Around 44 mins in they question what did they do in this campaign. In campain 1 and 2, they had a lot of side bits and quests where they saved people, beat horrifying beasts, stopped false gods and things. This game they have been very focused on stopping Ludinus this whole time. M9 steam rolled so many baddies and stopped a war and made friends with a war criminal before ultimately finding out about Lucien and stopping him. This game, they have been chasing the big bad the whole time and been unable to beat them yet. They haven't done a million different things because they are focusing on stopping 1 MAJOR thing

I think that in this campaign they aren't the heroes from the light or shadow, they are just a group of pawns dealing with something way above their pay rate. It's bittersweet to me, I can't really explain why. I guess I liked the freedom MN had in their future but I feel BH are stuck to this fate due to one all powerful wizard.

Which I think for how short of a time they've actually been together and how different they all are and the ticking time bombs they all have living inside of them it makes sense that they would have to take some time out to sort out that stuff

Can't really blame them for not accomplishing much. Much love to Matt, but the main story of the campaign has been super disconnected from most of the player characters and their backstories. They haven't really had many cool arc villains they've even had the chance to confront either. C1 wasn't perfect, but the players had WAY more actionable and straightforward goals to accomplish.

@Scott-ql2kx 100%. Everything was on track until the party left Jrusar. That's when everything fell apart, and Matt's been struggling to piece it back together ever since. C2 completely fell apart halfway through, but that was COVID's fault. Matt clearly cut a massive chunk of story so that he could fast-track the ending after quarantine, but c3 feels like everything Matt had planned completely fell apart once the cast fixated on going to Ruidus

In defense of Taliesen's thing with the primordial fire chunk, I got the impression of the classic anime "Oh, this won't work and will probably kill you (but you, as a protagonist, can totally do it and it'll work and be awesome because you're a main character) so don't do it" i was shocked when ashton got a nerf from that.

Glad I'm not the only one who read it like this. I totally thought Matt meant him to do that (or at least wanted to put it on the table as a legitimate high risk high reward option for him), especially since the whole Titan stuff was specifically tied to Ashton's backstory. It does fit Fearne too, since she has a nature and fire theme going on, but she's also Fey, Ruidusborn and has a powerful hag as her adoptive grandmother, so I would have thought her big powerup would likely rather come from some other source. I do understand why the PLAYERS were mad at Taliesin for risking it without talking it through with the group and without having most of them around to help, but I thought it didn't make much sense for the characters how mad they were at Ashton and how badly they abused him verbally and physically afterwards for a whole episode. Felt like player anger overshadowing what the characters would likely do. I mean, your (supposed) friend just tried something risky to become more powerful to be better in your common fight against the big bad and almost died in the process and you react by punching him, berating him and questioning his loyalty?! Seriously?

@@chrisrudolf9839 I think lots of people felt that way (it's been a while but if I remember correctly Ashton asked a god or the tree or something if he should do it and they were kinda like "I don't know, are you ok with the bad stuff that could come from it messing up?" instead of flat out telling him not to do it) but the toxic positivity crowd bullied everyone upset at the mixed messages.

I had the same reaction as Sam to "quandaries" not being a synonym for "questions" and was kinda glad that he said something and confirmed the definition. But yikes, that really took a turn after Dani pointed out it was Kyle's writing. I think Sam was about to move on, although he had gone on longer than necessary in a condescending tone of voice, and said "we'll fix it in post", so he'd already put his foot in his mouth. I wonder if Dani was looking for a way to jump in and stop Sam before he put his foot in any farther, instead of just talking off-air. Or mostly to call out Sam for the way he said it. I think in the ended giving Kyle a chance to say something ended up being for the best, and Sam comes off looking like the asshole (which he can take when he deserves it), and it was funny. Using a fancier-sounding word that doesn't actually mean the right thing is something Matt Mercer does, too. Mostly it's text he's improvising, so mostly it's good that he just carries on instead of correcting himself when the intended meaning is clear enough, if he notices a case where that happened. (I think on the whole I like Matt's current style better than if he just used simpler more boring words more of the time, if occasional odd word choices are the price we have to pay for interesting scene-setting narration and so on.) Matt's been stuck on "alight" (when a bird lands on something, or dismounting a vehicle) instead of "lit" (when a light or flame is on) for a long time now. "alight" as an adjective can also mean that a torch was just lit or is being lit, or that something is on fire. Or e.g. "the sky was alight with stars". So anyway, that style is maybe what inspired Kyle to give flowery language a try.

I never comment, but I had to this time. This has been one of my favorite episodes of 4-Sided Dive. The edit and some of the things that were left in it made it very fun (and much love to Kyle as always). As a DGA assistant director myself, I appreciate seeing the BTS edits left in the cut and makes me curious as to what has been left on the cutting room floor previously. Thanks for bringing me sanity when I need to escape my own set life.

From what I can tell, Braius' belief is: 'None of the gods actually care about mortals, at least Asmodeus and the other Betrayers are honest about it.' (I mean if the gods really did care about Braius, Bahamut wouldn't just let his life be ruined because a tiefling and a goblin snuck past him with a can of spray paint, right?)

And it being stated practically straight out that it was never an option to begin with kind of puts the kibosh on any of it. You can respect someone for being honest but it's not a basis for trust and faith. If you are simply a means to an end, a tool to be used and thrown away, than there is no basis for any devotion. So the trust, faith and devotion Braius demonstrates is paradoxical.

All depends on semantics and instances. I am 100% of the belief that Nana Mori intervened when the Weave Mind showed up. Which is after they went through the backdoor. On top of that they are, as far as I understand it, going to the moon again to get Ludinus. When does the deal stop? Does FCG's willing sacrifice mitigate the fact that they died? Though personally it doesn't feel like Matt is giving that deal any consequence. Or at least he doesn't want it to interfere with the campaign. The consequences might just be settled afterword.

Speaking of Monk, so in 2000 there was this short lived *Invisible Man* series on the Sci Fi channel, which I followed on and off until its demise in 2002. The primary draw was the main character's sidekick, who was hilarious and clearly meant to be a "Dean Stockwell from Quantum Leap" type but more buddy cop coded. Well, it gets cancelled and then Monk premiers that same year and FOR YEARS I thought the "Dean Stockwell-type" actor from Invisible Man was Tony Shalhoub, who jumped ship after the previous series ended. YEARS. And let me tell you, finding out an actor you really liked ISN'T now the star of a multi-award winning show but instead just a working actor who's had small parts in various things over the years...heartbreaking. Paul Ben-Victor, look him up. He's been in a million things, including - ironically - Monk.

Hopefully Laudna will break records and be the first undead warlock to somehow separate completely from her patron, and live. Whether it be through the gods, or something entirely brand new, etc. Because my GOD, has she earned it. After all those decades of being manipulated, abused and utterly terrorized by Delilah (to say nothing of new details emerging of just how horrific her own death actually was), Laudna deserves nothing more than to live her life with Imogen entirely free of her abuser.

Yeah I think separating completely from patrons is becoming a relatively common thing for warlocks. That said, I won't deny that Laudna is a special case, considering she's essentially an undead thrall that just took back control from the necromancer that summoned her, if she is eventually able to completely separate herself from her patron that will be especially impressive given her circumstances.

I remember them finding Ludinus' notes, where he was obsessing over finding the true name of the Raven Queen. I suspect he did just that, and now he reincarnates when he dies. Ludinus was evasive in his language when asked how he has lived so long that makes me suspect he wasn't always an elf.

Matt did say in C3E102 that what BH actually saw didn't include the prologue or epilogue, that it started with the gods setting foot on Aeor. That means also omitting the camp part, not just the pre-history part where Tengar collapsed. I was listening carefully for that since in the previous 4SD with Brennan, Laura told him that Matt said they didn't see the prologue. (Brennan was very surprised :/)

I think all of Sam's questions are exactly why the Matron of Ravens exists. She probably talks to most of them and sends them in the right direction. Editing to add a thought, what if they go on to defeat Predathos but someone who has to replace him to control his pent-up power. Imogen steps up and becomes a new Predathos. Fast-forward to a dejected Laudna telling someone her GF turned into the moon.
