It’s amazing how quickly it went from “Hey everyone, we’re making another SW movie starring Rey!” to “Everyone’s mad we’re making another Rey movie, but we’re doing it anyway!” to “We got an obnoxious activist director and y’all are just istophobes!” to “Yeah, the Rey movie is delayed indefinitely…” What’s it been? 45:40 - I think the reason that some believe that things need to be "dumbed down" is that we have sooo many choices now as to what to watch and the FOMO factor.It's getting pretty difficult to decide on which shows to dedicate our time to, so studios and creators need to come up with quick hits in order to capture our attention without having us actually think about what we're watching. Quite the dynamic, actually.

Looking at all the announced Star Wars projects that have probably been abandoned I can't help but think about the old British political concept of Masterly Inactivity. The general idea is when you announce something and it's immediately hit with immense negativity you proceed to say nothing about it. You give no updates, when people ask you about the subject you give the most nothing or reflective response possible and you generally pretend that whatever was met with negativity doesn't exist until people have completely and utterly forgotten about it. Then in a few years, or however long it takes for people to completely forget about your subject, you come out with the most under the radar press release possible to say that the thing that was met with a negative response isn't going forward. Because everyone has forgotten about the subject at this point, most people won't hear this statement , and the rest will respond with indifference. This way you avoid having to do the thing that everyone would've hated, and you also avoid the negative press you would receive from cancelling it immediately. I 100% believe that this is the exact strategy that Disney is currently using. Just watch.

The destruction of the Enterprise in Search for Spock is one of the defining moments in cinema; it's so shocking, so totally unexpected, that at the time I genuinely thought Kirk had a trick up his sleeve to keep it from happening. The reaction of the audience in the cinema where I saw it (when it first came out) was total stunned silence. And Kirk himself gets the only line that can do the moment justice: "My God, Bones, what have I done?" End of an era.

What is it about Wonka that makes people think "I wanna see his backstory"?! He's a being who has been self-exiled with no human contact, for decades, in an enormous closed factory in the middle of a city. He is a global living legend, whose products have drawn the attention of the world's rich and powerful, yet even they cannot (or are afraid to) breach his closed factory. He presides over numerous ruptures in the fabric of reality including interdimensional portals, spontaneous generation of matter, gravity manipulation, and several other powerful magics. He is caretaker of an alien species he calls "oompa loompas" (though it is unclear if that is actually their name, or simply a phrase that bookends their songs), and whose culture and motives remain almost entirely unknown, except for their apparent casual disregard for human life. Whatever backstory they provide is guaranteed to be a disappointment. I always assumed he was a demigod or some other ethereal being who had chosen to do this for his own amusement.

Michael Arndt doesn't get the blame he deserves for setting up the Sequel Trilogy. People forget that Kasdan and Abrams were last minute writing replacements because Arndt failed to produce a complete script in time. It was Arndt who pushed Luke to the end of the movie because Rey kept being overshadowed by him when he showed up. Kasdan and Abrams had to work with that framework to get the movie made on time. Abrams was only supposed to direct the film, not write it, and Kasdan (who also doesn't get enough blame) was pulled off writing the Solo movie to work with Abrams on the script.

Using the song Crane Wife by The Decemberists as a reference/basis for this metaphor: Disney came across a wounded bird and took it into their warm, impregnable home. Disney nursed it back to health, helped it spread its glorious wings again and let the crane fly away. It came back bearing golden eggs, but this time, instead of nursing these new hatchlings the way Disney did before... he sells them to the nearest bidder. People who have no warmth in their hearts for these precious gifts, only a desire to make more money. In transit, these eggs have either been cracked to make horrifying omlettes or clumsily dropped to the wayside and lost. None of them have been brought to term and fully realized. With egg sales down and the Crane Wife no longer producing, what is Disney left to do but butcher the crane itself and eat its emaciated corpse. They were handed a perfect money-making machine, complete with blueprints of what and what not to do, by Marvel and they somehow fucked up at an accelerated rate with zero respect for the clear omens.

45:34 Speaking on what the show runner for the sapronos said about studios wanting TV show makers to dumb down their shows it is absolutely asinine when you sit and think about it. One of the most successful and loved shows in recent memory was Better Call Saul. It is so hard to capture or even beat Breaking Bad yet the writers and actors were able to easily do it and not only did they do it, they created another staple in the culture and if anyone has seen better call Saul you know it is not a “turn your brain off” type of show. It requires you to notice every little detail, every piece of dialogue, and literally has multiple legal court scenes that even requires the viewer to do research on the side to get a full understanding and yet it was wildly successful. It was not successful merely because of breaking bad. It was successful because the characters were well written, scenes were powerful, the music was awesome and IT TREATED THE AUDIENCE WITH RESPECT. It is that simple. I cannot believe studios are this confused about how to make good TV.

Simple answer. Those folk meeting in Davos right now also control what they want you to watch - they don’t want you viewing thought-provoking material, they want a reduced subservient workforce in debt to the state eating bugs and renting appliances.
I know it's superheroes, but it always bothers me that she "restarted" the sun because THAT'S NOT HOW SUNS WORK! A sun isn't just a big candle you can blow out or light with a giant Bic. It either has a sufficient mass of lighter elements (e.g. hydrogen) and spontaneously begins nuclear fusion because of gravity or it doesn't. And once fusion begins you can't stop it until it burns all of it's fuel, not even by blowing on it really, really hard. Once it does run out of fuel it can't be restarted no matter what. People will sometimes say 'what if you added more fuel' and I suppose maybe that's technically possible, but you'd have to add a mass of hydrogen equivalent to something like 100x the mass of all the planets in our solar system combined so, you know, good luck with that.

WORST THING I EVER DID DRUNK: On my 29th birthday (I am now 41), I started the night off with a Martini as we had gone out to a hooka bar. and my friends all kept buying me drinks. 14 drinks and 6 shots in under 2 hrs, (so I was shown) I was black out drunk. i was shown a vid the next day of me singing (VERY BADLY) hitting on women at the bar, "Well enough to get three phone numbers, telling a friends now ex-GF something and making her swear to never speak of it again. (she still wont tell me what I said.) proposing to MY GF, getting sick in the bathroom and then drunkenly doing katas on my front lawn at 430 in the morning. then waking up the next afternoon with HALF my friend group cutting ties with me. and nobody will tell me why saying that I know what I did. when I have ZERO memory of the events after like the 6th drink (I HATE Washington apples now)

I take umbrage with the discussion at 1:32:42 American Hollywood is in decline but so what? For most of us Hollywood is as foreign as Korean Cinema. There is nothing wrong with finding beauty in non-western art. If that is where the quality is then so be it.
@SaltpeterTaffy10 ай бұрын
What's wrong is there being no beauty in western art. There ought to be an American film industry worthy of respect.

@@SaltpeterTaffy "Ought" and "Should" are the most dangerous words in the English language. They lead to a lot of suffering and misery. If the main stream American film industry is bad then I will look elsewhere, it's that simple. How it "ought to be" is not important. All that matters is what is. Fandoms grow and change and get adopted all of the time. No one person and no one culture has ownership of "story" as a concept. Once it is out into the world, in a sense it belongs to everyone. So, it doesn't matter what the origin is.
@SaltpeterTaffy10 ай бұрын
@@genmaicha.lapsang Utter nonsense. You've latched on to a single word in my sentence and dismissed it wholesale on the grounds that you think it's a "dangerous" word? Spare me your philosophical waxing on my language. You are a coward in its use. The inverse of my sentiment is "There ought not to be an American film industry worth respecting." Do you honestly believe that? I hope not, because that sentiment is idiotic. As an American, I value my own culture. I wish for there to exist a culture of my people, and I wish for it to have value to myself and to others around the world. Imagine if those people whose cultures you import and consume did not have cultures of their own worth consuming. You wouldn't be able to have your happy little global a la carte. You want for them exactly what I want for mine. I want it for them, too. I don't know why you are so happy to watch my culture burn. I'll have you know I reject the death-of-the-author hypothesis. So there's no meaningful discussion to be had on that regard, since you seem to hold it as gospel. And no, the most dangerous words in the English language are not "ought" and "should." Those words save tens of thousands of lives every year in the form of OSHA regulations. The most dangerous word in the English language is "yes." It is the verbal transfer of power.

@therotten6152 Because when the cultural destruction happens to America it's totally okay. We Americans agonize all the time about genocide, we wallow in shame, but the rest of the world doesn't give a country fuck when it happens to us. Fucking xenophobes, man.

Although Billy Mitchell did have his records returned to a Twin Galaxies historical records database and the article on Twin Galaxies accusing him of cheating removed, he was most definitely not exonerated. Basically a judge ruled that there was insufficient evidence to 100% prove he cheated because of the poor quality of video evidence from the time of his record submission. There is, frankly, an almost overwhelming amount of circumstantial evidence that he did, but things work differently in a courtroom/arbitration. So Twin Galaxies created a static historical records database for all records pre-2012 when the current owners bought the company that practically has the heading "take these records with a brick of salt". Mitchell no doubt considers this a win and has undoubtedly advertised it as a vindication to anyone who will still listen to him, but I don't think anyone will ever consider him anything but a cheater anymore.

Most of the posted comments are centered around one of two topics:how great old school movies from back in the day are,or how much entertainment sucks today in comparison to past endeavors. On this subject I recall a maxim from one of my favorite books:Hagakure,the book of the Samurai,that when speaking with someone who's endured defeat or tragedy instead of offering the usual sympathetic platitudes it is better to say,"Perhaps this occurrence is a good thing,as the situation may end up in your favor." I prefer that to wallowing in my own misery,because they're ruining beloved franchises,but there will eventually come a point where NOBODY cares about their next DEI project/push,and they find themselves irrelevant and powerless. The independent creators;on the other hand,are on the rise,as more and more people who are sick of these companies selling out quality products for ESG money clamor for new entertainment that doesn't focus on "THE MESSAGE",or throwing straight white male characters into the trash for "muh diversity." As Master Sun so succinctly put it in The Art of War,"Strike when you are empty,and your enemy is full."
