I'm just gonna be honest, as an Australian this game and the series make me really really fucking proud. Seeing so many people outside of Australia knowing about and loving a game born and bred here is such a great feeling. Hell, I remember back when I went to Melbourne's ACMI as a kid and saw the stop-motion zoetrope with all the Ty characters, it blew me away, since it was so great seeing something I recognised as a gamer in reality - and I'm sure some international fans would have been the same way back then.

The fact that Ty was able to raise not one but TWO successful Kickstarters to rerelease the first two games on modern consoles shows that he could EASILY have an amazing comeback. He needs the KAO the Kangaroo treatment.

It is worth pointing out that Ty3 never released outside of North America so here I was in the UK, a massive fan of Ty 1 and 2 and I still to this day have hardly been able to play 3. I played it a little as a kid when I used my friends pirated copy but I thought the game was like some unfinished prototype or something (I was a kid, I wasn't smart) as it was hard, glitchy and kinda weird. I awaited the eventualy official release but there was nothing. I aodre the orignal two so much, Ty 1 was the first game I decided I wanted that wasn't appart of a known franchise as I just thought the boxart of him with fire boomerangs looked cool. When I head it was coming to Switch I bought it immediatly. I had 100% the first two games on gamecube but I wanted to support them. I have waited for Ty 3 to arrive on Switch because I felt it was a matter of time but I honestly didn't know its history and it sounds like I am not missing much. I will still get it if it arrives to try it for myself but I am not too hard broken if I never play it. But Ty was important for me as a kid in the early 2000's. I had a gamecube and besides my neighbour, everybody else I knew at school has a PS2, playing games like Spyro, Ratchet and Clank, Sly while I has Mario and Zelda. I think I won out to be honest and don't feel envy for them but I could never talk about games with the friends at school until Ty the Tasmanian Tiger and Sonic Heroes came out. I got my friends at the time into Ty and later down the road Pokemon and then the series dropped off in the UK with only two games.

I was telling my husband about this game, because I just realized after watching this the first time that the game shared the nickname his parents gave him.... and not once did it click in ten years. I remember reading about how the game was made in Australia in a gaming magazine. Had to be Nintendo power, though I remember picking up a nother magazine here or there so can't really remember... I actually remember loving the game. The Sonic style of the main character caught my attention, and I loved how the slang didn't feel... stereotypical? My only real exposure to Australia outside of the game had been crocodile dundee, and people quoting it, paroding it....yeah.... Get the same vibes from a kids show called Bluey as I got from this game. Even if my only exposure to the Ty series was the first game, charming is definitely the word I'd use. Had no clue it had so many sequels! There's a whole lot I missed when I entered the workforce in the height of the recession. The fact I know I filled a sketchbook full of characters from the game at the time shows it stuck with me for a while at least. I lost most of my drawing books in moves and this was sadly one, but considering the only other series to get that level of love were Mario, sonic and Zelda..... that really says something, too.

I loved the first game as a kid! My folks were really the driving force behind me getting PS2 games since they mostly got it as the family console for my dad to play Madden, so I assume they walked into a Wal-Mart and just sort of asked an employee what the big seller was for kids at the time. For the most part I missed out on the actually great games on PS2 in favor of the Nickelodeon THQ licenced stuff that I begged them to buy me, but I'm glad that they somehow were able to bring this one to my attention. Was funny seeing the one developer saying that their goal was to make kids learn Australian slang. Used to shout "you ripper" on the playground to headscratches from my classmates. :)

Such wonderful games. To kid me it was like the true crossover of Crash’s Australian inspirations and edge with Spyro’s levels, collectibles and general whimsy. It may have never reached the same peak popularity of other ps2 platformers like Sly Cooper, ratchet and clank or Jak and Daxter but I could never forget about Ty.

TY 4 looks like it was trying to emulate what the revival UbiArt Rayman games did (which are absolute masterpieces), but ended up missing the mark. Ubisoft built an entire new engine for those and even considered making it available for other devs to build games on. It’s a shame they never did because I would love to see a proper 2D TY platformer that pays homage to its game mechanics the same way Rayman Legends did.

Ty 1 will always be my favorite. I have a ton of nostalgia for it, and the writing is just so charming. It's actually become the first game I've speedrun & that's been an amazing journey. I also just prefer the hubs & teleporting to levels in this style of game. Ty 2 on the other hand was a game I didn't know existed until a few years back and I was really pretty disappointed. There were flashes of good writing, but it never had the same charm for me. The worst thing in the entire game though was that truck between missions. The controls are so stiff and slow that I got 0 enjoyment out of it. It just felt like they were trying to connect the world and be like GTA for the sake of it, and that killed it for me. I also disliked the focus on bunyips. I just want to platform as Ty. Ty 3 surprisingly was more fun than 2 for me despite probably having more vehicles and bunyip sections. I could feel it was rushed, & obviously it's all over the place. The combat was meh, but it had cool ideas I suppose. Despite all that, I felt that it tapped a little more into the classic Ty charm, and I just enjoyed it for what it was. I think the biggest factor though was that the crab is infinitely more fun to control than the Ty 2 truck. If I'm forced to drive to each mission, at least it's in a vehicle that I'm able to have some fun in. Obviously it's imperfect, and flipping and losing all speed was annoying, but it also had a higher max speed, and chaining jumps together before inevitably flipping was pretty fun. Still meaning to get around to Ty 4, so can't say much. Overall, the series is very up and down for me, but I love Ty 1 to death, and the speedrunning community is amazing. Anyone who's curious should come check it out :)

Great video but One correction. The Legend of Spyro was published by Sierra. They wouldn't be merged into Activision until their parent company Vivendi acquires Activision in 2008. Now this doesn't change the core of the part of the video where this is brought up, as Krome would still have their hands full with trying to make Ty 3 the same time as a high-profile game that was definitely draining more workmen hours than their own IP, but thought of mention it for before someone "Well actually" and dismisses the whole video because of a minor factual error in a theory.

I did wind up shifting views & came to the same opinion that Ty 2 was the best game in the trilogy, while still enjoying the others just as much! Also, there was apparently a TV show in the works when Ty 2 released. Since it was long believed to be cancelled, I asked Krome themselves about it on Twitter a few years ago, and this is what they said - "We stopped trying to find a distributor for it because there was no interest for it at the time and we moved on to other projects. Nothing to do with EA or Activision, It's just that TV networks were the only options back then." It's sad it didn't come to fruition, but it's an interesting piece of Ty history regardless. So here's hoping a Ty 5 can finally happen someday! Awesome video by the way! :)

Flying Dutchman was one of my first games as well! I remember the construction site being crazy frustrating! Shame about the Ty show, honestly. Didn't Tak and the Power of JuJu get a TV show adaptation around this time as well? Heck, they were throwing around ideas for a Kingdom Hearts TV show too! Almost makes you wonder where video game media would be had more of those actually panned out.

@@qrowing Tak actually got a show shortly after the 3rd game released. As for Kingdom Hearts, it has been reported that a show was happening in 2020. But no other updates as far as I know. I never played Kingdom Hearts, so I don't really keep up with it. Whenever I do hear about it, it's usually from VTNVIVI's channel. :)

I had the first game and adored it as a kid. We ended up getting the second, I think, too. Played less of that one just on account of me probably being more interested in other, much bigger, titles at the time. I honestly had no clue there was a resurgence in interest in the game/series, or that it ended up being a cult classic, so this video was the first I'd heard of that. Sure, I'm four months late, but hey.

When I first heard of the name 'Tasmanian tiger/thylacine', I thought it was some sort of made-up fictional creature. But then I did some research and it turns out that it was an actual animal before it's extinction in the mid 1930s.

Edit: Holy crap, that intro got me so ridiculously hyped. It's such a good feeling to see my favorite series from when I was a kid getting all this love so many years later! My biggest regret with the Ty series, besides Ty 3 as a whole, is how they fumbled the character of Fluffy. Definitely did not deserve the ending she got in Ty 3 and the way she was soft retconned back in later installments.

Not going to lie, Ty was my first real experience learning about Australia and Australian culture. As an American, I’ve been referring to the toilet as the dunny pretty much my whole life now. It introduced me to a whole new way of life, so similar yet so different. I have been studying Australian history for years and to this day, I keep up to date with current events, and I am very close to submitting a job application to a job in Brisbane. With Bluey on the air it occurred to me recently that my daughter very well may have a similar experience.

As a fan of the classic early to middle 2000s style of platformer since that was the era a grew up in, Ty wasn't exactly a quintessential game series for me, but I remember both the original 2 games found, especially really enjoying 2 for how lived in and vast it felt at the time as an open world mission based game set within the confines of what is basically an underrated Saturday morning cartoon. The kind that 'technically' has a plot but only has a handful of actual plot relevant episodes, you know? I loved it and it made me really wish i found some way to get my hands on 3, only to learn years later missing out on 3 was *probably* for the best lol I don't know what the future has in story for the series given only half the games in it I would actually go as far to say are actually good, but if Krome hasn't given up on the little extinct furball, why should I? It's a little hokey to admit the level of dedication they have for their little Australian scrimblo is downright inspiring for anyone in the creative field and I wish them nothing but the best

Something to point out: the rail grinding minigame in Ty2 was originally from a "running away from something" perspective, such as some of the Sonic or Crash stages. We're actually supposed to be seeing the giant beetle behind us, I don't know why Krome didn't fix the camera perspective for the HD version

There was actually a good bit more time that I spent giving a deeper insight into exactly that! I ended up cutting it from the script since in the case of the games industry, the recession Stateside had the huge tail-on effect, and "currency exchange rates" was a way to cover the gist of some of the issue without oversimplifying or spending a few extra minutes going into the weeds for the same effect

As someone who played the original game on his old PS2 as a kid back around the time it came out (and got the remaster of it on Steam six years ago), I thank you for doing your part in exposing this series to more people. I never really _beat_ the game my first go-around, though-- just found cheats online, got to the later parts of the game early, and didn't have a fair playthrough until I got the remaster. It was certainly a good way of exposing me to Australian culture, however. As for the other games, I just never got around to picking them up the first time around, but I intend to do so with their remasters at some point, even more so after this video reminded me that I still have to. I realize you didn't have the most glowing appreciation for TY 3, but I'll get it anyway, if only to further support Krome's future efforts. They still seem to believe this ol' thylacine has life in him yet, and with their Kickstarter successes and the ongoing platformer resurgence, I kinda can't blame 'em. I may not be a fan of this series the way I am with Sonic or Ratchet & Clank, but it still had a hand in my formative years, and I did wind up playing some of Krome's other projects (their Legend of Spyro games and Blade Kitten, namely), so I'm certainly rooting for their future success.

I bought a used copy of Ty 2 from a small mom-and-pop-esque game store near me as a child and instead the game inside was Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Was my first GTA but I was, like, eleven at the oldest so had that info come to light at the time I am sure the gamestore would have gotten in a bit of trouble. My mother thankfully thought it was funny at the time. Watching this I do not think I ever actually played Ty 2.
