I just did that comment. If you use var.s you´ll get the exactly same result as using SPSS. I tried with var.p and I got differences.

It is variance not standard deviation , if you google the formula of variance you would see that we are computing variance with usage of squares therefore you can get a higher number than the numbers in your sample

With Likert scales it is up to you, as long as the scoring is consistent across the questions. Usually people start with 1 or 0 depending on which looks cleaner to you, with 1 being the most common starting place. You can either use 1 as strongly agree, 2 agree, 3 disagree, and 4 strongly disagree. Or do it the opposite way with 1 as strongly disagree and so on. Again, the key is consistency across questions. Make sure in your paper that you specify how the scoring is taking place, so that others can follow your data. Hope this helps!

My Cronbach's Alpha is around 0.79 Is it valid? This is for my thesis, so I hope it will work.
