actually after Tarja was gone, Tuomas restructured the band's vocal model to be more mainstream, and away from a classical approach, insisting that Tarja was not subject to duplication
@dimitriid4 жыл бұрын
You are correct: Nightwish was initially a band pretty much largely built around Tarja's vocals and her dark, operatic style. However quick trip down history lane: by the time Tarja and Nightwish went their separate ways they had released their "Once" record which was a market switch in style. Yes, Ghost Love Score it's on this record and very much reminiscent of the older style of their songs but this is the record that also had songs like "Dark Chest of Wonders", "Romanticide" or "I Wish I had an Angel" that gave lot more space to Marco's male vocals and was decisively more metal/rock influenced sound. After Nightwish finds a new vocals Tuomas and the band decide to hire Anette Olsen which was basically a rock singer and *just* a rock singer. Don't get me wrong she is an awesome rock singer in her own right but the opera style was basically completely removed for a couple of records. This is a direction they were already moving towards but now dived into headfirst completely. Even the last 2 records with Floor do not feature the older style of portraying the almost entirely operatic vocals behind and Floor is leaning far more heavily into her rock singer style (Even though Floor is technically capable of doing just operatic style if needed be, she is no Tarja but she is still classically trained as part of her background too) So there's a tale of 3 different incarnations of Nightwish as a band so far if you ask me.

The bassist Marko Hietala's vocals are essential part of NW. He is on vocals in Pink Floyd cover 'High Hopes' 2005 live. I love the song. 'Islander', live in Tampere 2015, his own song, is an other example of his vocal skills. One of my definite favorites is '7 days to the wolwes', at Wembley Arena 2015, Marko and Floor on vocals. 'Weak fantasy', Tampere 2015 another one, among others, showing how well their voices blend. And then there's the masterpiece of the keyboardist and mastermind behind NW, Tuomas Holopainen - 90% or so of NW material, (compositions, lyrics, arrangements) is his - 'The Poet and the Pendulum', Wembley 2015. Usually recommended to be saved for later in ones journey into NW music. Should know the story behind it before listening to it. I would recommend a video version with lyrics. One more: 'Shudder before the beautiful', the opener at Wembley, and in Tampere, if my memory serves me right. I believe so. What an opener. Love it!

I would definitely recommend The Poet and the Pendelum. I think that that song is in compsition wise best song in Nightwish cataloque. If you're looking for something quite recent, it would be cool to see what you think of the song "Music" from their latest album. Or, if you're up for another epic-length song, I'm sure many people will recommend "The Greatest Show On Earth" - maybe another one of the live recordings. A little older, but still new enough to be written for Floor, and it's really something else.
@Trevor212304 жыл бұрын
The Greatest Show On Earth is definitely, as of yet, Tuomas' Magnum Opus; his Greatest Work. Although to be honest, I think Endlessness gives it a strong run for its money in the composition department; it's a legitimate masterpiece of musical engineering despite being much shorter and lacking the multiple segments. The it illustrates the neverending nature of time as an emotion evoked by a continuous build-up to a crescendo that falls apart even before it beings, only to return seconds later to the same build-up, again without a befitting crescendo until the very last few words of the song was nothing short of masterfully conceived and perfectly executed. It lets you feel a set of emotions rarely available to us short-lived humans.

I definitely prefer the older Nightwish. Not just for Tarja, but the style is more symphonic metal. With Floor, just like her main vocal style shows, it has some pop/rock style combined with the previous style, but the symphonic part tuned down significantly.
@Zoey-K-14 жыл бұрын
As far as Nightwish being “a band around operatic singing,” that was true of the Tarja era, as that was her specialty. After she left, Anette was the singer and she was a pop/rock vocalist who struggled when performing the Tarja era songs. Floor, the current singer, is very versatile and can sing pretty much anything. To hear songs written during the Floor era, try “Music,” from their new album, or “Shudder Before the Beautiful” live at Wembley, or “The Greatest Show On Earth” live at Tampere. Marko, the bass player, does a lot of singing with the band. “The Islander” live at Tampere is a good one that he sings lead on, while “Romanticide” live at Wacken is a good example of he and Floor trading vocals. Oh, and “Phantom of the Opera” is not an original song for them. It’s a cover of the title song from the immensely popular musical of the same name.

Endlessness is fascinating from a composition point of view. The choice to illustrate the neverending nature of time as an emotion evoked by a continuous buildup to a climax that ebbs away before it even begins, only to return seconds later to another buildup, again without a befitting crescendo until the very last few words of the song was nothing short of masterfully executed. Personally, I was aware of Nightwish in their eary days, and liked a few songs that popped up on the radio - they dropped off my radar though with Anette, the second singer, and I only stumbled onto them again with Floor - and I seriusly think Floor is the singer that suits their music the best. She is so versitile, plus she is classically trained, able to sing operatically too. If the two songs you've heard is this, and Ghost Love Score, then you haven't heard their heavier stuff. I'd recommend" Song of Myself" from the Waken 2013 show. Link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooLYZoSgnsl7jck And/or "Romanticide" from the same show: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKvCaIJ5eLafjtU And/or "Yours Is An Empty Hope" from 2015 Live at Wembley: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKqvpIhthphmac0 That song also features Floor doing a proper fry scream in the chorus. If you are interested at their most recent material, then I'd suggest "Shoemaker" kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJvTkHecq6-co8k Floor gets to show off her classical training towards the end there. The song is about Eugene Merle Shoemaker, an American geologist and one of the fouders of planetary science, who died in 1997 in a car crash. Earlier he was a candidate to become one of the Apollo astronauts, but a health condition ruled him out - it had been a dream of his to be the first geologist on the Moon. In 199, some of his ashes were carried to the moon by the Lunar Prospector space probe, and his meorial capsule bears a quote from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, which also is featured in the song. Shoemaker is the only human who's remains have been placed on a celestial body outside the Earth.

I don't really want to compare or put her against Floor, especially since she wasn't a replacement for her, but actually their third vocalist. But as someone who grew up with Nightwish, it just was not the same anymore after she was out. I could not even enjoy the old tracks anymore after they broke up. And yes, she always was singing like this, wiki says "She is a lyric soprano and has a vocal range of three octaves.", and I think they more or less created the operatic metal genre, but the more general symphonic metal already existed with bands like Therion, and I think Within Temptation also formed around that time. After the breakup with Tarja, bands like Epica, After Forever or Xandria grew pretty rapidly, kinda filling that gap of a lot of disappointed Nightwish fans. And those crying / eye rolling girls shots are cut in I think. I am pretty sure they are from older Nightwish footage from back then, when they were infamously known for causing orgasms in teen girl filled stadiums, and I am pretty sure those shots were part of that. At least I think to remember those scenes from long before the breakup.

Nightwish is not based on operatic voices, in fact, they had to adapt to it and didn't even know that Tarja began singing in operatic style because she wasn't when they met her. And this song is just a cover of an opera and not suited to categorize the bands tendencies. It just happens that the operatic voices work as well with their music. And the heavy operatic composition was reduced significantly right after the second album. Tarja kept singing operatic because that's what she can do.

@@y.a.s9198 Yes an none of that is related to Tarja singing opera or not. The music was going to be a mix of classical and metal regardless of Tarja being there or not. And no Tarja is not known for versatility in her vocals classic is pretty much her tool. And at the end of the day her popularity is mainly inherited from Nightwish.

@@aegonthedragon6341 That's not true. They switched to metal because of Tarjs's voice. Tarja can do much more thsn classical, and no one gave af about Floor until she joined Nightwish.

@@nicholew350 By that logic I can also say no one would give af about Tarja if it wasn't for Nghtwish. At least try to make sense in your arguments.

@@nicholew350 Floor was already very well known with After Forever and by that time she was already quite a superior singer.

I find Tarja to be extremely gifted... and extremely boring and one dimensional which is why I was never a fan. If you compare the same songs with Tarja and Floor you'll see the songs coming to life with Floor. Case and point - Ghost Love Score.
