This steel is not S35VN on the knife (CEO - model) you’re reviewing. The steel on this base model is 4116 stainless steel. (like AUS 8 / kinda like 8cr) The model that comes w/ S35VN is the Carbon Fiber version that is almost double the $.

The carbon fiber model is S35VN only, this model has options for 4116 stainless or S35VN, I'm pretty sure this is the S35VN model as all the retailers I've checked list it as such and the one I bought (listed as S35VN) sharpens similar to other S35VN blades I've had. Not 100% certainty but good enough for me until I have a better method of testing blade steel.

@@theknifefanatic7146 - Seriously though, it is something that has always bugged me a bit. How would any of us mooks be able to tell exactly what we have been sold? I mean the retailer says it’s “CPM SuperXXX” steel but that is less than certain, especially in this day and age. Less likely that the manufacturer would give out incorrect information but scams abound, and most blades are not really made by the “manufacturer.” These days the companies and factories that actually make the blades are located… well, in a place not particularly well known for business ethics. The most sophisticated among us might be able to give an opinion based on things like grain structure, hardness, spark trails, and rust resistance. Almost no one I know - there is one weird exception - is going to break their new knife to look at the grain size, or trash a shiny new blade on a belt sander to see how it sparks. Absolutely no one I know has a Rockwell Hardness tester. Besides, even if some amateur metallurgist you know were to give an assessment, it’s still a SWAG. There are so many variables that affect how a steel performs. I always think of that guy, Alex, whose YT channel is OUTDOORS55, sitting for hours slicing cardboard and rope with expensive versus cheep knives to compare edge retention ending up with equivocal results. Is a poorly heat treated supersteel better than decently treated 440c stainless? Probably not, but it will cost you a heck of a lot more of your knife budget. I kind of wish there were a knife industry watchdog that would buy knives at random and do real metallurgical analysis using mass spectrometry and whatever other scientific stuff. Ha! Now that I think of it, that might work as a KZbin channel.
