Just found this. My little fat Gypsy (and I) are pretty out of shape, so I am going to add two more weeks to this and take it out to six weeks, but I love the whole idea. Can't wait to try it. By the time we get to the longer rides we will be back outside.

Your horse tends to get their "wind" (cardiovascular fitness) faster than their physical strength so it's important to factor in their age as well the older they get, their muscles and tendons will need more time to safely condition without injury. I tend to use a 12 week program for three day eventing. With every year my horse is over 20 I add a week of walk/ trot at the beginning as she talked about. Stretching after rides is really important too just as it is for you as a rider 😊

Great video, definitely going to put it into practice. Would you consider doing a training and fitness video for the freshly backed green horse? Thanks :)

Seems very fast (4weeks) unless your horse already has a great base fitness / has been very fit previously. But did made me think that little and often and then increasing with time is better than few longer sessions a week. Thanks.

Hey! This was really helpful, just wondering what would be a good way to train a horse that hasn't been for a proper ride in 2 years, is quite fat and is attached to another horse which has not been broken in yet?🙂 also when I trot, she will only trot properly on one rein and not the other...

CRKtraining Hey, what kind of schedule would you recommend for my horse? He's almost 19, an Arabian gelding. He's between moderate to moderate fleshy as people tell me. But still not fit and I'd like to get him there. We ride Western and mainly trail ride so that take's jumping, barrels, etc. off the list. Also, I don't canter with him just because I'm a little afraid to on HIM - on lesson horses I'm fine. :D I can only ride like 2-4 times a week. Some days I don't feel like it at all. So what type of plan would you recommend? :D Thanks!

+Kaitlyn Megee Your horse sounds a lot like mine, except mine is fat, I know, so I not only need to get him fit but also lose some weight. (I was thinking those two things go together) He's a 20 yr old gelding. I only do trail rides like you, but unlike you I am a very beginner rider so I don't know how to canter. +CRKtraining I want to know the answer to this question, too! Thanks so much.

Ok, your horse will never be fit if you don’t canter and only ride whenever you feel like it. I know this comment is old but you must know that your horse doesnt get the treatment he deserves. You can’t expect to let him sit in the pasture then on the weekend tack him up and mosy around and even if he isn’t cantering I bet he is sweating white. Especially now that he is over 19 his legs will get stiff and hurt ending up he will most likely have to get injections in his hocks.
