I don’t think people actually note as much similarity in design between Croc and Banjo-Kazooie as I do. Take a look at the level textures, the similar look of the low-poly arches, the abundance of stand-out eyes, and the designs (with backpacks) of Croc and Banjo. Honestly, I’m expecting a bird to come out of Croc’s rucksack.

You know, Croc's origins actually go so far back, it's said that the Albert J Crocodillo, the inventor of crocodiles, wrote these words down in his research notes upon looking at his creation: "You shall inspire a new generation of art, my reptilian friend." And after the crocodile ate him, his words were rediscovered by Jez Sen during secondary school centuries later, prompting him to quit school and start the part that led us to Mario 64. Thank you Dr. Crocodillo.

@@illford Admittedly it does sound VERY similar. I actually had to listen to the actual music from both games to make sure Golden Bolt wasn't joking about something else Croc inspired but not really. I never had problems with Croc 1's controls to be honest (it was the very first 3D platformer I ever played admittedly). The need to buy items in Croc 2 was an annoyance admittedly (needing all 100 Crystals from a level to fully heal didn't bother me that much being as the boat race in world 1 and the Flavio the Thermal Fish boss fight in world 2 were both quick and easy to finish while giving 100 Crystals upon completion). My biggest issue with 2 was the fact that you only got one shot at certain rooms where you could acquire Golden Gobbos, requiring the whole level to be done over if I lost a life during them.

28:14 Partly correct, but worth noting Rare had a fairly modern style of dual analog FPS control scheme available in Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, both earlier than Alien Resurrection, that let you plug in a second controller and hold one in each hand. A weird and pretty experimental idea, but the end result is essentially very similar to what you'd expect from a modern FPS on controller, all the way back in 1997.

Played a shit ton of Croc and Croc 2 as a kid. Good memories getting lost in those worlds. When you're a kid everything seems so much bigger, but Croc's world just felt so...alive? So organic? The atmosphere was just so engrossing, definitely super impressive for the time.

This was a game from my childhood. my sisterand I loved it. We did not have a nintendo 64 to compare it to other games so for us it was great.

37:38 I thought this opening joke was going to be the highlight of this segment. I was not prepared to laugh throughout the all 10 minutes of it. Comedy Gold 🥇. 😂

I was so confused about the Croc 2 footage, because when I played Croc it back in my day I could've sworn they looked just like the Jellies in the first game, so I looked it up and yeah... The US version is the only one where they look like Lifesavers. All other regions got the regular jelly jumps (in different colors).

Little known fact, Dave Batista not only made the decision to try his hand at Hollywood because of Croc's brave jump to mobile gaming but also gained the inspiration to leave Evolution after see Argonauts go out on their own and creating Croc.

I don't know what shocks me more, that you touched this series or that there's 14 of the damn things. I only knew the first two and a few Gameboy or Mobile games

Croc 1 does support the Dualshock actually despite technically coming out before it. In one of the PlayStation Underground discs Croc is amongst the footage of devs talking about implementing the controller (They can actually be seen play testing with the Dual Analog which is the precursor to the DualShock). It's true the game is 100% tank controls with the dpad. The implementation of the stick is kinda weird though? It's like half 3d movement and half tank, it's hard to describe. Still makes it much easier to play at least. I didn't have the issues with the later levels like you said, but I also used the stick for the entire run instead of just rocking the dpad.

My comment was more aimed at the fact that the game wasn't able to be designed _around_ analog controls from the jump! DualShock factoring into late-stage testing, even six months prior to release let's say, it wouldn't have been able to make a huge impact on the game's core design.

@@TheGoldenBolt That's true although tbh I didn't think the game demanded too much platforming wise (at least when I played it anyway). Croc's movement becoming directional when you jumped definitely helped when lining up jumps even in the later stages. I do think it's still mostly unremarkable though. Definitely a product of its time although I do adore the presentation/soundtrack.
