Not so much organic as it is just smooth flavorful drumming for days as well being a beast with precision in his playing techniques..i been playing drums for 33yrs since 8yrs old myself and im not shabby myself but his fliud as water flowing on his drum roll techniques is my fav part of his playing style.

Love the intro. He puts some kind of "swing" into hardcore-drumming (jazzers might laugh about this, but who cares). Anyway, simply great! supertight, powerful and unique.

dashwig, You are right on the money on this one. Mackie has always been one of my favorite hardcore drummers. G-man (Gary Sullivan) drummed with the Cro-Mags as well. They both had a similar "spirit" if you will.... They both had that indescribable "swing" which you refer to. Gary used to drum with PARLIAMENT, for crying out loud!!!!! Mackie (to me) sounds like an awesome punk, hardcore drummer with jazz and (dare I say) "funky" roots? He DEFINITELY has that "swing"!!! Check out G-MAN! His shit is ULTRA TIGHT!!!! Also, T.M. Stevens (bass), he is an incredible bass player!

I did read an interview with Harley Flanagan in which he states that the intro for We Gotta Know was influenced by listening to jazz fusion at the time. If you also dig into the history of the Bad Brains, before discovering punk they were heavily into Return to Forever and other fusion.

Glenn Szymanski I went to the high school of music and art with Mackie. He was always a poker face kind of guy at the lunchroom table. We both lived a few blocks from each other on the upper west side and wrote graffiti on nyc subway trains so everything centered around that back then, he was known as Mackie Hyper. But unlike me who was an art major, he may have been a music major-I never asked but either way he may have had classical training

I can only echo the comments I have read. Mackie is certainly one of the most underrated drummers in the punk / hardcore genre of music. From seeing him play live when working with the Cro-Mags in the early part of the '80's to seeing him perform with the Bad Brains (one of my favorite bands), his natural talent, "percussive flow" and musicianship is second to none. Mackie is DEFINITELY the Real Deal in my book!!!
