itsmegp46 yeah, we did not have the most modern technology then, as we do today, 35 years ago, flying for allegheny, most all instrumentation was analog and not digital, and radar screen was green, with black background, heck, atari video games had better graphics back then,lol.

think about how much worse this incident could have gone though? The pilots in this situation were obviously highly experienced and able to get the plane down relativity safely. An inexperienced pilot would probably panic and do something stupid like overcompensate on the pitch correction.

@Kimmy Middleton Only the early DC-10's had technical issues, mostly in the seventies when the aircraft got it's bad reputation. Ever since those technical issues were solved its safety has been exemplary resulting in an above average overall safety rating. Besides this crash involved wind shear, which has brought down many aircraft of all types.

in 1979, the engine fell of the wing during takeoff
@roykliffen96744 жыл бұрын
@@celtc2128 Yeah, about that ...... it had nothing to do with the design of the DC-10. It was due to gross incompetence on the part of maintenance that found a way to save some money by throwing out the maintenance handbook and invent their own, cheaper way of working. They fatally damaged the plane causing it to fail in a different way than it was designed to fail. Yes, you read that correctly: "designed to fail". If the loads on the engine for whatever reason get to high - which could bring down the aircraft - the mounting is designed to break to let the engine fall free of the wing without causing more damage. Due to faulty maintenance it broke free differently, damaging the wing. It wasn't the engine tearing off that brought the aircraft down, it was the subsequent damage to the wing that did. BTW. In 1992 a Boeing 747 lost both right hand engines after taking off from Amsterdam Airport due to corrosion in the mounting pins.... it crashed into an apartment complex. Its engine mounts weren't damaged as such beforehand, yet nobody considers it an unsafe aircraft.

INTERESTING, BUT HOW ABOUT MAKING A VIDEO ABOUT THE STOLEN BOEING 727? On May 25, 2003, at Quatro deFevereieo Airport in Angola, two men, American pilot Ben Padilla and Mechanic John Mutanto who were employed by TAAG Angola Airlines to prepare a 28 year-old Boeing 727 to be flightworthy boarded the plane. Neither of the men were certified to fly a B727. At about 5:00 PM, the aircraft engines were started up. Without clearance from the tower, the plane began taxiing. The aircraft controllers attempted to communicate with the rogue plane, but were ignored. The plane maneuvered to a Runway, and (again), without clearance or turning on takeoff lights, the plane raced down the runway and climbed into the sky. RADAR indicated it continued gaining altitude as it turned southwest over the Atlantic Ocean. The CIA, FBI, and Scotland Yard franticly searched for the stolen plane, but to no avail. No trace of the plane or men have since been found! The plane was a Boeing 727 built in 1975 and first owned by American Airlines. On the date of the incident, the plane was owned by a U.S. aircraft leasing company, and leased to TAAG Angola Airlines.

@ JOHN MAYZ- I see your point, but there is an interesting video on this channel about the October 24, 1999 crash of PGA golfer, Payne Stewart's private jet. His plane took off for a routine flight, but at some point, veered northwest, and the pilots stopped communicating with ATC. The plane continued uncontrolled untill running out of fuel and crashing in South Dakota. Investigators determined there was a malfunction that caused decompression thus causing all onboard including Payne Stewart to faint, and so in die from lack of oxygen. This is why the pilots stopped communicating. This no response of attempted communication and uncontrolled flight has some similarities to the stolen 727, even though it's due to different causes, and no known crash of the 727 .
@jesseearl71726 жыл бұрын
Apples to Oranges. John makes a great point. If no one knows what happen to the plane, then a video can't be made. Your counter argument with the Payne Stewart case doesn't equal that. Yes, there was no communication, but they were aware of the flight and were tracking it, which is why fighter jets went up to check on it. They knew were it crashed and could investigate what happened. However, the 727 story that no one knows what happen, then a video can't be made. Just because you respond long with a bunch of information about nothing, doesn't mean it's correct.

@ JAMES EARL. The fact the incident of the 727 being stolen being unsolved is what makes it so intriguing. It's a mystery that begs the questions: What was the motive? How must it have been pulled off? Did the plane crash in the ocean? If it did crash, why hasn't one fragment of wreckage been found? If it didn't crash, where might the plane be today (15 years later)?, what happened to the two men? And of course (and perhaps mist disturbing), what may become of the plane? Perhaps to be used as a missile like those on 9/11? It's a mystery with many unanswered questions that leaves us thinking. That's why it could make for a intriguing video.

A lot of commenters are writing about Flight hours. Flight hours are only an indication of experience. If you have had 5000 hours instructing on Senecas then that gives you little to no aid when flying a Boeing 737. Equally it makes a difference what kind of flying you're doing. If I were to fly Amsterdam to Fuerteventura every day I'd pick up 8-10 hours every day and probably learn very little. But if I were to fly Barcelona - Naples I might only pick up about 4 hours of flight experience in total but get a lot more real experience. The really experienced pilots will always be very honest about making mistakes and admit they're still learning.

It wasn't a big deal until the jet age. When a piston powered plane encounters a windshear and loses airspeed/altitude, advancing the throttles results in an instant increase in thrust. Not so with jet engines, especially older ones. They take a bit of time to produce an increase in thrust. If you're close to the ground, there isn't enough time for the delayed thrust response. These days, we have a pretty good idea of when windshear exists and how severe it is. Plus, jet engines are more responsive than they were years ago.
@arinerm13316 жыл бұрын
The larger prop planes also had adjustable pitch on the blades, so at the same engine RPM you could get more thrust instantaneously using this feature.
@1spiralman5 жыл бұрын
The video unfortunately does not show the massive damage to the plane and the terror felt by the passengers when it struck the pier extending out over the harbor and then to gain altitude for seconds only to crash again on the runway and skid all the way into the muddy marsh with the wing in full blaze. the plane ended up in two pieces. You could not even see out the window for it was dark and stormy. I know for i was on this flight on Christmas leave and i lived just a couple of blocks from the airport. I was 21 years old and just got engaged to my wife i still have thank God. Since then i have not been a big fan of flying and had to fly the same airline and a DC-10, 2 weeks later to get back to my ship. When i dived down the chute because of the fire and made it safety i can tell you i had a different look at life after this and i took nothing for granted again. P.S. It is true your life does flash in front of you and it seemed like an eternity for it to come to a stop. God bless.

Every crash involved with a wind shear they ask for the VASI to be installed, but the system should already be helping the crew. The poor crew had no chance too recover the aircraft, it was already too low for actions, and it takes 7-9 seconds until the throttle command is transferred to the engine.

There is another channel on here that started after you did and doesn't go nearly into the depth and information that your videos do. They are very much a copy to day the least and a ripoff to put it bluntly. They seem to be done almost mechanically with no feeling and much of the information ripped off from your videos. This is not right. I reported the other channel. It almost seems like a bot because the sub titles are all mis-spelled and not timed right with the videos. One I remember that almost seemed like a direct copy or rip off was the DC-10 flight where the cargo doors were being blown out during pressurization one plane barely made it to landing and another crashed a few years later. Those were almost identical to your videos. Keep up the good work. ChuckyD..

It’s crazy the number of incidents/fatalities these aircraft gathered over the years. I’m no aircraft engineer but I don’t see the benefits of having the engine mounted in the tail to begin with. I bet the extra weight on the back had to mess up the CoG a bit somehow... Not to mention the main controls and hydraulic lines, unnaturally placed so close in that area.
@AllecJoshuaIbay6 жыл бұрын
The tail engine was there because at the time the DC-10 was introduced, the ETOPS at the time prevented twinjets from making flights over ocean. Quadjets such as the 747 were utilized for that. But Quadjets were gas guzzlers. The solution were trijets.

Allec Joshua Ibay Thanks, I did not know about that policy. I can see why they concluded it was safer at first (on paper though).

DC-10's - if they didn't fail, they were jinxed.

Scare Crow At least because they failed, we learned from their failures. Airplanes are definitely the safest way to travel now.

There's always one that talks out of their butt...definitely can't blame the jet for this one.

Scare Crow Let's see ... the fantastic Great Eastern was the greatest ship afloat but she was WAY too advanced as a vessel for that time 1860s and was written off in 1889. They found the remains of a worker within her hull while she was broken up. Perhaps the remains of a worker were discovered inside the very first DC10 and thus created your so-called jinx.

Wind shear wasn't fully understood for almost another 20 years, but no VASI? Even small country airports in the US had VASI - but not Logan?

Guys, just because the DC-10 has had terrible, and many fatal crashes doesn’t mean that the DC-10 is a bad aircraft. I mean come on, I am going to fly for Swiss International Airlines, and I may fly the DC-10, and not give a crap. My favorite aircraft is the DC-10. Do you agree with me?

Maybe from my perspective Japan's view of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Maybe from my perspective Germany's Luftwaffe of the London blitz during the Battle of Britain from May 1940 till about the end of 1941.
