lot of people instead of looking at this great movie for itself, get overboard about so called 'code' and how sturges' allegedly sneaked past it. in fact, funny thing about 'code' is that almost everybody making movies for main studios who wanted to sneak past it did so easily. just look at every other movie from era . and those that did not break 'code, did not want to do it. industry administered 'code' was mainly an anti competition device to prevent small producers making money and fragmenting market by showing lot of flesh and exploiting sex as was beginning to happen in early 30s.

I never considered that angle. It was a complex situation , and I always wondered about how the wink-wink complicity worked.
