Slowing Down a Fast Horse

Many of us have horses who go too fast when we ride - it may be out of nervousness, excitement, or very commonly lack of balance. Some horses can also get quick out of discomfort - so as with many behavior issues - always rule out physcial problems first.
To correct a horse that goes too fast, the answer is rarely bigger bits or stronger equipment. Instead, we need to be slow the horse down then reward what we wanted - the horse going slower - by releasing pressure, not continuing to "hold" the horse to keep him slow. You may have to work on other components as well, such as your horse's balance and your own position in the saddle to help him maintain the slower pace, but the key is that release when your horse does the right thing by going slower. If your horse is naturally very forward moving, it may take many reminders telling him to slow down, but once he learns that this is what you want, he can respond confidently to your "slow down" cues.
To quote Angelo Telatin during a recent clinic, "Riding is not about pulling, kicking, turning, it is about rewarding good behavior by dropping the tension in your body."

The quickness can also come from how quick you post in the trot. The slower you post, the slower your horse will go.

I find what helps me, counting my breathing relaxes me, if the horse runs off then tiny circles because the horse will just keep going in a circle instead of running away. And you can get relaxed on the circle before having the horse go straight again. But you also may get dizzy lol.

In my class yesterday I was given a horse who had just arrived to the stable two weeks ago. At the rail it was obvious how worried he was about his head and feet, and the second we started on the trail with my class he was the quickest to the front of the group. My classmates (all at mixed skill levels) thought he looked happy, but his ears told me differently. Lucky I found this video again - it makes perfect sense now that he was all nerves during my riding class, and I'm even more determined to try and help him when I ride again next week.

It is so nice to see a trainer, training people and horses and wearing head protection. 3 years ago a friend of mine had an 8 year old daughter who's head was stoved in- while in a pasture. She wasn't riding. She was just talking to her horse and another ran by- kicked its heels up and the damage is permanent. Normal is a completely different reality for that little girl for the rest of her life. So thank you, for being one of the truly few trainers I have seen who wears helmets just like their students. What a great example.

Supermom Flyaway that's because most of equestrian/horse related accidents happen when on the ground, not on the horse. As harsh as it sounds, the kid could've still had serious brain damage, even if they were wearing a helmet.

I have found that keeping your balance and never bracing your legs (which also braces your upper body and pushes you forward) is key to slowing and relaxing your horse. Part of this is making sure your stirrups are not too long as this will make you straighten your leg and thus create the lean forward which gets everything speeded up as well. I agree that leaning back and keeping soft yourself is really key - horses are sooo sensitive to our movements and weight, we are often to blame to speeding things up without even knowing why!

I ride a Saddlebred Arab cross horse named xerox. He is 19 and absolutely SPUNKY so fast and energetic. He is very quick and loves to evade everything. Catching it and collecting your balance, I mean catching every time. Will bring him back to earth, letting them get it they take it as a reward, and will never stop.

I just stumbled across your videos on accident and I really like them! I'm definitely sending all my students to your channel. Thanks for all of your effort and your clear, concise explanations! I just wanted to add one little comment to this topic of horses who continually speed up under saddle--in addition to the reasons you mentioned, often, speeding up can be a form of evasion, especially as we start to challenge the horse for more engagement or collection or extention or beginning lateral work, etc. Horses are built to go fast, so that's not really that hard for them to do compared to some of the other things we ask of them. So, when we apply a leg aid for shoulder in, for example, some horses decide that it's easier to just speed up rather than offer the more challenging move. When they speed up to avoid engagement of the hindquarters, however, it can very quickly morph into a hurried attempt to regain balance since they will inevitably fall on the forehand in this scenario and thus begins the downward (speed) spiral. All in all, great video, awesome advice, keep up the good work, and thank you!

If you notice your horse speeding up, start cantering in circles smaller and smaller. It will get difficult to the horse to canter fast. If you do this, your horse will notice that cantering fast is not the answer. It will basically be 'I asked you to canter, you started galloping, so I will make it harder for you to do it' But dont take it too far. As soon as your horse slows down even if a little, let him canter straight again. If he speeds up too much again, run him in circles until he slows down. Your horse wouldn't want to run in circles and will get it that if he doesn't speed up, you won't run him in circles

Vivien Takacs I’ve had a problem with my perfect horse who started rearing when I introduced a new activity for us, roping every since then she’s been high strung and not herself I haven’t done it in months but she’s been having a problem that when we canter she has to run or when we trot she has to canter, would the circling thing help?

@@vivientakacs5599 I can be really detrimental if not done right, though. Pulling a horse in circles can sometimes just make them more anxious unless you can do it on a relaxed rein. Tight circles drives up their anxiety and tension. I had a young rider who bought a horse much too difficult for her because she got quick and her gut response was always to whip her around in tiny little circles which just drove the horse insane.

another thing that most dont bother trying is getting the horse to use its "thinking" side of its brain instead of its "reactive" side like spooking, or anxious etc.. thinking is having them do things that stimulate their brain instead of the same ole thing like flatwork on rail. doing unique pole patterns or stepping onto small platforms etc. do that for a few minutes then go do some regular workout. be sure to use this as a tool whenever ur horse is using its reactive side of its brain, it really helps!

Your videos have helped me so much with my mare, I have always ridden trained horses and she is the first horse that I started training with natural horsemanship as a foal with all of the ground work of course with the help of trainers. She is green under saddle and so sometimes new challenges come up that I don't know how to handle as I don't have a trainer right now. Learning to slow her down and why she is going fast etc has been invaluable and works! Your slowing the trot video has helped us tremendously in only two riding sessions. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and for making it free on top of it all!! I can ride with confidence when i feel I know what to do to correct her behavior in a fair manner that works for both of us, so helpful!!!

We do not use the term quick for this and it sounds sort of odd, to us. "quick" to us is a term we use to describe a horse that can move low very fast like a cat, for instance in cutting. We call a horse that wants to increase speed "hot". Once I translated the language for our purposes this was a very handy vid. How very astute of you to mention the posture of the rider. You get very high marks from me for stressing the release!

My horse is 3 and won't turn when he is loping/cantering, he will either run right into the fence, stop if I ask for a turn, or run into a wall. I have rode him all over and he has run into something every time. He won't listen if I ask to slow down either. He is absolutely amazing at the walk and jog/trot. I ride him with just a halter and lead and he will do everything asked until I ask for the canter/lope. If he is in the round pen, he will do what is asked, rider or lunging, walk, jog, trot, lope, canter, and gallop, but when I am in the arena, he will make sharp, uncalled for turns to the middle, go to a gallop and act like he is going to slide. He has never had any reining training, just western pleasure, trail, and equitation. He will also lope/canter if someone is lunging him in a big area as long as he doesn't have a rider. He does not have any back or pain issues. Does anyone have any tips?

I ride a 10 yr old mare, Arabian Welsh cross. She is really spunky at the trot and canter. She likes to speed up a lot on the long sides of the arena. My instructor told me to have a rounder looser back. Not like really hunched over but not arched and stiff. Your horse can feel the tension. It was a big difference, a lot more controllable

I find the horse I ride gets hot, particularly in the canter. Im only an amateur but these things work. 1. Be very relaxed. If you tense up the horse will tense up & they'll go faster. Its called escalation. 2. In any gait I want to be relaxed. For example, if I'm in a slow trot I'll only ask for a faster trot if he's relaxed. There is no point asking for faster motion if he's not relaxed at the existing tempo. 3. When he's rushing in the trot I try and get him more collected with a little more tension in the outside rein & using my core. As soon as he stops rushing I release the rein & core resistance. 4. When he's a bit hot he wants to jump from the trot to the canter. I find if I have him collected in the trot with good contact on the outside rein (i have the rein quite short) he can't. Initially he tries hard but then he relaxes when he realises he can't jump into the canter. I want him to accept the contact with the bit & relax. 5. I know its very basic I find its very useful to go back to a walk and do a lot of walk stop transitions. Sometimes I tap him on the shoulder & say listen. Once he is listening then Ill go back into other gaits. With the horse I ride he knows perfectly well what to do but he just stops listening. The walk stop transitions coupled with a tap on the shoulder with the whip gives him the message 'he's not in control & he needs to turn on his brain and listen'. Essentially riding in any gait should be extremely relaxing. If its not get lessons or think of solutions. Im only an amateur but these are things that work for me. Last time I rode him I practised all these things & he was so much calmer. I rode for 50 minutes & it was peaceful

I agree with this video to a certain extent. Except for the opening rein and tipping nose into the fence. Knew someone who was taught to do that, her horse was also a jumper.. She used the technique you’re describing and her horse tried jumping the fence, she fell off, horse landed on top of her and she died instantly. Not saying this happens all the time, because it was kind of a freak incident, but just be aware that things like this do happen. It’s best to not use the fence for training (or balance) issues.

Mollie Reeves Not at all. Cantering is such a lovely rocking rhythmic lull. Similar to the rhythm of a heartbeat. I am positive we are partial to liking such rhythms because when we are exposed to them it triggers us on a subconscious level of our experience in the womb, where we felt probably the most content, safe, and relaxed ever possible to feel in life. The one constant thing we could feel and hear the most was our mother's heartbeat nonstop. So hearing any kind of repetition of that makes us all warm inside. I guess I am just stating the obvious. I know riding a cantering horse makes me feel the best but even hearing galloping horses or certain types of music, even the sound of certain car engines that have that similar rhythm, has a pleasant relaxing calming effect on me. I didn't realize until now that I felt so philosophical about this. It's almost making me feel self conscious. but it's just a KZbin comment so whatev.

This was really helpful...do you have a video on getting the horse more supple, with a lower head, and our Tennessee walker is always stretching and pulling on the bit...any ideas why and what to do to help it?

I love these videos but the only thing I struggle with is that when she makes a video on how to slow down a fast horse she uses a horse that is just a little faster then regular horses but the horses I ride litterally run through the arena as soon as you go to the trot, same thing with slow horses, I dont ride a horse that is a little lazy but one that really almost doesnt move forward. So it would be nice to have an extreme horse in a video once in a while

Beau van Rhee I don't know about your situation, but I instantly thought the rider isn't the same either. Callie is very relaxed in her body as she rides. That is the problem for myself when riding horses I know has a lot of go in them- I tend to get tense in my body, and that is usually a big part of the problem if the go gets too much. After giving my ex racehorse plenty of time with me relaxing as well as I could in the saddle while working on these bends to slow when he rushed too badly, finally he learned to work through his own speed issues.

A horse I ride goes fast because at her past home she was abused and taught to just run and run and run, my stables are trying to retrain her, she is really good at jumps, but she takes off a lot, once she’s trained properly, she’ll be beautiful, but any advice to slow her down while they’re retraining her

And what do you do if you have a horse that doesn't want to go unless you have the magic wand in your hand? What's weird is that you don't have to use it, you just need to have it. As far as I can see, mostly school houses do this and I think it might get annoying for new riders. The phone's auto correction might have messed up this comment, sorry.

Hi this is very helpful but my problem is that I can't ride fast with a saddle I still have a tendency of bouncing up when the horse is galloping,so will you assist with that...I mostly use English saddles.Thanks.

I recommend you not to use stirrups and start feeling the horse's movement. I had a problem with this too, after I rode stirrupless a few times, I learned to stay put. It's because the stirrups help you put your weight on something so you will bounce more in the saddle

how do you slow down your horse if they get excited?
@treelore5100
@treelore5100 6 жыл бұрын
the best way is to circle the horse. Not tight but give it something to focus on. Put out some cones, do some ground poles. The more a horse has to think the less excited it can be.

kyra Nortje it is easier to let you're horse know and train her not to het excited. It is also easier if you het off before you get to the area she starts to het excited in. Say for instance, if you head to the coral. She will get excited. Get off before you het to the coral and if she gets excited... Put your arm out in front of her chest and put your weight on it. Tell her no and it is easier if you get the reins and wiggle it and say back back, out of my space. Sorry if I keep on saying her, I am kinda used to having a girl horse.

Could you do a video on how to ride a horse with to much go in general? One of the horses I ride has so much go sometimes even when I'm leading. I might start to do compation on her and I'm a little scared if her because she has so much go. Could you do a video on how to calm and slow them down? Please!
