Great video! I walk on Black's beach all the time. I want to learn how to surf fish like you! I'm so impressed how you humanely treated those sting rays. Ha! Thanks for editing out the "trouser trout" :D

Thanks! Yup, been catch and release for almost 3 decades. There's a ton of great info out there on gear and how to fish for your targeted species. Blacks is one of the best places in SD to surf fish. Good luck!

Funny video and active fishing day. Looks like the trouser trout was out fishing for a fisherman. LOL!

Was that a dark spot on top of his head? the spotfin..??
@donniedarko13452 жыл бұрын
The Spotfin Croaker is named because of the black spot on the pectoral fin. The weird markings on this ones head was an anomaly....maybe a pigment defect. I've never seen a spotfin with that black tattoo like marking before.

what is your rig of choice for sand crabs?
@donniedarko13452 жыл бұрын
20lb braid to a barrel weight, to a plastic bead, to a swivel, to a Flurocarbon leader (10lb test, 2-3 feet), to a mosquito hook. Try to find crabs about the size of your thumbnail with roe. My reel is a a smaller 2000 size Penn Battle 3, rod is a light action, 5'6" Uglystick.

Have you ever fished Flat rock on the border of Blacks beach and Torrey pines?

Not a safe spot barefoot, a ray is so lightning fast with that barb. I love surf fishing. All the rays are looking for what you are using. A good day to catch some Rays at the beach😊
@evanwada3 жыл бұрын
how were you fishing the sand crabs? Were you just letting it sit in the surf while reeling up any slack?
@donniedarko13453 жыл бұрын
My Rig for Beans: 3000 size Penn Battle 3 20lb Braided line 1oz Barrel Weight to a bead, swivel to 4' of flurocarbon leader. Small mosquito hook (not sure on size). Google "Carolina Rig" for a better understanding. I cast out and keep the line tight while slowly reeling in. You'll feel a small "tick" when they hit. Set the hook! :)

Which side of the beach you fish on? I went there quite a few times at around the same time of year. There's some good croaker action!
@donniedarko13453 жыл бұрын
I usually hike down from the glider port entrance. Then I walk north a few hundred yards. Blacks has a great fishery, as most to the south is protected. The benefit of fishing Blacks is the deep water trench that allows multiple species to come ashore. You have a greater chance of catching an "unknown" species while fishing here. If you can deal with swinging sirloin (aka as Man Penis) you can score some great fish here.
