The Friction Zone point is so very important. When I had a smaller bike it wasn't that big a deal, but now that i have a bigger bike it makes a huge difference in stopping smoothly.

Hi Joe. I would add that people need to make sure that their front wheel is straight when coming to a stop. Have the handlebars turned left or right is a sure-fire way to dump the bike.

One more you should add and it's one that I think is the most important is to simply start braking sooner. Too many riders wait too long to start braking when coming to a stop. Don't try to deal with all that rolling weight at the last second. A long slow stop is always smooth.
@JoeGoeMotorcycleAdventures

Valid point! In addition, if you start braking earlier, the car behind you has more warning. Great tip.

Great video, thank you. I noticed you doing this anyway, but you didn’t mention in commentary that your left foot should go down just as the bike stops. Throwing your left foot out too early tends to push your body to the opposite side, thereby destabilising the bike and making a smooth stop in a straight line more difficult. I get a real kick at a red light out of smoothly coming to a complete stop on my rear brake and then gently placing my left foot down with the bike dead straight upright. Especially beside a biker who has manhandled his or her bike to a stop with both brakes, and has wobbled to a stop with both feet down and handlebars askew!
@JoeGoeMotorcycleAdventures

i sometimes lose concentration and use too much front brake especially when tired after a day out, or put both feet down (i see a lot of this from others as well) but like anything you have to work on it, & coming to a smooth effortless stop always feels great, and IMHO it's about ingraining it into the psyche. thanks for the tips

You’re exactly right. It took me about a week to force myself to use the rear brake and put one foot down. I had to continually think about what I was doing. But, now it’s second nature and it’s amazing how much smoother my stops are. Appreciate you watching!

I use the front and back, but use the front mainly as I am stopping and use both feet. Yes, I can keep the bike up with one foot, however, when I have myself and a passenger, I use both feet as I come to a stop. Been doing it that way for 30+ years
@JoeGoeMotorcycleAdventures
@JoeGoeMotorcycleAdventures 5 ай бұрын
I will put both feet down occasionally when I have my wife on the back, but I'll do it after I'm completely stopped. The main thing is that you need to make sure your bars are completely straight if you're using the front brake at slow speeds. If your bars are turned and hit that front brake, you will more than likely fall over. Appreciate you watching and leaving your feedback!

@@JoeGoeMotorcycleAdventures both MSF and Total Control teach this beyond basic class.. Also you should push weight back or straighten arms to prevent doing a stoppie. Look up Lee Parks Total Control or MotoJitsu probably has it in one of his videos he was a Total Control Instructor for all levels. Not in basic because they typically don't have the muscle control and coordination yet. Just like other things like trail braking. Slow speed maneuvers knee down etc.

Tbh, as someone who rides naked and sport bikes my preferred technique is to just use both brakes coming to a stop and just turn the handlebars a millimeter amounts to the right. That way the bike falls to the left, right on my left foot. Extremely useful for me because I cant flat foot both my feet so I want it to fall on the side Ima put my foot down.
@JoeGoeMotorcycleAdventures
@JoeGoeMotorcycleAdventures Ай бұрын
I get what you’re saying, but it’s still not a good idea to turn your bars or use the front brake at slow speeds. If you end up in a situation where you need to stop suddenly, you’re going to resort to your habit (using the front brake) and most likely fall over.
