i'm always so annoyed that these festival movies don't have trailers yet
@George_Nakhle19 сағат бұрын
Most of them don't even have distributors yet. These things take time
@pb.j.175318 сағат бұрын
You need a distributor to pay for that, cause creating a good trailer costs thousands. Movies go to festivals to find a distributor.

We need to talk more about Barry Jenkins discovering so many emerging talents. Aftersun, All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt, Fire Inside and now Sorry Baby... damn what a run of people he's lifted up so far
@heymistercarter.21 сағат бұрын
Right. In fact, it seems like the only project he’s been involved with that didn’t turn out well was Mufasa: The Lion King. Though, I don’t blame him for that, since it sounds like he was more of a director-for-hire on that one (sorta like the Ang Lee HULK movie), and that his wheelhouse is more in smaller indie productions rather than big tentpole blockbusters. But the stuff that Pastel Pictures (his production company) touches really turns into gold.

I liked the film! Truly stayed with me. Can see it for Best Picture, Director, Actress, Supporting Actor, and Original Screenplay in awards season. The last scene was so emotional for me. Past Lives-level unforgettable heavy hitter.

I’ve seen people compare her work to Phoebe Waller-Bridge, especially FLEABAG. I haven’t seen that, so I can’t really comment on it. One name I thought of, though, is Martin McDonagh, in terms of how this movie is able to effectively shift the tone between comedy and drama and back again, while making both work effectively and in a realistic way.

No chance of awards buzz for Sorry Baby?
@MagnitudeReviews20 сағат бұрын
I think the strongest aspect of the film itself is it’s original screenplay. That’s the main thing I’d personally nominate it for. Maybe editing, lead actress, and director for it’s best picture nom package. But the screenplay is the shining star of the film.

When I saw the initial reviews pop up last week I rushed to grab an online screening, which added another to my already full slate. But I’m so glad I did, by far my favorite of the festival. Glad A24 got their hands on it, literally the perfect movie for them.
@heymistercarter.22 сағат бұрын
This was one of my most anticipated of the festival, and it’s by FAR my favorite thing I saw there. I eagerly await whatever Victor does next, and I’m SO happy A24 picked this up!

I wish this film was in the World Cinema Dramatic category rather than the Premiere category. I would have immediately purchased a digital screener for the film, but alas that was not an option. I hope this film gets US distribution, but based on No Other Land's lack of US distribution... I am fearful I may never see this film, which saddens me.

Are you guys gonna talk about the newest controversy of Emilia Perez and Karla Sofía Gascón or not ? You guys cannot denying this hot topic at all. 🤨
@joelanthonylim6792Күн бұрын
They’ll probably mention it in passing in their next prediction video but they never usually cover stuff like that anymore. They prefer to focus at the ceremony and the awards. Let’s not forget in 2022 they deliberately took out any reaction or mention of the Will Smith slap from their reaction video because they wanted the focus to remain on who won that night.

Thank you for the review :) We tend to have our films straightforward when we know our message is being directed at the west. I believe it’s because we so rarely are able to tell our own stories and are so easily pushed away and shot down by decades of dehumanization and scapegoating. So when we finally have someone’s attention, to be rich in metaphor and to be artfully esoteric is at the cost of our story reaching / being understood by those who never really pay attention to us as humans. I think we need to convince people we are people just like them first, before we can be artsy (for lack of a better word). It reminds me of a modern Palestinian poem by Noor Hindi. It’s called “Fuck Your Lecture on Craft, My People Are Dying” which I think echos my feelings about why the film is straightforward. It’s a short and really formative poem for me, everyone should check it out. Thank you for the review again. Take care

It sounds like a film that's trying to be a persuasive essay rather than an artistic project. From an outsider's perspective, I would never go to a film to learn about facts, even a documentary (which is driven by a filmmaker using the tools of editing to emotionally convince you of facts), much less so a fictional drama. It isn't the correct medium or a rigorous approach, and I hope nobody does that for this film. It is best to seek out a mix high-quality sources with different focuses that have proven themselves to be reliable and provide all relevant information.

Before watching this, it's easy to think we know a lot about Trump but I found the story of his rise to power, the influence of his mentor and the 3 rules he adopts quite enlightening. It was also surprising to see there was an almost 'normal' Trump before he became successful and learned from his mentor. Is that true I wonder?

Just saw this movie. The first 2/3rds is wonderful nuanced character development . The last 1/3rd of the movie has the characters, especially the father change in ways that make no sense at all. One thing that contributes to this nonsensical character change is several holes in the plot that I can only conclude were left on the cutting room floor. SPOILER ALERT: STOP READING IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE! There was no motive for the youngest daughter to take the gun. Why? Also the daughter had no knowledge of the gun let alone where it was. And if she did take it, it would have been at night with her parents sleeping in the room. Another problem, when the oldest daughter discovers that her sister has the gun, she doesn't immediately tell the dad or the mom. What was the motive for this? There is none. So, a good movie with a terrible ending.

The very simple truth is this: voters only watched "I'm Still Here" in enough numbers AFTER the Golden Globes win of Torres. This has the direct implication that for all other awards you so like to call "important precursors" only a negligible number of voters had seen it in time to nominate it, hence, it was not nominated. In comes the Globes, and the win. Boom. That got voters watching the film, and as it is a fantastic piece of art, they loved it. They voted like crazy for it WHERE THEY COULD, and that is the Oscars. So it made 3 nominations (I truly thought 5, adapted screenplay and director too). And it will pull a Parasite, and win all 3. Mark my words.
@benjamintillema357219 сағат бұрын
If it won all 3 then it would be more similar to CODA. Definitely possible, especially now that Emilia Perez is flaming out.

Remember American Fiction? How absurd was it to think that nobody in that movie was getting the problem of a stereotyped view of the black community? Well, that is literally you in this moment with Emilia Perez. At this point the movie could have been called "Chimichangas" and you will be clapping.

This is definitely your worst take, but it helped me understand why people love that cruel, insulting, superficial, and mediocre movie. You criticized that the seed of a sacred view is not "Challenging", does not tell you anything new, and gives you one side of the story, GUESS WHAT? WE DO NOT NEED TO KNOW THE EMOTIONS OF DICTATORS OR NARCOS. You only want foreign pain to be a spectacle.

Mike Leigh and the absolutely fantastic cast have made a masterpiece! There were so many psychological elements that mirrored my lived experience, that I kept wondering exactly where Pansy stopped and my own mother began! That aggressively stuck character who traps everyone around her-into the emotional glue trap of her own searing and violent pain - was expertly captured! Absolutely loved it. A tragic tale that makes you laugh at times and then rips you up with pain. Just brilliant!!
