To make this crochet baby cap or baby bonnet hat I used about 30g of DK weight yarn ( James C Brett baby DK) with a 3.5mm hook. You can also crochet this bonnet smaller or bigger by simply changing your hook size and yarn weight. See below. Just remember these sizes are not exact since not all babies are the same size and since tension can vary from one person to another.
To make smaller or bigger:
NB use 2mm hook with #3, DK or 8ply yarn
0-3M use 2.5mm hook with #3, DK or 8ply yarn
3-6M use 3mm hook with #3, DK or 8ply yarn
6-9M use 3.5mm hook with #3, DK or 8ply yarn
9-12M use 4mm hook with #3, DK or 8ply yarn
12-24M use 4.5mm hook with #3, DK or 8ply yarn
*** If prompted to change hook size just go up or down 1/2 hook size from which ever hook size you started with above or used last.

I'm wondering if anyone else had this problem. I know you said not to worry about it being 85 chains because the pattern would pull it in. Well I chained 85, used a 3.5mm hook with Bernat softee baby yarn which is a #3 and after several rows the hat was large enough for my head. I think I crochet fairly loosely but didn't think that loose. Should I do a shorter chain or should I use a smaller hook?
