I've also come to the opinion that he kind of knows his reputation amongst the kids, and screws with them for the lulz. The scene where Kevin steals the toothbrush from the store is because the old man was really taking the piss. He slaunters up to Kevin at the register, thumps down a bloody hand on the counter, and gives him a haunting look and doesn't say a word. Kevin freaks out and starts running away and he doesn't say anything nor appears cognizant that he would come off as really creepy to a child unless he was indeed messing with him. He knows Kevin, he sees him often, and the kids in the house are often staring out at him. He also would give a menacing stare when catching Kevin peeping from the window. I usually wave at a neighbor if I see them peeking outside, like if I'm shoveling snow at 3am or something, so as to say 'everythings alright'. Either that or I suppose we're supposed to be seeing it from Kevin's perspective where he's a scary serial killer, similar to the way the furnace's access door opens up like a mouth laughing and trying to 'eat' Kevin. Either way, yes, he's a great character.

In watching this video I thought: You know, I doubt Caulkin knew how to act, he had to be properly directed. Then I thought, it should be a thing that there should be directors who specialize in child directing, almost specifically. Because almost in all cases child actors just fall flat or suck. They are only placeholder characters, unless the main character whom was carefully chosen with experience. But getting a new face, new to movies child to act... That requires somebody who knows how to properly direct a child, and in a way that is appropriate, as adults can be treated in a way children cannot. Getting a child to be a personality isn't hard, it's to know how to get them to do all the finder details right that do well for scenes and cameras. Every movie that does good child directing it seems becomes unforgettable. Every movie that doesn't becomes obscure, falls flat and straight up forgotten. Not to mention, we really don't bring up child actors to have a long standing career in acting, they just get used up and (borderline) abused, burnt out and ruined. Crazy to see all the young child actors ruined or not have standing in roles as adults.

It's interesting to see that his family is either hostile or apathetic towards Kevin. Even as they all return to the house, they all are not concerned with his safety or the fact that he was abandoned as they all walk by him. It seemed like only the mom was worried, and his dad kinda treated the situation like, dare I say it, "Nah, it'll be fine".
@sidwhiting6652 жыл бұрын
As a Dad of three myself, Kevin's Dad's response is pretty believable. Dads tend to worry less about our kids compared to moms, and this goes for our sons in particular. Kevin is age 7, by which point he can operate most of the home systems (heat, electrical, water), lock the door, and probably didn't even need to go grocery shopping. As I recall, the trip to Paris was only for about 4 days anyway. The probably had enough food in the fridge or mac 'n cheese and hot dogs that most kids could make.
@athatcher93672 жыл бұрын
@@sidwhiting665 I believe it, when I was 7 my parents had taught me to make very simple meals and by the time I was 10 I’d spent a few days at home by myself once or twice. So long as Kevin was taught the importance of turning the stove off if he uses it (and other similar safety things)… there’s probably not a huge amount to worry about if he just stays inside the house. Unless there’s insane burglars who wanna bite his fingers off after he leads them through a series of boobytraps, but what are the odds of that?
@hisdudeness83282 жыл бұрын
Don’t forget, the McCallesters are hinted to be very well off, so they clearly live in a very nice part of town where break ins and other stuff are just not thought about because they never happen in their area. So as long as Kevin knew how to use a microwave and remembered to turn appliances off, it’s doubtful that there would be any extreme thing to worry about if Kevin was home alone for 2-3 days. Also, the mom immediately jumped on a return flight back to America, and the husband and rest of the family had no way of knowing that she would run into one snafu after another that kept her from getting home just barely before they did. As far as they knew, the mom got home to Kevin that very same night. It should be pointed out that Kevin’s older sister does show genuine concern for him when talking to his older brother Buzz. But Buzz brushes off her worries for the same reasons I pointed out above.
@AdderTude2 жыл бұрын
@@hisdudeness8328 Wasn't it that same sister that called Kevin "les incompetents?" The confidence that Kevin developed in the first film carried over into the sequel when Buzz humiliated him the following year at their school Christmas recital and when his family wanted him to apologize, he flipped out because Buzz merely sucked up to their parents instead of being genuinely sorry ("Beat that, you little trout sniffer.") and even when he told his mom the truth, Kate still didn't believe him. That's why Kevin said he wanted to have his own vacation away from them. It's a more confident statement than merely saying he wished they'd disappear.

The whole movie works on so many levels and has so many poignant, funny, memorable moments: 1) Kevin getting missed in the headcount because the yappy neighbor kid is asking so many questions. 2) The "look what you did you little jerk" line by Uncle Frank... what parent, no matter how upset with their kid, would let someone else talk to their kid that way? 3) Buzz's tarantula scampering around the house a few times before winding up on Marv's face. 4) Kevin's grocery trip and also the "Is this toothbrush approved by the American Dental Association?" Just the kind of inane question you'd expect a kid to ask about a 50 cent item. 5) Hearing the Morley's daughter sing "O Holy Night" in an almost cathedral-like church. 6) Marv taking a nail in through the foot. 7) Harry doing a back flip and landing on the corner edge of the icy front stairs.... that's some seriously good stunt work! 8) The pizza delivery scene where Snakes gets "blown away" as Kevin fools Marv. 9) Counting how many times people run over the metal statue in front of the house. 10) Kevin walking home with two grocery bags that rip. 11) The whole Angels With Filthy Souls bit.... which they hilariously carried over into Lost in New York. 12) Kevin being disgusted that no one in Buzz's Playboy is wearing any clothing. 13) The "Wet Bandits" gag... and Marv wearing a snorkel while they rob houses. 14) Morley reunited with his son's family near the end, just as Kevin's family reunites with him. And so many more.... . There's just not enough room to list all the cool, interesting moments that stick with you. Truly a classic that should last for many Christmases to come!

"I've seen the movie a dozen times and I'm still not entirely sure how many kids there actually are." Kevin's immediate family is actually shown in a photograph next to his parent's bed. He looks at it as he says goodnight to his missing family in one scene. Likewise, they are the only ones who come back home at the end of the movie. It's also notable that Kevin's siblings typically have more to say to him at the beginning of the movie. He's their annoying little brother, so they are less reluctant to say rude things to him the night before the trip. The rest of the family is complicated, but it works out: Kevin's dad Peter is the middle child of three boys. Frank, the obnoxious uncle, is the oldest brother, and Rob is the youngest brother. Rob is living in France which is why the families are traveling overseas to visit. Frank has 5 kids: Tracy, Rod, Sondra, Brooke, and Fuller. For the most part these cousins are notable for having maybe one or two lines in the movie at most. They're practically extras who exist just to have more kids in the group to make it more likely that Kevin would get missed. Peter and Kate McCallister have 5 children as well: Buzz, Meghan, Linnie, Jeff, and Kevin. Rob has 4 children, three of them living in France with him and his wife. Only Heather is still living back in the United States as she is going to college. It makes a total of eleven, which is even directly referenced in a line when Heather is asked to do a headcount. "Eleven, including me. Five boys, six girls, four parents, two drivers, and a partridge in a pear tree."

There was so much time and care put into the first one, and to a lesser extent - the second, as you can see setup and payoff throughout the entire movie. Chekhov's Gun is everywhere in the film. The first is a total classic but the second is my personal favorite. I think Kevin is so....justified in the second film. Kevin's family gets what they deserve and I love seeing Kevin enjoy New York so righteously for a brief period (and continue his kindness to strangers, which is clearly not something he's learned from his family). I find the soundtrack to be just a tinge superior to my personal taste. Most of all, I'm amazed that they make the same gimmick work, while not feeling tired and even were able to top the beat-downs given to the thieves. I never considered Buzz's performance but you definitely make me think about it. He's perfectly detestable, which usually indicates he's probably a pretty nice dude in real life.

@specialk94242 жыл бұрын
The power was fixed rather quickly. Otherwise, how could he have lights on, watch movies, microwave his mac & cheese, etc.? They couldn't call him, because they were in Europe, and when they did finally make an international call, it was to the police. "Rose, hyper on 2". I suspect Kevin wouldn't have answered the phone, anyway, and may have unplugged it, but that's never shown. And the mom wasn't concerned about calling home, she was damn well GETTING home, come Hell or high water. And you have to remember cell phones weren't a thing back then. Yes, they existed, but they were extremely expensive, and not nearly the palm computers of today, and not every person had one.

Macaulay Culkin had actually worked with the Home Alone's writer and producer John Hughes (and John Candy) the previous year on the underrated and hilarious Uncle Buck. In a bit of a sneak peek at what was to come, there's even a scene in that film where Culkin's character looks out thru the mail slot and imagines he sees a gang of robbers instead of the woman who's actually there. Hughes actually wrote Kevin specifically for Culkin, so that's probably one of the reasons the character works so well.

Supposedly, Daniel Stern's scream was actually because he is an arachnophobe, and was told only minutes before filming the shot, that they had to replace the prop with a real tarantula. On a separate note, one rare thing that the sequel managed to accomplish was allowing the main character to maintain his character arc -- He doesn't regress into the same kid he was previously, this time being more assertive, quick to action and all-around more capable of surviving on his own, at least for a few days. Most sequels that execute the "same but different" formula and act as successors to films that contain genuine character development are forced to undo a lot of the progress the characters made, but Home Alone 2 actually incorporated Kevin's development from this first film very well.
@Thomasmemoryscentral2 жыл бұрын
The only thing they sort of had to undo is the family once again at the start is mean to Kevin over a stunt Buzz pulled but this time hes in full view if the family given he and Kevin perform in a Christmas choir.
@kimp71602 жыл бұрын
@@Thomasmemoryscentral Agreed. The first movie also established that Kevin was legitimately a pain to his family as well so even if their reactions to an 8 year old were over-the-top you could understand why they would brush him off in the midst of the chaos. His sister wasn't far off when she said he was "what the French call Les Incompetents". Her rudeness made you root for him but was she really all that wrong at that point? But in the sequel, Buzz was plainly antagonising Kevin while clearly old enough to have known better and the audience laughing at Kevin for such a childish prank on Buzz's part was inane.
@jonathankozenko2 жыл бұрын
@@Thomasmemoryscentral True, but one thing they also did well was Buzz's antics were more innocent-looking - he was still a massive asshole, but he learned to make it look like he was being playful when he as in fact just being a bully. Because of that, when Kevin lashed out, they more saw Kevin as having overreacted to the situation more than anything.
@scout360pyroz2 жыл бұрын
@@Thomasmemoryscentral well, the family never really develops or has a chance to change. The only one going through any real trials or changes is Kevin and the people he meets. The family is left alone unable to really develop, and ends up with a rather boring Christmas each time outside of the trauma for Kevin's parents. And as a result, Buzz becomes the perfect tool to set up a similar feeling of conflict, while Kevin's growth and confidence leads him to blow up spectacularly on them.

A true masterpiece! My favorite scene is the blowtorch trap! Between the trap itself, and Joe Pesci's reaction to it, it never fails to make me shriek with laughter! I didn't know John Candy ad- libbed his character's lines, but it makes sense, especially for the scene when he first meets Kevin's mom and the later scene when he's trying to comfort her that she's not a bad parent by pointing out that he and his bandmates are worse parents in comparison. In answer to the Drinker's question, Kevin's immediate family has five children: Buzz, Megan (Brown- haired girl who bawls out Kevin in the beginning for being helpless, and later scolds Buzz for not being more worried about Kevin), Linnie (Blonde girl who calls Kevin 'Les Incompetents'), Jeff (redhaired boy who calls Kevin "Such a disease," played by Michael Maronna who would go on to star on the magnificent Nickelodeon show "The Adventures of Pete and Pete"), and Kevin himself. The other kids seen in the family gathering scenes are all cousins.

Right in the opening scene of the movie there's a tiny part that speaks volumes about basic skill at the craft of making movies. Two seemingly throwaway lines about Kevin leaving his Micro Machines out and almost killing his aunt, and gluing his dad's new fish hooks together to make something. Goes by fast, didn't need to be there, but it actually does a lot. Builds Kevin's character as an impulsive but creative and resourceful kid, builds that relational tension between him and his family, and sets up a rewarding payoff in the climax when he uses those toys as traps for the Wet Bandits.
