I think another important thing to hit on is how hard you grip the reins. I've found that fearful/low confidence riders will get a death grip on the reins, while "clothes pinning" on their horse. A good rule of thumb is to think about holding 2 birds: you have to hold them firmly enough so that they can't fly away, but softly enough so that you don't squish them. That analogy really helps newer riders build empathy for their horse, since it can sometimes be easy to forget that you're essentially holding onto the horse's mouth.

I've been riding for a looong time, but I still made one of these mistakes just a little while ago. Everyone does. After I fell off the horse some weeks before christmas I was way to scared to get back in the saddle, but when I eventually did I started leaning a little forward, my teacher says that it's because people do that when they are scared, they try to protect themself with their arms, but it dosn't work that way on a horse. I galopped on my horse for the first time since I fell of some days ago, and it was amazing.

Reins are a HUGE problem when I teach, to help the rider position their hands and reins properly "they have to face their thumbs to the sky" (say that to them). Another problem I have noticed is their elbows can stick out, you have to "keep you elbows glued to your side" hope that help :) especially with younger ones

Hi Cally. I've just started riding at the grand old age of 65. Unfortunately older people are not so supple as youngsters and it becomes more of a problem to correct posture. Firstly I have a rounded back and to correct this takes a lot of effort to put right. To keep myself really upright and my shoulders back seems to need an incredible amount of energy. I'm aware that I'm very tense so this wont be helping either. How can I focus on posture and trying to relax at the same time. I feel that one is fighting the other. It takes so much effort to sit upright in the saddle that everyone of my muscles are taut. I've watched the videos and think that they are superb. I would love to visit your school and have lessons but I live in the uk and its rather a long way to travel. Keep the blogs up please you truly are a great help.

Marilyn Burtenshaw, this is going to sound very corny, but you should try yoga. Relearning posture, and relaxing breathing may really help your posture, and can also help in the saddle. When you train your mind to recognize when your body is tensing, you can take a few breaths and reposition your body, into a good posture, to help your muscles to relax. You don’t have to do so much yoga you’re bending yourself in what I like to call “unnatural positions”😁, but you can learn enough to help with your scoliosis. Best of luck to you! Hugs from across the ocean! 😉😁💖

When I had my first lesson I was 4 and I had just watched a Barbie princess movie the night before. The way the prince made the horse go was by snapping the reins... God bless that wonderful horse who was so patient with me through that first lesson and had every right to buck me off but didn't. 💙💙 My advice? Anything you've ever seen about horse back riding in a movie, forget it and leave it at the barn door! 😂

I've been riding 8 years and when I first started out I used to forget how to hold the reins. The thing that helps me was to pretend you have two of your favourite drinks in each hand and you don't want to spill them, this helps you to concentrate on the right hand positioning and later on will assist with balance and more control over the hands. Hope this helped :)☺️

I've learnt a lot from reading old horsemanship books especially Dennis Magner, who was working with horses about 150 years ago. He was an expert breaker and horseman, including that he trained a blind horse called Blind Billy to be a perfect riding horse. Back in the day, horses were transport so the emphasis was on making them reliable, but he had advice for riders as well. Sit up straight and tall in the saddle, (no hunching!), grip (to maintain contact) with your thighs and knees when in sitting gaits and use the knees as a pivot point in the rising trot. When sitting at the canter, trot etc, use your pelvis and gluteus maximus (bum muscles) to help maintain your seat, and learn to move freely through your waist and hips when in the saddle, practising looking backwards, twisting your spine both ways, leaning forwards, backwards, and to each side, so that eventually you can do these motions at all gaits without losing your seat. He also recommended learning to ride without stirrups, emphasizing that stirrups were there to help the rider's legs to maintain their proper position, and to balance, but that you shouldn't be relying on them to maintain your seat. He said this was a mistake and a dangerous one, at that, since you should be able to maintain your seat if you lose your stirrups, or you will fall! Time goes on, but horse and human anatomies have not changed. As a part of my riding, I do your "gymnastics" (windmills etc) and I also practise throwing and then regaining my stirrups, or throwing my stirrups then stopping my horse. Your videos have made me a better rider and I'd like to thank you today for all your hard work!

I’ve been riding for over 20 years, and all of these examples are very familiar. To all the newer riders, do not be afraid. When it comes to your reins, I was always taught “ice cream cone method” pretend your holding an ice cream. Another thing would be keeping your chin up, as that naturally pushes your shoulders back. One last thing, it will happen sometime but you will fall. The sooner you learn the impact the tougher you become. I wish you the best of luck and enjoy every second!!

@@sophia-no9on I don't think tightening your legs is going to make your horse slow down...but leaning back, squeezing the reins and relaxing will definitely help. Another tip is to keep a strong core and back to stop your body collapsing when your horse suddenly stops, turns, bucks, etc.

Wow this is really great. We are "tourist" horseback riders, meaning only doing a 1-2 hour scenic ride when visiting a new area. We have had no guidance from a single operator. On a recent ride in Leicester, North Carolina, two horses were known to not get along [is what we found out later] because just as we approached the return area my husband's horse ran up and bit my horse, causing her to buck up. I somehow managed to stay on her by some miracle, but my hand was all cut up and injured from the pulling on the reins to hold myself up. My husband's horse took off running away with my husband on top. We were really glad we eventually got back with minimal injuries excluding my bloody and very sore hand. As a novice, what can I do to ensure our safety? Thank you for your amazing video. It's extremely helpful.

One thing I see beginners do is put the stirrup right on the tip of there toes to get there heels down unrealisticly deep Not dissing equitation but I see a lot of people with there story ops this way is this discipline particularly believing the further the heels are down the better it looks but having the stirrup to far up on your toes is hindering you balance just as bad as having them to far down your feet
@HorseClass
@HorseClass 10 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree more! I tell my students that the degree to which the heel is lowered depends a lot on an individual's flexibility. Some people can have a lower heel, while others would be straining to have their heel dropped that much.

I struggle a lot with the command to keep my heels down, because that way, my toes go up like a see-saw and I lose the stirrups all the time. So now I just focus on keeping the weight in the balls of my feet, with a long but relaxed leg. That prevents my heels from lifting up but also gives me much better balance in my seat.

Thank you for this thoughtful video. I am a beginner rider. Having had a couple years of lessons by three different teachers. One thing I have noticed is how they really didn't have a 'curriculum' for what they wanted to teach. Just got you up on a horse and starting yelling about what I wasn't doing correctly. I coached sports for part of my life, and it would never occur to me to not now what basic items I wanted my students to learn. Communicate with them what we would focus on that day and then demonstrate the correct methods and THEN have them try to demonstrate to me what they saw. I do not see any of this in lessons, no communication of what were going to learn, demonstration of it and then hands-on.

Reagan Winget It's just about the same for most of it, except steering & how you hold the reins. Then, you (with 1 hand holding the reins), just lay them over the horse's neck with the rein opposite where you want to go resting the rein on the horse's neck, put a small but of pressure on your inside leg (sort of like creating a "pole" for the horse to bend around), & squeeze gently with the outside calf. I'm certain you can find a video on this that's much better than I can describe here. Try searching "Western Riding".

I've been riding for 11 years, but only now have I stopped taking lessons because it just wasn't good for the horse... not riding itself, but the way they did it was just yanking, kicking, slapping, yelling, hitting (with a huge crop) and whatnot and ALWAYS blaming the horse. I was SO done with it! So now I'm re-learning myself how to ride in a way that is far more respectful to the horse (it's actually Natural Horsemanship, but with a saddle :P). I take care of someone else's horse because she doesn't have time at this point in her life to do it herself. The horse was rather hot-headed, difficult to stop and very stubborn, but now I see that I was being distrustful, scared, harsh and flat-out abusive. Like I have been taught to do! And since I tried different ways, she has never been better. I also never want to ride with a bit again, and now she actually stops when you tell her to XD I still have a long way to go though. I have to reverse 11 years of hard taught lessons, almost engraved in my brain. This video was actually rather helpful to see if I may still be making certain mistakes that the riding school didn't bother to correct me for (they hardly ever corrected humans, only horses) And it did actually help :) I lean forward way too much and while my feet aren't ever deep in the stirrups, they do tend to lean down often. Thank you for making this video!

Heels down! Think long, loose knees and weight in the heels. If you place your stirrups near your toes, the weight should be encouraged to go to the heels anyway. Your heels should be the nearest part of your body to the ground :)

I come across a series of 4 videos from New Zealand that had a great common sense structure to introduce kids to horses and riding that set the kids up for success. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5vJXoWPhbqFo8U It would be good to see more of these types of videos on you tube. I think this lady in the main runs school camps, so many of the children had never touched a horse before. Regardless, it really was a great way to introduce a kid to horses and give them their first ride.

Thank you! This was so helpful for me. I'm new to riding and I've just bought my first horse. One question I do have is how to sit on a forward moving horse? My horse is very sensitive to cues and if I slacken the reigns in a walk he will move to a trot without any leg aids. I'm wondering if there's a particular way I should sit or have my legs to tell him I want to stay in walk? I feel like I shouldn't be pulling his reigns the whole time just to keep him walking, I imagine that would be uncomfortable for him...or maybe I'm completely wrong, I'm quite new to this. Thanks for your help :)

I rode from when I was 4 till I was 8 I got quite good (cantering, showjumping, dressage etc.) but when I moved house I had no stables to go to, which was very annoying and upsetting. 4 years later my best friend who has a horse has invited me to meet her horse and ride it. I'm kinda nervous and worried it won't come back to me like it used to. Does anyone pls have any tips on confidence for getting back in the saddle? Thank you and I appreciate it ✨

Yeah piano hands and leaning on the reins definitely see a lot even in intermediate and advanced riders! Also kicking instead of squeezing to make the horse go and legs sliding back with heels up instead of down and underneath body. I've noticed this seems most influenced by their pelvic position in the saddle, helped by getting them to sit without stirrups first (no perching :P). Hope you get a chance to make more of these :)

You never decrease the amount of weight you have on a horses back regardless of if your standing in the stirrups, leaning backwards or leaning forwards. The horse always carries the same number of pounds-simple law of physics. So the statement about slouching putting a lot more weight on the horses back is incorrect.
@OTTBs4me
@OTTBs4me 10 жыл бұрын
Slouching is never good for the riders posture but leaning back doesn't effect the weight of your body.
@rasheltaylor2217
@rasheltaylor2217 10 жыл бұрын
OldBurgerLover Not with weight, but with how much pressure you're putting on the horse's back. When we have proper posture, we're using more of our own muscles to keep ourselves upright and taking some of the pressure of "weight" through our own bodies. When we're slouching, we sit a lot heavier in the saddle and make it more difficult for the horse to move properly through their backs. Think of it like a child vs a sack of potatoes that weighs the same - which would you rather have hanging off of your back? Th answer is the child. A sack of potatoes would seem heavier to carry than the child, because the child is doing some of the work to keep themselves up.
@OTTBs4me
@OTTBs4me 10 жыл бұрын
***** the definition of weight and pressure are reversible because they mean the exact same thing. Posture changes the distribution of weight on the horses back but it doesn't change the amount of pressure or weight on the horses back. We sit heavier in the saddle when we balance on our ischium's or sit bones instead of our tail bone or pubic bone which is actually the correct position for all discipline's. A sack of potatoes would not effect the horse in any different way than a child because the the same amount of pressure or weight would be supported by the horses spine. Simply contracting your muscles to hold yourself up doesn't decrease the amount of weight the horse has to carry, in fact the more muscle you have the heavier you are for the horse to carry.
@rasheltaylor2217
@rasheltaylor2217 9 жыл бұрын
The main point I was trying to make was simply that being a lighter weight doesn't mean anything if you're not carrying yourself properly. A heavier person can do less damage to a horse's back than a lighter person if they (the heavier person) riding in a proper position, engaging their core, etc. and the lighter person is not. I apologize if it came off wrong.

But it was my first class and i'll try to do better, and 2 is getting the horse to move, i know the horses are really strong and wont be hurt but i just think im hurting it but its getting used to it i guess, I put a straight posture to ride and the top of my foot a bit up than the back, i look up and when I needed to stop I I tight my torso and lean a REAL little back sides and pull the reins a bit to let the horse slow down and then stop, tips or anything i'm doing wrong?

The owner of my barn has teached me a few weeks ago that you have to grip with your heels like keep them flat against the horse's belly when you're riding with shorter stirrups but I mostly ride with longer stirrups and then I use my calves. But gripping with your knee isn't any good because of a few reasons. You block the movements of the horse, your leg could start to glide forward en backwards which could confuse the horse (look at some good jumpers, if their legs would start gliding backwards they could get thrown on the saddle by the landing) and some other more
