I am a teacher who crochets; when I taught elementary school, and now middle school, many of the my male and female students wanted to learn as they saw me making things. I had to encourage my boys just as much as my girls, but I especially wanted the boys to know that it was perfectly okay for them to pursue these types of crafts, and that there are several men (who were not gay) who are very good at it, like Rosey Grier (Football Hall of Famer), Todd Paschall (Crochet By Numbers), Jonah Larson (crochet child prodigy) and many others whom they can draw inspiration from. I think its important, especially during a pandemic, to explore your artistic nature, and to find out what your gifts and talents are, and pursue them; crafting should not be gender-based, and I'm so glad you gave voice to this topic; THANK YOU for sharing!!

I have worked in the Education field for several years and am studying to be a teacher. There are teachers out there using crochet to teach math!! Doilies can be used to study geometry. In therapy they use crochet and knitting to help ground some of our soldiers with PTSD. Some educators use crochet to help keep the younger children focused. Art is a disappearing form of communication. Those of us who can create are few and far between, so anyone who wants to learn should not only be taught but encouraged to think outside the box!!! Keep up the positive attitude and encourage all of us to continue to create and make items that will be loved by those who need them!!

It's good for the soul. 😊 And just my opinion I think that mom should let her son crochet. It will teach him a good hobby and it will keep him from spending time just playing video games or getting Into trouble. In my book, that's no different than a woman being a woodworker. My Dad built houses, so I have saw dust in my blood and I'm a woodworker. I enjoy seeing a man work with fiber. I love it. It's wonderful that you crochet, and gender, etc. has (or should have) nothing to do with it! Just enjoy what you love and be happy. My hubby is a Marine Corp. Veteran and decades ago during a lengthy hospitalization, he learned to crochet, knit and macrame. When we'd first met, he asked me "not to laugh", and then told me he crochets. I thought it was absolutely terrific and was excited to see what he'd made! (Especially from "tough" guy!) He hasn't crocheted since that time; but very creative in other ways, and chimes in a lot on my projects, offering suggestions and ideas. He'll go yarn/craft shopping with me sometimes and is definitely my yarn enabler! Many times when we're at the VA waiting for appts., other Vets will ask about what I'm making. Some have expressed interest in learning, hoping it will help them with PTSD. I've often thought about teaching there for that very reason, and who knows, maybe one day, I just might! 💚🌼💚

I think a Mother should foster and encourage any type of creativity their child is interested in, especially if it includes spending time with a grandparent. I've been crocheting since my early 20s and used to think people would make fun of me (calling me a granny or whatever) so I only did it privately. Now that I'm older, I could give two *bleeps* what anyone thinks, and I'll crochet anywhere. Since I've been open about it, people have commissioned me to make things for them...for $$$. I think it's great that you crochet! I wish more men would. Your a great fiber artist, and so happy the channel is growing! Keep up the good work. 😎

I've heard of a study by someone at Princeton University about how knitting has very calming and therapeutic effects on people. They hooked people up to machines while they knitted to see what it did to their brainwaves. Have you heard about this study? When I heard someone talking about this with knitting, I realized that this is true also when I crochet. It needs to be a project where I knit or crochet an easy but interesting stitch, and don't have to stop and start a lot. A blanket such as you're working on today is just the thing that works for me. It only takes a few stitches to feel that blissful effect. I am so grateful that my grandma taught me! I wish more people knew about these benefits from handcrafting! Life is super stressful these days, and so much trauma going around. We need all the help we can get! Maybe something like this Princeton study would convince people that hand crafting hobbies are a good thing.

The blanket looks beautiful, and you handled the question perfectly. I think it might help if the mom knew some great historical crochet facts. For example, in the mid 1800's crocheting helped save many lives in Ireland. The whole country was going thru a potato famine, and to help provide for their families, farmers took to crocheting and selling their crafts to the rich. The whole family would take part in crocheting, including the husbands and the children. Hope this helps.

Yes, good point. And in large fishing communities, men made fishing nets to provide for their families, which were finger knotted very similar to macrame, that has generated a lot of interest in crafting and needle works too. Also in cold climates to stay alive you had to learn to clothe yourself, textiles were made from wool and hide by men and women.

Encouraging and supporting curiosity is the BEST gift a parent can give a child! My ex-husband knew how to crochet and taught me to make granny squares. On the other hand, all power tools at our house belonged to me. He enjoyed cooking and I enjoyed working in the yard. I raised 2 boys who both took ballet when they were young. One transitioned into martial arts and fencing. The other, in his early 20s, would like to resume ballet. OUR INTERESTS DO NOT DEFINE OUR SEXUALITY! I have never been called "normal", thank goodness! Why would I want to do or not do something because of someone else's expectations? I would miss so many wonderful experiences if I wasn't willing to try. Cooking was often considered "women's" work. However, I think the young boy's friends would be jealous of any boy or girl who could cook their favorite food for themselves. They might also be jealous of a friend who could customize his own cool hat!

I think fiber arts are for anyone who wants to learn them. I taught my daughter and my son both how to sew and knit. I feel like they are important life skills. My son doesn't knit anymore, but still sews enough to repair his clothes, and isn't bothered by what other people think at all. My son pursued his interest in fiber arts while playing nine years of football, becoming a master certified mechanic and having a girlfriend. I feel like people spend too much time trying to label everything... people are all just people and we should do what makes us happy 😊 Also your blanket is super cute!

I would like to share the fact that scientists have found that crochet and knitting are really good for mental health. They are using it especially with soldiers to help when the come back from war. It helps with PTSD. Many of us have experienced the calming effect. Blessings

Just found your video today! I'm so glad I did. What a wonderful skill you have. I am planing to teach my teen boy how to crochet. He just recently asked me to show him how. We will have many bonding hours doing this creative craft together. You and your wife are a beautiful couple; I enjoyed seeing your pictures. Smiles from Claudia in Venetia PA.

Three things for grandma, mom, and the young man: 1) There is a picture from a ward at a World War 1 or 2 hospital of soldiers knitting while recovering from their injuries. I cannot remember the original source of the image, but I have seen it online or in videos several times. 2) The Bakery Bears - KZbin podcast, husband and wife knitters, husband was a drummer/percussionist and teacher. 3) Cherry Pie Cottage - KZbin podcast, husband and wife knitters, husband is a veteran.

Crochet is for everyone. I hope the mother will see that. I don't think the kid is embarrassed, I think the mother is afraid of what people will think. I hope his interest will continue. I came to you by accident today. I will be back. I just started a hat, will try this stitch. I look forward to watching your other videos.

You did a great job explaining. If you enjoy a craft, any craft, you should be able to do it without getting flack from anyone. That’s all I’m going to say because I could go on indefinitely. Love the blanket!! Love the stitch. What is it called? You and Nikki are so fantastic. I’m so glad I found your channel. 💕💕

Not sure on the name of the stitch. I just remember seeing grandma do it. Grandma said she didn’t remember the name either and she’s impressed that I remember how to do it still LOL!

I’m going to try this stitch. Sorry for bugging you about it. How many multiples for the starting chain and do you start with a single stitch foundation? I’m very impressed with the beauty of the stitch and it’s so simple. One of those projects I can do while watching your channel. 😄

I really loved hearing an educated Man's explanation to the comment left. I really am sad that anyone would step in the way of a learning ability for any child. This craft like any other activity or sport and I say sport because some see this as such and there is no right or wrong sport for children to play well there shouldn't be. I would suggest for this family and any other family with this issue maybe check out the young man known as Jonah's Hands and maybe that will help a lil should help a lot. I know several men who crochet and knit and with their wives and some without. I also know guys who crochet & knit with their guy friends that they taught the craft to. I would also like to throw in this could turn into anyone's career as well just like sports has. I would also like to say I haven't known of yarn to turn anyone gay regardless of male or female lol. I just wanted to let that be known that if someone does the craft and is gay that has nothing to do with the craft. Please know I will be praying for this situation and all involved. On a better topic thanks for sharing pics of you & your lovely wife she is stunningly gorgeous & yall make a beautiful couple. I also love the stitch you used on the blanket your making but I have a question on the next row after the sc, ch2, sc are you working into the ch2 or what because your increasing in each stitch so I wasn't sure where you would work into in order to not increase in each stitch? I think you should write a pattern and then do a tutorial and that would be better so then everyone would know it is what yours. Thanks for sharing. Last but definitely the best the puppy oh my goodness I'm crazy over dogs, puppies, kittens lol your furbaby is gorgeous.. May God Bless You & Yours

I would encourage the mother to read up on the history of crochet. In the 1800's the Irish MEN crocheted to bring their country out of famine. And it goes on and on. There's nothing "gay" about crochet. 😎

Hi Roo! I think that women needs to be educated like you said...besides like I said before it was the men who did the knitting crocheting in days of old...the Men and what difference does it matter...this world is crazy enough small minded people should have their facts together...it simply doesn’t matter especially in these times...I personally love your channel I don’t care about your gender, race, education, faith none of it. I like you for you period. Thanks to you for being real!

My nephew crocheted as a kid. I don’t know who taught him. He hid his yarn and hooks in the back of his closet. He didn’t tell many people. I’m guessing somebody made fun of him. Only some of us knew and we were sworn to secrecy. He got excited when I came over and would show me his creations. He was really good. He is now in his 30s and still crochets. His grown daughter makes fun of him and calls him gay when he crochets. He is a big buff manly man and HE DOESN’T CARE now. And I think his friends poke fun at him sometimes. Again. He doesn’t care now. I love seeing Miss Rue!!! She made me smile. I had to put my Quincy to sleep 3/30. He was a cocker spaniel Bichon poodle mix with tan and shades of gray. I’ve never seen any other dog come close to his coloring. He was 10. He got very sick very fast. They said it was the preventive meds (Bravecto and TriHeart+ combined with the heavy metals in the vaccines) that gave him Cushings disease. He went undiagnosed for a few years because our old vet didn’t run the one test that would have revealed high cortisol. Banfield isn’t the best place to take your dog. The vets are usually right out of vet school. We lucked out in the end with an experienced vet who listened to me about his symptoms and ran that test. I didn’t know he was at the end of his life. He hid his pain. He had one very bad night on 3/29-3/30 and when we took him to the vet in the morning they said his cortisol level was so high, that even after diluting the sample 4 times it was still too high to register on the machine. His quality of life was sooo bad that morning that it was time to say goodbye. He was my service dog when I had PTSD after a car accident. He lost his hearing about 2 years ago. But he was still a very active dog. He did start to slow up around October and didn’t like walking as much. He was the best dog I ever had. By far. He was a rescue. Best decision I ever made. It was a love at first sight relationship. And it was online. Lol. I saw his pic and said “He’s the one”. We drove 2.5 hours to get him. It’s very hard without him here. He was a Velcro dog and my life revolved around him. One day I will rescue another curly haired pupperoo. We will be using a holistic vet, continuing with the supplements we gave our last dog, doing titer tests, detoxing after any mandatory injections, and using non-toxic flea/tick and heartworm preventive, and he won’t be eating any processed dog food. It’s gonna be raw. And my next dog will live looooooong past 10 years. Lesson learned.

My husband can crochet very beautiful Afghans. He’s working on camouflage seat covers for his truck. He pick up my craft as part of therapy after an accident with a saw . That’s as much as I want to say. He’s a big burly biker I dare anyone to tease him. All kidding aside Crochet is therapeutic if I were the mother of this young man I would welcome him to the craft. Better than out the making mischief. 😃 Stay safe friends

I know I'm late to the party on this, but I want to reiterate that there is nothing wrong with being gay or straight. There is nothing wrong with crocheting regardless of gender. Any form of crafting is good for young people, adults and seniors! Thank you for setting a positive example for male humans who may want to crochet or knit but may be hesitant due to old, useless stereotypes. xoxo

As a grandparent I understand where she is coming from saying the mom has the final say. However, if I couldn't get mom to come around, I would absolutely let my grandson know that if he is still interested at 18 I would be over the moon to teach him. But that is just what I would do. 🤷♀️

I feel that crocheting is therapeutic and everyone should do it-male or female-young and old. I want my son and husband to learn. I think It would help reduce stress and keep them focus. Sad when parents think that certain crafts, toys, chores, or sports are gender specific. New times new views.
