Critically endangered Hangul herd seen on video in Kashmir

A herd of the critically endangered Kashmir stag or Hangul was captured on video this week. These animals are currently at the brink of extinction with just about 250 or so individuals left on the planet. ThePrint’s Sandhya Ramesh discusses the hangul and their history.

The Hangul (Cervus hanglu) is a species of deer native to Central Asia, there are three recognized subspecies of hangul: the Kashmir Hangul (Cervus hanglu hanglu), the Bactrian Hangul (Cervus hanglu bactrianus), and the Yarkand Hangul (Cervus hanglu yarkandensis), the closest living relative of the Hangul (Cervus hanglu) is the Elk or Wapiti (Cervus canadensis).

Major issue is Dogs and Nomadic Tribal people who displace the Hangul with their cattle. Hangul is not able to feed and roam freely . This is affecting the natural breeding tendencies as well. A lot of pressure is on remaining less than 100 Hangul in Dachigam . It is very hard for them to survive few more years in the wild. Their are barbed wires placed by army inside the park. Army should have rather covered the park from the outside and let the animals move freely inside. This also leads to the destruction of ecosystem of the sanctuary as a whole.. Dogs kill a lot of Hanguls.
