Basic crochet baby hat/crochet for beginners

This video will explain how to crochet basic hat. Following this crochet baby hat tutorial is very easy. Even crochet beginners can easily make this baby hat. This hat have four different size hat for new born babies, 0 to 3 month babies. 3 to 6 month & 6 to 12 month. Way I create this pattern will start with same number of double crochet & for all four different pattern you have to just change one round. I prefer the way you count the chain 3 at the end of the row rather than at the beginning as I had learned to do. It keeps the seam straight and smooth for a much nicer finish. New born 3 months, 6th rounds same altogether 9 rounds, new born 4 more rounds, 6 th round 11 rounds 12 months after 5 rounds 13 rounds . 3 months, 10 row, border on front post and 11 throw again one front and back post for 2 more rows. Total border is 3 rows and finish it off.

How long should this be from top to bottom because I used the hook you used and d k yarn and my last normal row before the front post back posts only came to just under 3 and a half inches it looked so small I did an extra row, would increasing my hook size help? Or more rows or thicker yarn I crochet quite tight normally need to increase my hook size to get right gauge?
