I carried a recon 1 for 5 years now, beat the hell out of it still works, but the reason they get blade play is because you removed the steel liners and the pins deform the G10. The recon 1 is the flagship for cold steel, start putting the steel liners back on the knife.

So this testing shows which knife makes the better hammer or the better crowbar? I still don't understand how gross abuse of a weapon relates to its intended real world use. I would more interested in depth penetration, cutting test against clothed targets and bone strikes. How fast they can be deployed and used in an everyday situation. How they fit the hand ect. This testing you do here is kind of like overloading a cartridge to see which manufacturers rifle or handgun fails first. I own a Couple of CRKT blades and I find they are excellent knives for the intended use .
@KripkeSaul5 жыл бұрын
You know, CS knives would probably lose this, that's why.
@jeanbabtisteclamence30185 жыл бұрын
You don’t understand the idea of a test. Most knives as long as they’re sharp and same length and relative same blade shape will do the same shit to bone and cloth. No shit, you wouldn’t do any of this to your knife in every day use. This is SIMPLY to show how robust and or tough a knife is in it’s design. No one here is saying CRKT is shit, so calm down. Also it’s not like “overloading” a cartridge which is a valid test anyways, it’s more like abusing a gun by, slamming it, dropping it, getting dirt in it and all out abusing it. Wether that is via rapid continuous fire or dropping it into a mud puddle. Would you normally fire 10 mags in 3 minutes? No. Would you usually throw it into a mud puddle? No. The point of the TEST is to see how far you can push something, UNTIL it fails. OBVIOUSLY you would never do this. I don’t understand this argument from Cold Steel haters, the argument of “well I would never bang my knife against the concrete.” Well no shit. And you’d probably never through your AR out of a car window. But that is the point of a test.

These tests are pretty impressive... I will admit at first I was a bit skeptical, and what I mean is I believed and was confident that the Tri-Ad was far superior as a lock then other locking mechanisms.... but when I heard people talk about how much weight it could hold and abuse the knives could take. ESPECIALLY with out steel liners and other weight adding (but perceived requirements for strength and durability). I was and still am not a huge fan of AUS8, but now that CS knives have XHP. I will be adding a number CS knives to my collection and rotation in the near future. The strength and performance of the Tri-AD lock are almost to the point of making you go "OK wheres the trick???? there is no way the knife can be that strong!" but there is not way to dispute the results and in terms of strength in relation to the weight of the knives.... these tests speak for themselves and have really increased my interest in CS knives more so then it was before. And I was a fan even before these tests(love the videos where you guys are chopping things, throwing knives, cutting bottles, just all around cool knife porn) But these test video has only gone to increase my interest and just wanted to say I really enjoy these testing videos as well as it seems you guys really listen to your customers. Offering better steels options is what I know a lot of us wanted and were asking for and I think is going to really put CS on a whole other level in terms of quality, price and weight that is going to be VERY hard for other companies to compete with. Great job on the videos and the knives.... A lot of knives that I though would give the Tri-AD a run for its money FAILED MISERABLY.... and sadly I own some of those knives that failed but I am glad that I now know the limitations, as well as I know now a better option. Again thanks for the videos and the fantastic products.

I own one of these and will say that the construction of the otanashi is inherently weaker. This is mainly due to the fact it is a frame lock. They were trying for reduced weight and a very slim profile, so the other side is G-10 only, no liner. This is a knife meant to deal mortal puncturing wounds, that is the purpose of the blade geometry, a very looong taper. It's not a general purpose knife. This is my backup knife meant with only one purpose. I have many brands I've bought but I love my CS knifes, they're tank tough and sharp enough to satisfy any surgeon.

weigh in on which is best xl vs large (forget medium) isnt the xl more of a liability to open in an emergency? cons: 1. you need more space for the 5.4" blade to swing out 2. need more force for people with smaller and weaker hands 3. longer handle has extra length that can also be grabbed by your attacker in a struggle. If your hands take up all the handle, he has nothing to grab except the blade is this worth the extra length? i think not
@MementoMori10018 жыл бұрын
I agree with you that its harder for people with smaller hands to deploy it. when it comes to knife fight it depends on your tactics. a longer reach is a clear advantage in a close combat. the extra length of the handle is acceptable. remember that short swords and even the knife of samurais have like 2-3" allowance in the handle. the reason for this is because you don't want to accidentally slipped and loss your knife. also your opponent can grab your wrist and their instinct will tell them to do so,because no one would risk losing fingers because they thought they've grabbed the handle.
@trap-du3hd8 жыл бұрын
first reach also includes the length of the arm so a 3 inch of difference is not much. second the advantage of reach is relevant to how much reach an opponent has: a tall guy would benefit less from the XL because he already has more reach than most people, third, reach isnt important in self defense. the attacker has to get close to make the first stab. weather you block his stab or not he is close enough to counter stab him with a short knife. its possible to block a thrust or slash but he cant block a counter stab, he is exposed. even in mutual combat they have to come close to stab or cut you. in most knife fights, its counter stabs that finish the fight. similar to boxing. the length of the blade is more important however. it decides if you reach a vital organ and how deep you reach it. the nice wide blade on the clip point would cut a gaping incision. So the XL would definitely be more handy if the downsides are "acceptable" as you put it.
Big deal the crkt is still more lethal.. it's a weapon not a utility blade.. I have both knives the recon is obviously more durable but the crkt deploys faster and blade is only designed to kill not baton sticks in your backyard while you play rambo.

Shaun I may be wrong, but I assume that the 130 pounds they show on the product video is the limit of its strength. The old product video showed a variety of spine whacks and negative thrusts (thrusts where the knife is angled edge out, spine in), all of which the Ti-Lite survived. But, a comparison between Cold Steel's liner lock and a "contender's" (I use that term very loosely) liner lock would make a good video. To make liner locks have acceptable strength, proper design, manufacture, and quality control is needed, and after seeing the inconsistency of "contenders", I would only trust Cold Steel's liner lock (and Leatherman's, but theirs only for its marketed purpose- utility).

Tip strength, prying with the knife, getting the knife nasty and being able to rinse it/clean it out without it rusting or failing, opening and closing with one hand easily, and also being able to comfortably use the knife hard with no hot spots. I have a Recon 1 tanto and the liner lock won't lock on open properly anymore and I can even get cold steel on the phone website says send it in but don't know if they will repair or the cost , I have a crkt m21-14 and it is been through edc with me just as the Recon and is tuff as hell , crkt at least has customer service

the recon 1 in liner lock is discontinued like 10 years ago

It's not a liner lock it's a lockback
@BACCHUS7777 жыл бұрын
I believe the CRKT did quite well considering its very limited purpose and design.
@aaronfriedmann24885 жыл бұрын
No kidding.. Its designed as a combat knife, with an awesome blade BUT you can't deploy it fast enough with that small thumbstud. What were they thinking!??
@wEcUtBoTtLeS6 жыл бұрын
should have compared to a ti lite? thought that would be obvious but you knew the crkt would out perform.

Unfair test, framelock has 50% less handle material than a spine lock...in the strike zone at failure. For hand mobility, balance, slashing and penetration the otanashi noh ken is the most balanced, most intricate, and most lethal knife I have possessed in 45 years. You want this knife at your side when going hand to hand, mobility, grip and reach is excellent. I had a holdout 2, very slippery compared to the otanashi

where can I buy the cheapest most reliable recon 1 knife?

Love, LOVE my recon 1's!l!

Honestly why do they only test spine whacks/ over strikes which both test the knife's durability in terms of pivoting forward and closing. What about the knife's intended purpose, pressure against the blade? Why not test to see the durability of the blade to stay rigid and resist pivoting backwards and failing. Why not chopping? Hard pressure cutting?

because demko invented this lock and he wanted to show how tough it is.

Great videos! If a blade is advertised as " tactical" it should be strong as it can be because lives are probably at stake here. Please, please do a lock strength comparison between Spyderco Endura and C.S. Code 4 , cause those are my EDCs!
@michaelmist15289 жыл бұрын
This is not an average liner lock, but I will ask you to please test only strong locks not liner or frame locks. The Axis lock, Arc lock, and Compression lock are worthy opponents.

nutnfancy this is why I agree with TNP Cold Steels are lighter & stronger and now they have quality XHP there's no point in making folders. I wish you'd take some serious custom cutlery that's high priced like Me.... or Hi..... or St..... I'm not even going to release a folder unless it can top your guys test and I'd rather just pray that you guys make it for me!
@michaelmist15289 жыл бұрын
Hey maybe these tests will make CRKT rethink their designs and make better products.

If I was in an urban environment were i might need to (God forbid) fight with a knife. The crkt is probably superior. However from my time in the Marines I can confidently say the recon would excel much more in the field for utility use. I actually carried one for some time with the infantry. The only complaint is that the g10 is so grippy it makes getting it out of your camis a bitch.
@curlybill39669 жыл бұрын
Who does that to there knife anyway? The Noh Ken is a flesh only knife, at which it excels.
@rainmechanic9 жыл бұрын
The Otanashi Noh Ken is comparable to the CS Ti Lite series... Liner Locks designed as pure stabbing / penetration self defense knives.... If you wanted an equal comparison i would have compared two liner locks... Your's verse their's... It's highly doubtful there was a single person who watched this thinking a liner lock was going to give the Triad any problems here...

Lol. I would not have taken an Otashi Noh Ken on a deployment before your testing. It's a stabber, show piece, and a fondler. The Recon is a big working knife, and also a mediocre choice for tactical use. I think your comparison testing should involve REAL WORLD uses/abuses, not machines and weights. Stabbing and slashing soft/hard targets, opening cans, screw driving, and prying. Mechanically stressing out these knives to see which one breaks first is unrealistic. It's also really predictable and therefore boring.
@Jakelol19809 жыл бұрын
mwhich50 The Otanashi noh Ken is ment for killing not for showing off. Sure the lock on the Recon 1 is better but you wont know the difference when you get stabbed by the Otanashi noh Ken throu your west.
@mwhich509 жыл бұрын
I would not want to be in court trying to justify the use of deadly force with a Otanashi. The jury would shit themselves if it was brought into court as an exhibit. For me a real world stabber would be a fixed blade. Folders need to kept in a closed pocket to prevent dirt and sand from going into the pivot joint. You would have an opponents fixed blade sticking in your chest before you could even get your CRKT open:)
@Jakelol19809 жыл бұрын
mwhich50 Well its not made for the streets its made for combat and war zones so there is no reason to own one and EDC it but its sure cool as hell and i would EDC one :P Sure a fixed blade is better then a folder always but if you watch James Williams videos he got asked to make a folder that easily concealable and is a great stabber and slicer in the same knife that is why this knife is made. This knife is sort of as good a stabber get without being a fixed blade.

i dont even know why i bother to watch these, the triad lock is the strongest lock out there and is always going to win....it is fun to watch though
