When I converted to the DC 10-10, our pilots praised the auto systems to the skies. It was like a spaceship after flying the 707. They loved to keep the auto throttle on for landing, which maintained speed and closed automatically at 30 ft above the runway when landing. I NEVER used the auto throttle for landing . I always felt that any failure, so near to the ground would be hard to detect and rectify. In two years I was Chief Pilot Standards for the DC-10. This accident happened around that time and I issued instructions that the A/T could not be used for landing (except in the case of a full autoland in fog --and then speeds must be closely monitored. ) A pilot, from his/her earliest days in training was taught that monitoring the airspeed on approach was a good way to stay alive. Letting the autos fly YOU instead of the other way around has caused a number of recent accidents. Autos are useful but a pilot, by the very description, should be able to fly the plane manually on line --if it is required. I was also Chief on the 747 and never used the A/T for landing on that type as well. 7500 hours in command on the 747---and ALWAYS monitored the airspeed!!!

I've flown on SAS from the States to Europe quite a few times. One of the most memorable trips was when I was around 11 back in 1980. We took a SAS flight on a 747 from LAX to Copenhagen. We then switched planes and took a DC8 from Copenhagen to Oslo. Talk about cramped after being on a 747. Always had a good experience flying SAS though.

Is there a reason why they did not or could not conduct a go-round, knowing the length of the runway? I know the primary cause was pilot error but the NTSB did not cite the choice to not abort the landing altogether as an obvious cause. Is it just too hard to gauge the length of remaining usable runway in such poor visibility until it is too late?

IKR I cheered at 4:19. As for the plane - when it comes down to it, it's just a big pile of machinery. Now the pilots I think will be able to find work elsewhere. Maybe or maybe not as pilots, but somewhere. And that's assuming they got fired at all - it's entirely possible that they just had to go through more training to strengthen their abilities regarding coordination and landing in bad weather. I cite Mentour Pilot's video about what if pilots make a mistake to reinforce my notion of the pilots not being fired.

I mean part of it isn’t human failure, he trusted the system to the point where it failed him, pushing the engine to 84% throttle from where they managed to disconnect it and throttle down, imagine them trying to takeoff after that, they would had definitely had a worse time in that situation. Honestly he choose a path that reduced damage and casualties after a hard landing situation.

Hopefully, you only make that mistake once; thankfully, everyone lived to tell about it. Let’s all pledge a few bucks ... come on... even the $1.00 a month pledge would be awesome for this young man, and I know I sure get a $1.00 month EASILY out of this. A lot of us probably think he’s making bank off of this ... but he’s not. I know NOTHING about him other than what I read on his patreon account. I’m not a “friend” shilling for him, I don’t know him... I don’t know his family... and unless I’m six degrees away from him and Kevin Bacon, I don’t know anyone who knows him.... but I suspect that if you go to his account you will think like I do, and see a hard working young man with some talent who provides us with some good quality enjoyment, and hopefully you will kick in a few bucks... I’m gonna finish my coffee, and post this on some of his other videos too and try to kickstart some interest here, and then drop him some bucks myself. (I’d already have done that, but it would require me to get off the couch and find my wallet lol... but I swear I’m gonna pledge today!! Seriously.). Help me to help him.... repost this, or your own comments, on his other vids and let’s get him motivated to continue his efforts for us.
