Keep an eye on Fargeat for original screenplay at the Oscars. 7 out of 9 times a woman was nominated for best director, she went home with either best director (Bigelow, Zhao, Campion) OR best original screenplay (Campion, Coppola, Fennell, Triet). Only 2 female director nominees went home empty-handed (Wertmüller, Gerwig).

if you read The Substance script, you see how much it doesn't matter that there's not a lot of dialogue. Nearly everything you see on the screen is in the script, which is pretty amazing. and there is plenty of dialogue anyway

Directing a big budget musical that ends up being popular and acclaimed is not easy to do. I don't know what the problem with Chu's direction is for some people. But, you know, even Rob Marshall didn't win for best picture victor "Chicago" several moons ago. So maybe there's a bias against musicals now, but there shouldn't be.

There is no bias against musicals anymore, not when they're done by Master artists that are honored for their craft and the fact that they've been in the industry for as long as they have been. Wicked director was the best thing I could say about last night. It was so unexpected, but at the same time, I did kind of expect it because Curtis Choice Awards went absolutely crazy for Wicked in terms of nominations. This still positions Wicked as a serious best picture threat despite no nomination, this means he was in contention for best director and the academy knows they screwed up and will correct it by possibly giving Wicked more Oscars to make up for the EP fiasco.

The Golden Globes really threw such a wrench into the awards predictions, that Critics Choice said oh that's cool.... hold my statue, we can do even better. Honestly though, I'm here for the chaos. The last few years have started to become a bit TOO predictable, I mean when you already know who's gonna win everything ahead of time save for a few techs... it's not as exciting. This year, we'll all be tuning in because we won't really know what the F to expect from half these categories anymore. Especially if BAFTA or SAG ends up giving us even more surprises. I could see Timothee potentially winning both, which would make Best Actor a big question mark. Make (the) Oscars Exciting Again!

Basically, Oscar does not know how to pick the 4th/5th place nominees. They did not have CCA winners at hand during voting period because of the fires. That's why we see so many CCA winners are not even nominated this year. Jon M Chu for Directing, Challengers for Editing and Score, A Real Pain for Picture. They gave those spots to EP.

They gave best director to the guy that deserved some recognition and wasn't gonna get it anywhere else. The fact that he wasn't even nominated anywhere else may have given him the award. This goes to show that a work worthy of recognition will get it one way or another. Good fo the Critics for balancing things out. And good for Chu. I'm not a Wicked fanatic, the movie was my first contact with that universe and I had a lot of fun watching it, even though I'm always highly skeptical of musicals.

@@panchito18 It's a reach to compare her with Jamie lets be real. Jamie has overdue narrative + attaches to a movie that swept the Oscars unlike Wicked (tho Stephanie deserved that award). The only advantage Ariana has at this moment is neither herself nor the movie itself but EP recent backlash. While the controversy obviously will affect EP I don't think the voters will go that far to punish everyone related to it.

It's unlimited. It could potentially win best picture at the Oscars just like the shape of water if it gets an editing win and upsets there. What if it does? It could win best picture without director, screenplay or acting. It would be unprecedented as the rare fantasy film to win the Oscar for best picture. People don't realize that the shape of water was also a fantasy film and it could happen.

Because it's HARD to make Wicked or Dune. Wanna try handle 200mil budget and still make a great movie? When i saw the clip of "dancing through life" in Wicked (the library scene) my jaws dropped. Mise-en-scène is master class, state of the art - reason Hollywood should exist. I personally show extra love for comedy and blockbuster films in awards season cus both of the genre is so underrated.

Let's bring something up. Wicked could be like the shape of water and win best picture without screenplay, director or any acting performances. It could actually be that way. It just came to me now that this could be the outcome. Anora winning here for best picture will probably be the only win at a major televised ceremony that this film will have. @@benjamintillema3572 Actually it didn't. The controversy didn't surface until after the Globes premiered. This means the week of of the globes, the critics Choice Awards had finished recording. Then you know about the controversy until after it was finished recording. The voting block and the winner voting had already ended by the point before the controversy came out. Now that it's out, Zoe will lose everything, this film will lose everything moving forward and no one wants to touch it. It's over for EP and there wasn't much enthusiasm at CCA anyway.
