There's a great small detail I think you guys missed. The tracking shot of Shaun going about his morning where he walks down the street to the convenient store he original goes in, goes to the fridge, pulls out a diet coke only to change his mind and get a regular coke. Then him and Liz get into a fight where she mentions he never sticks to his diets or works out. The following day when they repeat the tracking shot but the world has gone to shit, he goes to the store and pulls out a regular coke only to change his mind and get a diet coke because of what Liz said. It's something I didn't notice right away but it's a great little character detail.

I know people love Hot Fuzz (and it is good) but this is my favorite of the Cornetto Trilogy. I remember when this hit theaters out of nowhere in the States. I just wanted to see it because it was a zombie horror comedy and then completely falling in love with the movie. I had no idea who the people who made it were (Spaced didn't have a DVD release in the States at the time) but my friends and I immediately set about finding more stuff from pretty much everyone involved. One of my friends got their hands of a regionless DVD player and the British DVD set of Spaced and we ended up loving that too. But Shaun will always be one of my favorites. Great movie who's cleverness and giddy heights are rarely reached by films these days.
@slimjimpui
@slimjimpui 3 жыл бұрын
I think that Shaun is better paced and even when shit gets crazy towards the end; it keeps the stakes high so it never seems farcical. Hot Fuzz has a great build up but it falls through in the execution of the action stuff in the third act. Once I gauged that I was watching something akin to those insufferable Channel Awesome anniversary crossovers where everyone is screaming and throwing stuff at each other I kinda zoned out
@MrGeorgeFlorcus
@MrGeorgeFlorcus 3 жыл бұрын
One clever directorial aspect of the film that I liked is how, thematically, the film is all about how we (represented by Shaun) are all so wrapped up in our daily motions, that we often miss or overlook major events in our lives, and downplay the significance of the wider world around us. And to convey this, _many_ of the shots in the first half of the film are filmed from either a medium or close up of Shaun, to the point that Shaun himself takes up much of the screen in many of the early shots of the film. We only drift away from this hyper-focus on Shaun at key moment when he is interacting with/noticing things happening in the world. Talking with Pete, noticing odd behavior of pedestrians, etc. And it's because of this framing that Edgar Wright is able to frequently interject various aspects of Shaun's personal life; whether it be an arm, a telephone, or a person's face; as a complete to surprise to distract from what's going on. As the film progresses, the camera more frequently wanders away from Shaun; focusing on other characters, filming from a more comfortable distance, and including more group shots, to reflect the fact that Shaun is getting a wider and wider perspective on his life and the apocalypse that is engulfing his world. As his perspective widens, the perspective of the camera and the films focus also _physically_ widens.

No one mentioned that the 'dogs can't look up' line came from the making of Spaced? There was the ep in season 2 where Colin the dog, after feeling unloved, had started sneaking next door for attention. There was a scene where the doggo was running across the lawn to the gap in the back fence and Daisy from the upstairs window was calling to him. (well her - doggo actor was actually a gal doggo) The plan was that Colin would look up to the window, but then keep walking to the hole in the fence, but despite the fact they would call from the upstairs window, the dog would always turn and look horizontally towards the house's back door. Edgar became convinced from that that dogs literally could not look up and I think it became a running in joke with him and Pegg. (we had a doggo that would do similar. We would look out the kitchen window and see him 'up to something' and tap on the window to let him know we could see him. He would always look at the back door rather than the window. I guess doggo minds work on the fact that they know they can hear you from the window, but if you are going to come out you are clearly going to come through the door, hence they watch the door to see if you are coming out or not.)

I dont know if you touch on this but regarding Philip..i like how shaun starts off by shrugging off that he has to kill philip and then imagining his plans going through in that montage and in each one he kills Philip in a smooth and cool way ..but when he actually gets to the house its suddenly difficult and you feel for Philip. Movie knows how to do comedy but still make us care about characters.

There are no wasted moments in this movie. Every little second is used (visually, tonal, dialogue, music, etc.) in the best possible way to create THE BEST (BRITISH) Zombie-flic. 20:45 Good point! The thin line, mixing comedy and a true horrorfilm was quite dangerous. So many movies try and totally fail. But Edgar Whrigt, Pegg & Frost totally hit the sweet spot! Thats what makes this film so rewatchable and beautiful. You easily connect with all characters; you laugh, fear and even die with them. Masterpiece

15:55 - when Ed takes the phone from Sean and says, "We're coming to get you, Barbara!", it was a deliberate homage to George Romero's "Night of the Living Dead." The original line is at the beginning, when Barbara's brother is teasing her in the cemetery, saying, "They're coming to get you, Barbara!" Fun fact: Romero was at the premiere, and Simon/Nick were talking to him after the film, and they asked him what he thought of the homage. He didn't recognize it! They had to point it out to him!

It would be interesting to have a discussion about Spaced now. Going back and watching it after the Cornetto Trilogy has happened, you certainly notice where a lot of their ideas for the films originated from. There's the famous zombie episode where Tim (Simon Pegg) has done a load of cheap speed and does an all-nighter playing Resident Evil, then the next day he starts freaking out and seeing everyone as zombies. There's the paintball episode where they take it way too seriously and Mike (Nick Frost) has an overly dramatic 'death' scene after being hit by a paintball. There's Peter Serafinowicz playing a right prick in Duane Benzie There's the Robot Wars episode where their rival Dexter is kinda similar to the Andies from Hot Fuzz. There's a lot of parallels

Just as I was done watching the Hot Fuzz Happy Hour AND the movie itself, this pops off! That's awesome! Pouring myself some rum and here we go! Edit: I like that at the beginning they go right into the contrast between Shaun and David. It made me realize that as far as storytelling goes, we're much more favorable to incompetent characters with good intentions than characters that are correct but with ulterior motives or an arrogant attitude. Most characters in this movie embody who Shaun should or shouldn't be (the most obvious being Ed and their flatmate Peter Sefruhkfflsdkjfsky), it's such a well crafted film!
@MrGeorgeFlorcus

I think that goes to show how much we, as people, value intent; we're willing to forgive flawed people whose intentions are good, so long as they are capable of improving and that their flaws aren't critical/dangerous, but a smart and logical person with ill-intent is someone to be mistrusted.

I had the honor of showing this movie to my little sister sometime a year or so ago. My sister is someone who generally prefers animations, not really into live action films for the most part, but she really likes Zombieland and Scott Pilgrim, inclusing the Scott Pilgrim movie by Edgar Wright. So, I billed this movie to her as "Like Zombieland, but made by the guy who did Scott Pilgrim, also it's British." And that was enough to get interested. I thoroughly love this movie, and while I think Hot Fuzz edges it out just slightly, I have a bit more of a personal attachment to this film in the Cornetto Trilogy for that reason. (Also, I wrote an essay on this film in college; pretty rudimentary stuff by my present-self's standards but it got me a perfect mark none-the-less, so I'll take it).

Also details like Pete has a scorching red mark down his body, because he clearly was in the shower standing under hot water all morning. Just one of hundreds of details Edgar Wright didn’t have to put in, but he did it anyways and gives the film much more authenticity and humour on multiple viewings. Baby driver is another good movie I’d recommend.

As an American and only speaking for myself...British comedy is always hit or miss with me. I wasn't expecting to like Shaun of the Dead, but considering it was a zombie movie which is one of my personal favorites, I decided to give it a watch anyway (years ago)...and I absolutely loved it. I watched Hot Fuzz as well, but just thought it was okay. And a little off topic, but damn I miss Benny Hill. That Brit was a genius, and it saddens me how he was one of the first casualties of the woke Leftist mindset that was starting to gain ground. Benny Hill is missed but never forgotten.

You guys forgot to point out the most terrifying thing in this film, namely, the obscene prices for those teeny, tiny, t.v.'s for sale at Shaun's workplace. The horror... the horror...

Definitely should watch dead don't die. Bill Murray and Adam Driver are fantastic in that, which is not hard for either of them to achieve

The one takeaway I got from this is that people see 'The Worlds End', as the 'worst(yes i know its good, but the see it as the worst of the 3)', and that hurts me personally. I like SotD, and Hot Fuzz, but I think The Worlds End is honestly the best. I lived a wayward teenage years of being both main characters. I was often the serious best friend and the intoxicated asshole who no one could believe. That movie hit me like a ton of bricks...

I think WE is my actually favourite. I didn't get it the first time and was actually a bit disappointed after seeing it in the theaters. Hot Fuzz by comparison I went straight back and watched again the next day and would have done it the third day except I had plans to catch up with mates. Was only when I picked up the DVD a few months later that WE 'clicked' for me and I really started to appreciate the characters and their story arcs more.

Hot Fuzz took a second watch for me to click. The transition between the start and end of the movie is pretty abrupt. Once you know it's coming it's a fun movie.
