’t affected. At the end of each of its turns, and each time it takes damage, the target can make another Wisdom saving throw. On a success, the spell ends.

A 2021 Fellow Critter Edit: I don't know why, but I came back to watch this interview a second time. As I did, and Matt was talking about the ending of Campaign 1, and how it was ending, this quote came to me, and I find it fitting: "But even to these, the most magical of nights like these, the most wonderful of stories, even to fairytales, everything... comes to an end. But...if you've had a good story, let's just add one more good memory, and make a final ride together. I never had anything really going for me in the way of imagination (Ironic considering my YT handle, I know :P), I always liked my books and boardgames growing up, but in my area I always felt so secluded. No one enjoyed what I did, so I had to switch from reading books to playing sports and drinking with friends just to feel normal. It was 'weird' to go home and read a book for guys my age in my area, so I conformed, and let that part of my die away. My childhood books grew dusty, I never got to discuss my favourite LOTR character with a friend, and my appreciation for storytelling died away as life, and all of its challenges made itself known to me. I always felt like I was neglecting a part of me, and then I found Critical Role; playing dungeons and dragons, a game I had never heard of... Heh, I can't tell you how happy I am to have found you guys, the entire cast revived that imaginative part of me that I thought was long dead and buried. I could tear down the moon and pluck out the stars from their perches in my efforts to convey my appreciation, but instead, I'll settle for just a few words that will hopefully be enough. Thank you, all of you. You gave me an experience I never though I'd get to share in, and I'll take that with me when I get shipped off to the Commando unit. Who the fuck needs Superman as your hero when you have Matthew Mercer, and Vox Machina.

I can completely relate to this. I tell people often now about how I felt I had to be this kind of "closet nerd/geek" in high school back in the early 90's. There was still this stigma to pen and paper RPG's back then, and I filled out alot more from football and weight lifting, and suddenly started receiving alot more attention from girls. I did enjoy having a social life, but often I would have rather been around a table over at my other friends houses playing some CP 2020 or D&D. Man how times and the mainstreaming of geek culture has changed.

I held it together until he said, "I just want to make the world a better place." Love you, Matt. You are the best human. I look up to you and see so much of myself in you and feel so much less alone knowing that you are out there, making the world a better place.

I think Tarryon Darrington was a great exploration both for the players reacting to a new character but also the audience reacting to the new character. Looking at the one shots and alternate shows like Maze Arcana is a great way to prepare for the players to be presented as something new. Personally I love all the players and I know the characters they bring to the table are going to be amazing.

"An ending as beautiful as the journey it took to get there" -Liam It's surreal to really remember that journey the ups and downs as if you were actually there and still feel an emotion to it..to anyone looking in it would be strange. I remember showing a friend some of the saddest moments and she was like "omg...they're actually crying...they're just playing a board game" and then she looks to me and I'm tearing up too XD

It's been an amazing run, Matt. Thank you, and Vox Machina, so much for everything. It's sad to say goodbye to characters we love, but they'll live on, and I'm confident that we'll love the new guys as well. I can't wait to see what the new campaign will bring. Thank you for your astounding storytelling and worldbuilding and all the hard work that goes into this. Thank you for caring about us and being such an inspiration for me as a storyteller and an aspiring DM and avid roleplayer. I've learned so much from you and all of Critical Role. We love you. Thank you.

I really hope at the end of the day, that Laura switches places with Travis as the dumb barbarian character in the party. She can pull it off based off of that LOTR one shot!
@Rathkryn7 жыл бұрын
I did think it was funny the way Travis was giving her the same looks she gave him when Grogg did something stupid.
@longjohnstpj7 жыл бұрын
I see where you're coming from, but I feel you can turn that argument on it's head. There are so many good RPing moments where Grog made us laugh because of his lack of intelligence, in situations where a smart character wouldn't have produced the same reaction. He pulled the character off so well.

@SarahAndreaRoycesChannel7 жыл бұрын
Grog had some great moments. "Fix him" was one of them. Learning to read with Pike was great, the time he punched a giant. But it was also sometimes painful to watch Travis desperately trying to keep his mouth shut. He may share some traits with Grog, but being dumb really isn't one of it.

Matt's description on if Vox Machina lost made me really want to see the next campaign take place in that reality. sounds like it'd be Fantasy X-Com.

Watching this, having not seen/heard any of campaign 1, but working on campaign 2 (about episode 9-10) and knowing some of the events later in the campaign, it's very much a different view (especially his comment about no one liking Taliesin's new character, as Molly was the reason why I jumped into campaign 2). I love seeing what Matt has to say about it and I think he has a lot of interesting stuff to say. The characters that I didn't like at the beginning of campaign 2 have been the ones that have grown on me the most and really, this community is awesome.
