to make the ‘base’ bigger/wider to fit something wider than a phone in, do i just make another row of crochet above round 1 before moving onto the step at 6:08 to crochet into the opposite side?

Nope, its kinda complicated to make the base bigger but I’ll share an example.. so this pattern is a multiple of 4 so your base should always end up with a counting that can be divided by 4. My example is: Chain 17, 1dc in 4th chain from the hook and in each sts across EXCEPT last st = 14dc 6dc in last st = 20dc 1dc in each of the next 14 sts from the opposite side except the last st 14+20= 34 6dc in last st = 40dc so you end up with 40dc and 40 can be divided to 4 so after you made a base that can be divided by 4 you can now proceed to 6:08 :))
