Thanks for the tutorial. I discovered you don't have to have 3 extra stitches at the end of Row 1. Just 8 more than what started with. When I got to row 3 my last stitch was a HDC.

I worked ahead and got to this pattern on row 4, but now I’m debating whether to frog it and skip it because I’m not feeling the big visible holes that this pattern creates.

I've had to frog 4 times......grrrrrrrrr....it keeps sloping on one side....can't get my stick counts right I guess

Unfortunately, no, this is not a beginner pattern. The nice thing about yarnspirations is they put at the top of all of their written patterns what the skill level is. If you look on page one the skill level is listed as intermediate. So you definitely would need to have mastered some stitch skills before trying this pattern.
