I first came to the attention of Richard Harris when watching the Field many years ago, i found his performance powerful, frightful, and passionate -- you couldn't take take your eyes off the man. And for this film i say the same, absolute brilliance throughout, i would even go so far as to say that he outshone Alec Guinness. He was not only Irelands greatest ever actor, but one of the greatest, in the top 10, actors of all time. Richard Harris was truly an extraordinary actor, and would wipe the floor with any try hard today, absolutely remarkable talent. Here's to the great Richard Harris.

This is thorough film-making featuring two iconic thespians (Guinness/Harris). Cromwel was both exacting and complicated, and this ambitious film captures all the diorama of that time period. A great view for those interested in the history of history!

God I love these old trailers I wish Britain has some sort of revival of this Historical Drama style, like Tarantino and Rodriguez with Grindhouse, Directors should revive the style of films such as Zulu, Cleopatra and Spartacus, full of dashing heroes played by brilliant actors and EPIC hand gesters, and 5 minute trailers with a voice over telling us what happens.

You can't learn history from watching a movie. Drama requires glossing over important elements and fictionalising. If you are studying then I hope for your sake you do not take your own advice.

first of all i read books before watching this movie,and my point was that some people learn better with action rather than text, so i was just making a point that this movie is resourceful!

Sarah Kitty I agree. So go and watch a factual documentary. Gaining an accurate version of an historic event from a movie is like trying to tell the time from a clock with one hand missing.

From the producers that gave you the films: Hitler, Stalin, Mao comes another legendary biopic of a great man. Jesus Christ, talk about being out of touch. Nothing speaks more heroic than partaking in genocide.

Wasn't Cromwell an even bigger tyrant than Charles I? It's a bit ironic to try and portray him as a man of the people. Especially when he and his Puritanical ilk created so much misfortune in England, Ireland and later in the Americas. Though then again, this only the trailer. the actual movie could be more balanced in its depiction of Cromwell.

No, definitely not. Charles ruled England without a parliament for eleven years (1629-40), whereas Cromwell only ruled without one for five years. So on time alone I think it's unfair to say Cromwell was more of a tyrant. With Cromwell being a 'man of the people', what I will argue is this - Cromwell was very popular amongst the army (and therefore essentially 'elected' by them) and whilst we, rightly so, would not consider a military republic a democracy today, back in the 17th century it was probably the closest to democracy, as the army was comprised primarily of commoners (especially considering that officers were chosen for their merit and not nobility - something Cromwell changed himself in the New Model Army). In comparison, Charles had no democratic right to lead the country (as he was a King, duh). This may seem like a weak link, but you have to remember that this was the 17th century, and the notion of an England without a King was radical fantasy - let alone the idea of a fully democratic nation.

Well, the problem was that he was a Puritan, and they went to the americans because they thought England was way to free with its religion and they wanted to persecute other on their religious beliefs.
@jcr4runner

America was formed and prospered in the New England colonies by Puritans precisely because Cromwell left them alone to rule themselves. When the kings came back, the Americans were so used to freedom, that they rebelled when the king tried to reassert taxation without representation. So in a strong way, Cromwell was one of the founding fathers of America.
