I knitted one about 10 yrs ago gave it to a friend and can't find the pattern. Just spent over an hour on u tube and google but no satisfactory patterns. You can do it! Just half-double crochet in the back loop. If half-doubles too hard, just do Double Crochet in back loop only.

You’ll want the keyhole by your neck so it keeps your neck warm, I can’t say a new chain count because I’d have to redo the pattern and I don’t have time for that

I made this for an adult women but I’m sure it would fit a 10 year old or you could go down a hook size but make sure it fits the child if you place around there neck when you get to the key hole part of the pattern

Yes, I would add more rows, so if you add a row on one side then add a row on the other so the slit is in the middle, or you could use thicker yarn.
