The wind situation is a real problem in that it's so unpredictable. I'm an avid bowhunter and bow hunt almost every day from the last week of September through November and then as cold permits December through January. Out of hunting season I'm busy fishing almost every day for bass and musky. Over the last 5 years I've kept records matching the National Weather Service's wind prediction by hour to what actually happens. My records indicate the National Weather Service's prediction of the wind is at best 50% correct. What this means is you can't just play the wind. You must also keep yourself and your clothes and all your gear and equipment scent free. You also need to consider if the wind slows to zero now what will the thermals do? Is there anything downwind from you that can alter the wind direction and take left right or down or up. When I pick an area to hunt, I prep several trees for me to climb depending on the expected wind condition and also based on thermals if there is no wind. I also maintain an expensive and time-consuming scent control process because 50% of the time the wind won't be as expected.

I'm a little paranoid when heading out to the woods in the Fall. The winds are so unpredictable and rarely correct for the entirety of the hunt. I do my best with scent control in hopes that the deer won't booger too bad if the wind doesn't cooperate. I don't believe we can become invisible to the deer like John Eberhart preaches but it definitely helps their reaction to not be as severe. Sometimes you can play the wind while other times it plays you. The struggle is real. Keep the content coming 👍

I love watching these videos because they scarily resemble how I’ve hunted for decades, minus the technology of trail cameras and “scent sprays.” I’m not passing judgment, I come from an older time. One of my favorite strategies is to have multiple stand sites in as many different parcels as possible so I can play the wind and time game as efficiently as possible. For example, if things are right south of town, that’s where I’ll hunt, even if I had my heart set on hunting north of town. Around here, we have to hunt as smart as possible AND as hard as possible to get whatever deer, and knowing as much land and stands as possible (public and private) more than helps, and hunting every season available definitely helps.

Have 27 ladder stands on 5 farms plus I’m a big tree saddle guy for last 25 years. I always play the wind. Going to try scentlok this year using John Eberhart regime and hunt where I want regardless of wind, we’ll see how that turns out. Love your videos

Not sure I’ll ever fully understand how the wind works but one can learn a lot from their mistakes. Bizarre how wind can be predominant from one direction but swirl off a bluff and head the other direction. This thermal thing stinks too! Always remember cold air sinks.

Why it's harder on public land is you have no control on others and their hunting styles. A set of squirrel hunters in October can blow out a nice buck you have painstakingly scouted and have done everything right. You touch on it in other videos, the key to killing really any buck on public is getting away from people, some states are easier than others. Great videos, Keep em up!

Wind is never a factor as far as I'm concerned. Be scent free. Use deer scents. I have deer walk in and bed down in front of me, downwind, all of the time. They'll lay there for an hour and not be spooked unless they catch me moving. Can't remember the last time I spooked a deer for scent. 20 years or more probably. People don't do enough to manage their scent. I have deer coming into the property from every direction. The terrain changes the direction constantly. If I had to worry about the wind, I could never hunt. My clothes hang outside on my porch from September to January 1st. I smell like the woods all of the time. Until I got new owners on the neighboring property, alerting the deer of the presence of hunters was never an issue.

Hi Ted ..the wind is only a factor if you want to be the best hunter that you can be and shoot the oldest bucks and not ruin your hunting land for building the best deer herd. Other than those 3 things I would even consider wind direction...
@tedrickabus2087
@tedrickabus2087 Жыл бұрын
I get it. Prior to the last two years (new novice neighbors) I kept track of 15 different bucks, all age classes, 4 of which were shooters for my area. Now they're gone before rifle season. Not sure how I manage the neighbor. Can't even get him to meet me so I can give him tips. He just complains about not seeing deer as he doesn't realize his problem is him. (And now my problem as well).
