I agree that it is very confusing due to their names. However, primordials often are often considered the physical embodiment of something rather than just a God who has power over it. Chronos is time itself, time exists because he does. Cronus is a God who's dominion is related to time and therefore falls under that umbrella. Same goes for all other primordials and what they embody. That is why they are thought so powerful. I love your videos and the way you tell each story.

To help distinguish between the two, it might help to remember that the Greeks had separate spellings and pronunciations for each name. Chronus is Χρόνος ("Khronos", which began with an aspirated K that by Hellenistic Greek became a voiceless velar fricative like the ch in Scottish "loch") while Cronus is Κρόνος ("Kronos")

Yes. Exact transliterations (Kronos, Khronos), conventional transliterations (Kronos, Chronos), and latinizations (Cronus, Chronus) I think the conventional transliterations would make it easier to remember as Kronos and Chronos start with different letters, although I personally use latinizations

I've had thoughts about these instances of "primordial force vs titan/ god" presence conflicts. My interpretation is that certain primordial forces allowed themselves to be reborn as more tangible gods in order to maintain a foothold in the cosmic hierarchy of deities. That way the existence of Eros, the primordial force, and Eros, the child of Aphrodite, could make some sort of sense despite the narrative conflict. The same concept could be superimposed onto the Chronos/ Cronus conflict.
@jacobw4612
@jacobw4612 4 жыл бұрын
1) If u use Chronos, then u use Kronos. You cannot use a transliteration and then suddenly use a latinization. CONSISTENCY. 2) The existence of Eros as the child of Aphrodite was sort of made as Aphrodite merged with Venus. The Romans saw her as a motherly figure and that's why Eros became the child of Aphrodite. But they are the same, with different birth stories. Chronos and Kronos are different 3) Chronos is a little something I call orphism
@sonofcronos7831
@sonofcronos7831 Жыл бұрын
Nah, this dont make sense at all. The first Eros and second Eros are clearly two distinguished beings. The first is the primordial of creation, the second is just a baby that follows his mother orders. The first Cronus is time itself, the second one is chained in Tartarus. So there is no reason for a primordial to acept a lower form. They are two different beings, just accept it.

Same with Poseidon and Pontus, one controls the seas and one is the seas. Same with Aphrodite and Eros, one controls love and one is love. My personal headcanon for Eros is that he was originally the Primordial that got turned into a baby (Cupid) by the various gods and was raised by Aphrodite as his "mother" so that the Olympians could control him.

The Eros of the Theogony is not the same Eros as Aphrodite son. The hesiod Eros is similar to Phanes, the primordial god of life. The baby Eros however is a son of Aphrodite or Aphrodite and Ares, and just obeys his mother, and is not nearly as powerful as the primordial Eros/Phanes.

@@gunjfur8633 Oceanus is the titan god of the River Ocean. The greeks believed the earth to be flat and encircled by a large river of fresh waters, there lived Oceanus and his wife Tethys and also the Oceanids. Clouds, rivers and fresh air breezes all come out from the Ocean River. Constellations rise from these waters from the underworld during the night. Beyond it, we have the land of dreams, and than the land of dead and darkness. Pontus is just the primordial sea of salty waters.

Wikipedia actually brought up something: “During antiquity, Cronus was occasionally interpreted as Chronos, the personification of time. The Roman philosopher Cicero (1st century BCE) elaborated on this by saying that the Greek name Cronus is synonymous to chronos (time) since he maintains the course and cycles of seasons and the periods of time, whereas the Latin name Saturn denotes that he is saturated with years since he was devouring his sons, which implies that time devours the ages and gorges.” So by technicality, Cronus has some power over time. Maybe not as much as Chronos, but still has dominion over it. Kind of like how Ouranos is the sky and Zeus has dominion over the sky. It’s complicated, I know, but considering that Greek demigods are related to certain animals and we are walking on Gaia’s body, it’s not that bad.

Cronus was the god of the skies, why people forgets this? Ouranos was sky itself, then Cronus defeats him and becomes the ruler of the sky, and then estabilishes the weather, movements of stars and other heavenly cycles (this is why he is the god of time too). Then Zeus appears, defeats his father and assumes the Sky, the weather, the movement of stars AND the lighting and thunder (these two things Cronus did not have). But Cronus was a sky god, so ir make sense for Zeus to defeat him to rule the sky.

The gods and other divinities in the Greek pantheon are more representations or natural forces and humans emotions. Not angels.

@Thoth Moses Well, if Africa is the cradle of humankind, it's no surprise if the gods are black. However, I didn't know that melanin was a conductor of electricity.

William Julien Nkoghe Olympio Yup. But angel means messenger. In traditions like the Orishas they are emissaries of Olodumare, the Divine cosmic Force. Orishas are also representative of forces of nature and energies that are cultivated within

Hello, we have never talked before. Being a huge fan of mythology and fiction (e.g. Tolkien, Rick Riordan, Terry Pratchett, Lovecraft), I find your channel awesome and interesting. What makes me happy is that you do the research and most of what you say is a true fact (well, as true as mythology can be). However, there are a handful of mistakes; for example you say that Typhon is pure evil incarnate (like Satan/Lucifer and Apep/Apophis) when he is actually Gaia's wrath and her revenge on the Olympians for being huge jerks, basically he's a destructive natural disaster/calamity (also ironically he was a loving faithful husband and father, unlike Zeus). Anywho, obviously I have several ideas and requests for future videos. My 2 most wanted episodes are about the Egyptian god Set/Seth/Sutekh/Setesh (fun fact: he was recently added to ''Smite'') and about the Zoroastrian/Persian god brothers Ahura Mazda and Ahriman. It would make me very happy if you release one of these episodes on my birthday (August 12). Do your best when making these. BTW, it would be interesting if you can one day make a special video about the ''Crossover Cosmology'' trope (several/all mythologies and pantheons coexisting in the same universe/work of fiction), analyzing it and sharing your view of how this could work; and perhaps talk about the franchises that use this concept (''Age of Mythology'', ''Smite'', ''Percy Jackson'', ''Highschool DxD'', Disney's ''Gargoyles'', ''World of Warcraft'', ''Shin Megami Tensei/Persona'', ''Tomb Raider'' and many others). Good luck and best of wishes.

Typhon is not a caring husband. In Dionysiaca, he spoke the things he will do if the assumes power, and one of it is to make Hera is wife just to humiliate Zeus.

Is the version where Chaos was the first primordial deity, Eros was also considered one of the first primordial deity, and thus having influence over Gaea and the creation of all that's beautiful on earth and her LOVE for all her children. The most reasonable version claims that he was a close companion to Aphrodite while she grew up and later on he was perhaps mistaken as her offspring, since he was mostly depicted as a childlike personification. So the story of Eros and Psyche doesn't have to be dismissed at all, with one exception only that Aphrodite was not his mother, but rather a companion for whom he held great admiration.

In the Arab world there is a distinction of time in three parts, namely waqt, saat, and zaman. If you find the time to look that up, I suggest it for another episode of time (I meant episode of "time" or "episode" of time etc)

We often forget the Myths and Legends that we have today are build on stories, beliefs, and myths. When leviathan is mentioned in the Bible itis mentioned as if even a child knows why the being is being mentioned. It would be lile saying "Only is strong enough to wrestle Godzilla to the ground, or why he did it".
