The grape doily was a pattern my mom did in the 50s or 60s. We had tons of them and they were well worn. The grape cluster over the bottle caps were used for hot mats. We had those too. She loved crocheting. Many doilies, pillow case edgings, santas, snow men, christmas trees, pumpkins, black cats, and many, many afghans. Brings back many memories. Thanks for sharing.

I don't have to imagine the time it took to make them. I love making doilies. They take lots of time. Unfortunately most people have no idea the time it takes and the love that goes into one.

I was thinking that, and then I realize people didn't spend time like me on you tube, Facebook, Instagram, googling stuff,. They use up their time in awesome ways. Nobody go get offended I'm talking about me. Lol

That is exactly why anything I make is made as a gift. I've made doilies, prayer shawls, and baby items for family and friends. I also make hats that I donate at my Oncologist's office for anyone who wants one.

Glenda, I'm so glad you rescued these beautiful creations. You are right--a non-crafter has no idea of the time and love spent making these beauties, nor of the value of the supplies. I hope that when I pass on that my children donate all my craft supplies to organizations that will use them to help others, and not just throw them away.

Glenda, what beautiful treasures you found. I was lucky enough to find some beautiful crochet items at a local thrift store one day. I think about all the work, love, and skill that went into each item. My greatest crochet treasures are a collection of crochet doilies and other crochet items I received when my uncle passed away. My aunt and cousin went to clean out his home. Neither one of them wanted the crochet items that were made by my grandmother and aunt so when they asked me if I wanted them I said yes without hesitation. I ended up with over 99 crochet items and 70 linen table cloths and runners that my grandmother and aunt had embroidered. These items are so precious to me. I couldn't wait to place their wonderful works around my home. Some people on home decorating shows say that a doily makes a house look old and shabby. I say they make a house a home and fill it with warmth and love.

My Great Grandmother taught me how to crochet when i was nine. She passed in 1976 and i have table runners, table cloth for the dining room and doilies. I take them out for holidays. My Mother in law passed away in July and she was a crocheted as well. So I inherited a few pieces of hers and all of her supplies. I gave a few to my daughter and my sister in law. I have many things she has made me over the 40 years i have been married to her son. I treasure them always, because i know how long and how hard it is to make these beautiful items. What a loss for the family and what a find for you.

I had a great-aunt who used to make the huge grape cluster doilies back in the 60's, when I was very young. She would have them draped on the backs of huge armchairs & sofas, the smaller ones would be on the arms or side tables. She was always working on something, she was already quite old at the time & her hands looked to have arthritis setting in but that didn't stop her doing what she so loved, her crochet.

This video has inspired me to push myself to create 'A Work of Art', myself. My mother absolutely loved the grape pattern (or anything involving grapes). I agree with you, Glenda, you hit the jackpot! So very sweet of you to make a separate video to honor this special woman's amazing talent. I was thinking it probably took weeks (or even months) to create that GORGEOUS piece. I'd use OxiClean on it, instead of bleach (should still get that smell out) -- just soak it for a day (or however-many times it takes). Bleach might end up eating through the fibers (depending on how old it is & how it was stored). Thanks for sharing.

I love seeing those doilies and potholders. The little dress looks like a small version of the same things my mother-in-law used to make for covers on the liquid dish soap bottles. I have bunches of them. She used to make those bottle dresses and towel toppers as fund raiser items for a group she belonged to. Sadly I wasn’t a crocheter at the time, so I never learned her pattern.

I bought a lot of delays like that at a garage sale if you soak them in OxiClean and use a little spray and wash when you wash them they come out just fine
@laurahall74645 жыл бұрын
That's what I was thinking & you're RIGHT. My Gr'Ma used to do very detailed work like that (even large-sized table covers in tatting) & my Mom wondered what could get the rust (and other) stains out. That's exactly what I did and they looked brand-new. OxiClean is AMAZING as a cleaner for any/everything. I'd be apprehensive to use bleach on older items, as it could end up eating through the material. Not to mention, how close the trim is to that green color. But what a find! I'd frame some of them & hang them on a wall. Works of art ....
@chriscrosscrafter5 жыл бұрын
Yes Oxy clean is a much better idea than bleach, because bleach might damage the vintage yarn. I would use bleach only as the last resort.
@journeyhawk17285 жыл бұрын
I agree with the comments saying to use oxyclean.
@doreenvalencia89405 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, use OxiClean instead of bleach. It may help with the smell, too. Use a dilute solution and be careful around the colored thread. Bleach can damage them and may even cause more yellowing. My Nana and my Mom made many doilies and pot holders. I have some of them. They taught me and I continue to crochet. Thank you, Glenda for sharing ❤️

@creativegrandma Wow that little deer was a wonderful find. I decorate eggs, and am always on the look out for little things like that! You hit the jack pot with finding it. I love when you show things like this and when you do yarn reviews. I have a broken back and can not get out, so I have to send others to get yarn for me. It helps out a lot when I can tell my husband exactly what the name of the yarn is. Since I can not feel the yarn until it is brought home to me, it sure helps to know what ones are soft. He has been known to come home with some of the roughest yarns known to man. Ha ha ha Thank you so much for all you do.

Glenda, all the pieces are just lovely. The little dress is meant to fit over your bottle of liquid dish soap. The stains? I would soak them overnight in woollight and if they don't come out, then I would try a tiny bit of bleach. But beware. The bleach can do damage to the material, especially if it's very old, which it probably is. Thanks for sharing your find. I happened upon something like that years ago, in the 70's. A couple of the pieces were so lovely that I put them in frames & up on the wall.
