This is drastic and crazy after giving away drugs

People should be suspicious. We go from giving away drugs and catch-and-release justice to a system that could potentially be used to effectively incarcerate people in a way that bypasses the legal system? It kinda looks like they've created a problem that will make people desperate for a solution so I'd like to thoroughly examine the implications of their supposed solution.

This is a no win. As a tax payer, i do not like to pay for druggies, alchoholics, etc. etc. when i can not get good personal healthcare. Basically taxpayer money is used to pay for drug trearment of drug addicts and taxpayers do without medical care

So the problem isn't addiction, it's people wanting to drop out of society and be a homeless drug user. They admit they will just use again even if forced to get clean.

So folks, if not mandatory treatment, what is your alternative plan. Have you looked at our current situation lately. We have junkies flaked out all over our country. This can’t continue for us as a responsible nation.

The only solution is involuntary care and the activists enabling drug abuse and crime know it. Anyone with common sense knows it. CTV was promoting the drug enabling consumption site in Yaletown just last year despite it ruining an entire block so they are not a reliable narrator on this subject.

Like on so many other issues it is time for the “experts” to shut up and quit doing so much damage. They have nothing to gain and everything to lose financially if there was a decrease in addiction rates. Hate to speak in cliches but it really is time for a common sense approach. The problem will be paying for it. There is a well maintained but abandoned small town in BC called Kitsault that may be able to house many of these unfortunate people. Riverview would work as well. What I’d argue for his getting as many into voluntary and involuntary care as cheaply and quickly as possible. It would be great if BC could go from being a nutcase on this issue to being the one to innovate a good partial solution.

It makes sense to be suspicious when a party does such an about face. They effectively created chaos to motivate people to accept this so I want to know very thoroughly the scope of their power to effectively involuntarily commit people.

It works in Japan Different situations, but the results still speak for themselves, I doubt it would ever work as well in America or Canada as it does in Japan, cause the landmass makes a huge difference, but it would help curve the problem, the handhold approach doesn't work with addiction, it actually makes it worse
@capresti3537

Nonsense. Study after study proves involuntary commitment from drug addiction or so called mental illness does not work and makes them worse. The same all over the world.

So we went from allowing open drug use, while having inadequate voluntary rehab facilities, paired with catch-and-release justice to mandatory rehab? Why not fix the justice system and have adequate voluntary rehab centers? I'm a bit suspicious of this arc.

Addicts don't want housing. They want more drugs. Listen, the way I see it you have two options -- get the help you need voluntarily or the gov't will do it for you. Tired of allowing 4500 people to dictate what the rest of us do. If you can't be a productive member of society, then be prepared for the consequences. The rest of us had to put up with their garbage, now they can deal with ours. Shape up or ship out, the free ride is over!
